From experience of working with hundreds of these models in an enterprise environment, they are great machines, but the Gen5 variants suffer from swelling batteries.

The first tell tail sign is the trackpad will start to lift away from the laptop and within a few months, the entire case will warp.

Out of 400 of these machines, I’ve personally seen over 30 with swollen batteries.

It’s easy enough to replace the batteries, but it’s additional expenditure - something to keep in mind (edited)

In this case, I have a question for you!

Is the memory configured as 1x8 or 2x4?

Planning to upgrade the 8GB to 16GB but each laptop manufacturer configures their laptops differently.. Normally its 1x8 for HP in my experience. Ive worked on a few for family and friends as well as owning some old the older models.

Follow these steps to get it for £143.99:

    • Click on this link (this link is from Health Service Discounts and will activate the code in your session and redirect you to eBay).
    • Go straight to your basket, checkout and apply the code SAVEMORE10
    • If the code is not working , disable any Ad Blockers and try the steps again (Some Ad Blockers may prevent redirects or cause other issues with the link that activates the code).

I bought a mini pc off these guys recently. No issues.

Very good actually. Even the WiFi card came still fully working and with an included antennae that attached just fine.

Quite a delicate item and I have received pcs with broken WiFi aerials a couple of times from other places. Also, that mini pc only has a 6500T i5 and it performs very well as far as my browsing and streaming needs require.

The included W11 installation works fine so far. This laptop has a newer/better processor than my mini pc, so expect decent performance unless your trying to do particularly demanding tasks. And the 8th generation i5 is officially supported by Win 11 I believe

Naysayers scaremonger way to much with cheap refurbished computers. These things are extremely useable devices.

So I wouldnt hesitate to buy this laptop if I had the money and urgent need for one. 13.3 inch sounds good to me. I have an old full size laptop and tbh it's abit of a faff to use something so big and heavy these days. (edited)

This is a lot of laptop for the money. Aluminium chassis, USB-C charging, thunderbolt 3, decent speakers, backlit keyboard, 2 RAM slots. Depending on the config you receive, you might get a fingerprint reader, SIM card reader, maybe even a decent IPS screen though I think the default is fairly poor 220 nits but still 1080p IPS.
Only x2 PCIe lanes attached to the TB3 port so eGPU performance won't be the best but that's a niche case.

Listing also supports offers so possibility of getting cheaper still.

I use a Lenovo T480s (also 8th gen intel) for uni, office, browsing, bit of protein modelling (nothing too heavy) and it's not missed a beat. As long as you're not unrealistic with your expectations, this will be great for many people's needs.

My wife said that a bloke at work has 11 inch and that is enough so 13 should be fine
    Raja007's avatar
She might be used to having 7 inches at home, so 11 inches at work seems big enough to her

13" screen is way too small, I have a Dell like this, it's tiny (edited)
    face-crab's avatar
Depends on your use case. This size can be super useful for sys admins, pen testing, students (small lecture hall tables), frequent travellers (good size for plane tables) etc. Everyone has different needs and not everyone needs a desktop replacement for a laptop.

I assume that this is a hot deal - given how quick it's racked up the thumbs ups. Can someone confirm this pls (I'm no expert)?

Needed a laptop for work since spilt tea over my old one. Thanks op.

For any big corporate the G5 is end of life, and is not supported on Windows 11 so they are being replaced. You have about 16 months till security patching ends for this. I guess that wont bother some people, but to me this is not good value.
    bkpatel's avatar
I've got laptops that have older OS on. Appreciate the security patch problem with companies, but most should be fine until laptop packs in.
If it still won't die put linux mint on. I've got a really old laptop that does amazing things with that

Cold from me. A very average spec which is quite dated and still over priced imho. Couple this with it being one of the post split (business / consumer) HP products where they really started to cut the corners on build quality and I don't see why this is so hot at all.

We had three similar but higher spec models on trial at work and they were awful. All three had fan fails within the first few weeks which I guess you can explain away with a faulty batch. After that we had something like 6 warranty call outs within 12 months, three on one device which in the end was replaced completely. Think these also suffered from the notorious battery swelling issue, we certainly one fail and take the trackpad with it. We stuck with Dell.

Pains me as I'm and ex qualified HP warranty engineer. (edited)

The processor is from summer 2017, so the laptop is probably circa 6 years old.

A matter of preference really. The difference between the 8250u and 8350u is virtually zero so I wouldn't worry about that. Bear in mind the HP has 2 RAM slots, the Dell has just 1 + 1 soldered. The HP has an aluminium chassis vs magnesium alloy of the Dell. Other than that, these are very similar machines and will come down to personal preference. I use the Lenovo T480s which has a magnesium alloy chassis and it's very sturdy but some will prefer aluminium.

Business laptops are great for day-to-day use, I have two of them in the house for the kids - a larger, later version of this one, and a Dell. Both of them have a metal chassis, and built-in webcam covers are reassuring. I've had an equivalent costing non-business laptop break from a similar drop that these business ones have survived.

We're provided with this spec of laptop at work, great price!

Great find - enjoy the swollen battery, the cooling fan with a mind of it's own, and the hinge which snaps if you look at it wrong.

    How much are these new?
    face-crab's avatar
They won't be sold new anymore but the base model started at about £1000 and went up from there back in 2018.

What condition will this be in? Anyone had experience of the company ?

It says used in the eBay description. Also, 8th gen is very old.

I never know what is deemed good and what is deemed bad when it comes to laptops. But picked up a lenovo? One on ebay this week, around £160 in the end, it says its a gaming laptop but I don't expect it would be as good as my sons computer. It's got 16gb ram i5 something or other, it's not got a massive amount of storage but I've got it for doing a bit of ebay shopping, amazon, watching YouTube and listening to music. To my surprise it's got a disk drive! And it looks as if it's got a removable battery which is something that I've not had on a laptop in a while. Window 11 pro but I guess that's the current thing atm?

So I also assume that if I did get issues with the battery at least I can change it?

Had a chromebook, an hp one, bought new, woke up tother day and it didn't have an operating system anymore. Told me to go download summit on a dongle and reinstall it, didn't work. replacement seems a little old in style but also a bit tough looking so not all bad.

Anyone know what sort of things to look out for having bought a laptop like this? Any issues for instance? I'd so appreciate any advice. Sorry to hijack but hoping to learn something.

If you need a basic, compact laptop for a year or two, you should be fine with it.

Having said so I am surprised it is Windows 11, but it appears to be just above minimum specs, so all good.

8GB of RAM is not adequate so best plan an upgrade, small HP ProBooks are hard to open but you should be fine. As this is 5 gens ago it may actually be still easy to do so.

Sorry I cannot be much help, I have been dealing with a gen 6 a lot but not the gen 5.

Overall, for the price and 6 months warranty, it is a great deal.
