When my gold supscription expired I couldn't use the Internet Explorer app on the Xbox 360.

I have noticed today that it is available and not prompting me to upgrade to Gold any more. Handy for checking email, news, weather etc.

Whilst I agree with that, and have no issues paying the live membership for what is was originally designed for, I do object to requiring it for things like IE and LOVEFiLM that don't require any type of service from them. My family want to use LOVEFILM but don't game at all online, so a gold membership for them all makes no sense, but I don't really like handing out my account to the kids and it means I can't use the account elsewhere (e.g. play Batman on PC whilst LOVEFILM is being watched on the xbox.)

I can see this being of some use to some people.
Not really a substitute for browsing on a computer but okay for occasional use.

They are revealing the new Xbox tomorrow, and you can watch the event live on your Xbox using IE so they have more than likely unlocked it for a few days so everyone on Xbox can view it. I'd imagine it will be back to Gold subscribers only soon.

    WOOH! AWESOME DEAL.

Seems a bit rubbish really. Ooh you can use IE on your Xbox without paying £30 a year!

Decent I guess but just seems underwhelming.

Used the browser on my PS3 for years to stream footy matches you can't get over here, so having it on your TV does come in handy. But this should have been free all along on xbox, you shouldn't have to be a gold member either just to stream lovefilm, quite bad really.

Yeah it's ridiculous that they are allowed to force you to pay to use a service that you are already paying to use anyway. Glad BBC told them to take a running jump when they wanted to charge for iPlayer access.

The **** even make you get gold to use skydrive.

Exclusive “family content and discounts” will also be available.....The primary account holder, the head of the family, will provide the billing details and the ability to buy and share out Microsoft Points to other family members, to stop the kids from running wild with the credit card online.

I agree with what you say, and it's not much better (you still have to pay) but have you thought about the family membership?

think it's around £60 for 4 accounts, and you retain control and get these extras (whatever they are).
