The Garmin Running Dynamics Pod easily clips onto your waistband to measure the running dynamics you need to beat yesterday. It gives you the option to run without a heart rate monitor chest strap and still be able to track metrics that can’t be measured at the wrist.

Review your form View and analyse your cadence, stride length, ground contact time and balance, vertical oscillation and vertical ratio - these biomechanical metrics can help you understand your running form so you can perform better on race day. The pod is easy to use, just pair it with your compatible watch, clip it to the back of your waistband and start your run. It’s so tiny you may forget it’s there!

Key features
  • Computes and sends 6 running dynamics metrics to your compatible device
  • 1+ year battery life
  • Automatically turns itself on and off
  • Tiny and unobtrusive, weighs less than 14 g
  • Compatible devices connect with the Garmin Connect Mobile app to automatically sync your data and connect with others

The Running Dynamics Pod measures torso movement to calculate these 6 running metrics:
Cadence Cadence is the number of steps per minute. It displays the total steps (left and right combined).

Ground contact time balance Ground contact time balance displays the left/right balance of your ground contact time while running. It displays a percentage. For example, 53.2 with an arrow pointing left or right.

Stride length Stride length is the length of your stride from one footfall to the next. It is measured in metres.

Vertical oscillation Vertical oscillation is your bounce while running. It displays the vertical motion of your torso, measured in centimetres for each step.

Vertical ratio Vertical ratio is the ratio of vertical oscillation to stride length. It displays a percentage. A lower number typically indicates better running form.

Ground contact time Ground contact time is the amount of time in each step that you spend on the ground while running. It is measured in milliseconds.

Maybe I'm just getting old but why do people need all this technology for running? Isn't one of the benefits of running that it's simple and requires next to no preparation and equipment? Do you need to know your stride length, heart rate etc? Just go for a run. (edited)

Because a lot of people are training to race or improve.

It's so cheap now cause new Garmin gives the same info from the watch.
Also the HRM pro or the HRM pro+ gives the same metrics and also the HR for a slighter higher price (you can usually find the HRM pro for about £50)

Still might be interesting for people with older Garmin's (edited)

Yeah, I ordered it for my FR245 as the newer hrm's are not compatible with my watch (you can get only HR data and nothing more as far as I know)

So it's just as accurate as the HR strip?

Maybe useful for running with a pushchair, where the watch can't measure cadence properly. I don't want to wear a HRM chest strap.

Though seems it doesn't count for your daily steps totals, bit annoying.

Does this have any value without a watch connected? I.e. just connected to phone?

The run pod gives more metrics / data than just the Garmin watch. I use this with a Fenix 6X Pro; vertical oscillation, cadence, ground contact time, left/right balance, stride length and vertical rato. Be careful though as, I overdid it, you can become a little obsessed with the data 😄
