These are superb as a little 'arcade' machine (Xbox controller + any TV/monitor) with Batocera installed.

    Similar to CoinOps I believe?

Silly question time but would it also run Rocksmith do you know? I've got a really old build.. AMD Phenom II X4 955 with Radeon HD6770 it doesn't really enjoy gaming much these days, just blue screens under load

How well would something like this work as a Plex server?
    steveex's avatar

Makes an excellent low-power Plex server. I have been using something similar for years, with an Amazon Terramaster Direct-Access-storage unit containing the HDDs.
Add a Plex Pass and the iGPU in this will transcode even 4K HDR happily all day long.

Any recommendation for something similar for £120 for running Home Assistant? (edited)

Just look for any HP. Lenovo or Dell SFF pc on Ebay

Aim for 16GB Ram but 8GB is fine but take the one with 16GB if the same price.

Then ignore the HDDs & look for the ones that say SSD. 128GB SSD is fine but go for 480GB plus if you can.

You might have to chuck in another £10 or £20 but aim for the above. Or you might offer on Ebay & they accept it.

These PC are simple. If you want to add more RAM or change the Drives it is normally the case of undoing a screw you can just do with your fingertips & no tools. So when I say aim for, it really doesn't matter about ram & a bigger ssd because those parts are dead cheap right now.

Is there a HDMI on this to connect to a TV. Also, would it be ok for just browsing internet, and watching Netflix etc. Thanks (edited)
    Haydor_Khan's avatar
    Haydor_Khan
Yes it has a HDMI input. Netflix etc, yes, more than powerful enough with a Gen9 i5. Should also be Win11 compatible. (edited)

I'd bite if it was fanless. I previously bought an older OptiPlex Micro and even though the fan noise was minimal, I couldn't get used to it being on 24x7. So I went back to my Pi 4.

    I bought a fanless n5100 box from aliexpress that's intended as a router (has 4 x 2.5gb ethernet ports).

Am I right in thinking you can add a 2.5" hard drive to this, to use with Plex?

do we know if the drive is SATA or m2? Does it even have an m2 slot?
    Willy_Wonka's avatar
    Willy_Wonka
It says in Dells specs the drive include is an M.2

And as stated above you can add a 2.5"

Don't blame me if it is wrong

Is this prone to the same problems - motherboard failures, BIOS bricking and power control issues - as when it was new?

Or have only the healthy ones survived?

Or is it just best to avoid any PC made by Dell on the basis that inside the case, there's a pile of poorly engineered, quality assured and supported rubbish?

Nice system for the money and size, good little six-core that will keep up with modern systems and use little power. I am waiting for the ‘but Apple M1 is much faster and uses less power lol’ brigade…

The irony of calling out Apple “brigade” and then you are the first to mention Apple in a Dell thread. I’ve found it’s usually the anti-Apple brigade that is the most excitable.

Ps. I own this and have been using for 2 years with no issues. Very quiet and low power…used for things like Plex, wfh, browsing, etc. remains on 24/7 too. You can even buy a mount to have it hidden away under your desk…really neat option. Would highly recommend.

I’m sure you can mod it, the processor is a T series and uses very little power.

Thanks OP. I wish there were more deals for models with a full size case. Especially if you use it on the floor, what does a couple of extra inches matter? Small factor designs limit upgrade possibilities

Just bought this from CeX instead @ £145.00:

Seemed like a better bang for buck based on the CPU Benchmark comparison below being very similar to the CPU in this deal's machine

I have the SFF version of this. Although the processor supports pcie 4 the M.2 connector is only pcie 3. Also there's no audio jack on the back but that's an easy work round with a usb sound card.

Be very careful with dell refurbished - I ordered the latitude 3410 deal and it came with deep scratches and definitely not an A Grade if that’s something you care about. I also ordered the precision tower pc and the condition of that was even worse. Customer support is terrible, and only seems to be run by 2 people who got fed up with my moaning and ended up refunding me 10% Just as an fyi, both machines are running fine up to now.

Make sure you pay with a credit card for the extra protection
