Frequently Asked Questions

1. Does Kindle Scribe convert handwriting to text?

Yes. With Kindle Scribe, you can convert your handwritten notebooks and share them as text with your colleagues, family or friends. Choose the notebook you want to convert to text, tap the “Share” button located on the top right corner of the page, and select “Convert to text and email”. After that, you’ll have the option to preview and edit the converted text, and then share with up to 5 contacts. Converted text and edits are not saved to the device.

2. Can I write directly on my eBooks?

You cannot take notes directly on the page of an eBook. However, you can jot down handwritten thoughts onto sticky notes. Using your pen, select the sticky note icon from the tool bar, tap on the page to create your sticky note and start writing. You can also use the keyboard function to add typewritten notes to sticky notes.

3. What types of documents can I import and write in?

You can write directly on PDF documents that are imported through Send to Kindle. Kindle Scribe does not currently support writing directly on the page in PDF documents loaded via USB-C or previously sent to your library before 11/11/2022. You can also create handwritten sticky notes in millions of Kindle books, as well as PDF (with adjustable layout), DOC, DOCX, TXT, RTF, HTM, HTML, PNG, GIF, JPG, JPEG, BMP and EPUB documents imported through Send to Kindle. Learn more about supported file types and what you can do with your documents.

4. What are the features I can use in my PDF and Microsoft Word documents?

For PDFs imported to your Kindle library through Send to Kindle, including the new Send to Kindle from Microsoft Word (using the “like a printed document” option), you can switch between portrait and landscape view mode, crop margins to increase font size, and select text to make structured highlights with your finger or pen, add text notes, or look up dictionary definitions, translations and Wikipedia results.

For Microsoft Word documents sent to your Kindle library through Send to Kindle, including the new Send to Kindle from Microsoft Word (using the “like a Kindle book” option), you can adjust font and layout, and insert handwritten sticky notes into the documents.

To use Send to Kindle from Microsoft Word, a Microsoft 365 subscription is required.

5. Can I see my notebooks in other surfaces?

You can access your notebooks through the Kindle app for iOS and Android. Go to the “More” tab, select “Notebooks” and access your notebooks.

6. How can I download the latest software?

We provide over the air software updates for general device improvements and performance enhancements. These updates automatically download and install on your Kindle Scribe when connected wirelessly. Don't want to wait? Manually download the latest software following the instructions here.

7. What's the difference between the Basic Pen and the Premium Pen?

Kindle Scribe includes either a Basic or Premium Pen. The Premium Pen has a dedicated eraser and a shortcut button, which can be assigned to seamlessly switch between the different pen brushes, and more.

8. How do I know when I should replace the tips in my pen?

If ink strokes appear before you even touch the pen to the screen, or if you see visible damage to the tip, that means it’s time to replace the tip. Kindle Scribe includes 5 replacement tips and a tip replacement tool. Use the tip replacement tool to extract the old tip and insert a new one for optimal writing performance. Additional replacement tips are available for sale for £12.99.

Hmm, give me the 20% trade-in, and i'll bite! Got the Paperlight from the Kids deal, but would return for 20% off this!
    Grimvalo's avatar
You can get the 20% off the scribe with a trade in even though the drop down option doesn't appear on it. How I did it was to go to another kindle, select the trade in device option and go through that process. Afterwards then add the scribe to the basket to get the discount. Ended up paying £218 for the 32GB model (edited)

Such a shame the Scribe is the only Kindle that doesn't seem to qualify for the 20% discount when you trade-in a Kindle.

That said I have been eyeing up the Scribe for a little while so I've ordered one.

It has been £15 more than this only for a short period previously.
The current price before this deal was £319, more than £15 difference...

    This or remarkable 2?
    Sofa_Snake's avatar
I think if you have the money the remarkable. But at this price I'm sorely tempted as with the recent update many of the remarkable features are now here on scribe.

Completely off the topic( and apologies but might help a few)
Since I got my hands on the Galaxy Fold 4, It replaced my
    galaxy tab 8
    kindle paperwhite
Nvidia Shield (using remote controller and xbox ultimate cloud sub)
    Notebooks and pens

And has done it better than any AIO device I have used before. ( I have used many galaxy note devices earlier)
I use a lot less number of devices now, but I use the fold 4 for literally everything.
    Johnmcl7's avatar
I think the Fold is a fantastic little device but it comes nowhere close to replacing an S7 for me, it's way too small for that.

Hmm this or the remarkable? Anyone on here got a remarkable and can rate it?
    welshinzaghi's avatar
Get this. Had one a couple of months, bought on a whim for note taking, now goes everywhere. Being a kindle plus a great note taking device makes it a proper companion. The remarkable is massively overpriced considering the versatility of the scribe. I think it might be the best bit of life tech I’ve ever bought

I will wait till Black Friday. Won't need to be a Prime member to get the same price or lower.

The question for me is, when are the colour Kindles coming out?
  10. craigmacca's avatar
This looks a good price if you were looking to buy one. These are normally £329.99 so £70 off.

The price history shows it's been this price consistently, except for when it was on sale a few months ago . For two weeks it was at £284.99 (edited)

I really don’t need this. But god damn I want it. After the novelty wears off, I likely wont use it, but I really want it. 🤦🏻‍♂️

As a remarkable 2 owner and daily user, I'd say get the premium pen.

If you're a heavy note taker, an e-ink notebook is a game changer

Which e ink tablet or note book will you recommend, thanking you in advance

I have ordered one but not sure whether it will really work for me. The main use-case is I have a LOT of pdfs and epubs to read/annotate and being able to do it in e-ink will give me a break from the screen.

Can anyone advise if there is any easy way to transfer bulk pdfs and epubs to/from the kindle scribe and keep them in sync? (ideally doing a cloud sync, or even cable transfer, rather than the clunky send to kindle)

Edit: amazon.co.uk/sen…dle - it has improved since I last looked. (edited)

I’ve not got a scribe, but check out the app Calibre. I wouldn’t use kindles if not for that app.

I might need sth. like this. How is it compared to Boox or Remarkable? I’m also looking at iPad Mini too.. damn.. (edited)
    Malabus's avatar
The only reason I would get this is for the anti-glare and size.
  16. bungla's avatar
You can get 3 months of kindle unlimited for the same price

I've been using a Galaxy Tab S3 (9.7in 4.3 screen) and currently a Tab S7+ (12in 16:9) for reading Kindle books, the 12in is a bit on the big size but I've been considering a Scribe for the larger size over the other Kindle devices. Most reviews and discussions on the Scribe focus on the usability with the pen but I'm wondering if anyone has one they use for e-books and if it's worth it over a smaller Kindle?
    low_level_devel's avatar
    Author
Most reviews I've seen have mentioned it's quite big and heavy for reading compared to the smaller kindles. If you're used to reading on a 12" screen, then this may be ideal, plus you have the benefit of the pen support.

I'll wait until the colour version comes out next year.
    DealsBeHotPocketHolesAlot's avatar
I feel like I should be caring more about the arrival of a colour one!

I've never owned a kindle or any eReader, so am I right in thinking the big advantage of colour is for those who want to draw/sketch?

For me the whole point of getting a Kindle is so Im not on my phone before bed / laptop screen, and Im like grayscale all the way. (edited)

I was waiting for this deal. From my pre-prime day research consensus seemed to be to go for the premium pen version.

UPDATE: The premium pen is more "pro" than premium, with very few differences between them. Doesnt look like it is worth it. From what I can tell, the shortcut button only supports one shortcut assigned to it at any one time and the eraser at the tip is probably more of a novelty than anything else. The eraser option using the pen nib seems better and just as fast.

Now just need to figure out how many gigs!? UPDATE: Unless you are sharing it / listening to audiobooks / or reading comics, 16GB should be more than enough.

Thought there would be more off, had read something which suggested Amazon's own products get more generous discounts for Prime Day. . . do these discounts ever get better over the 2 days?

As an aside, these never seem to show up on the Amazon warehouse. Maybe there's something different about the warehouse when it comes to Amazon's own products.

For anyone thinking of this or reMarkable 2, the Scribe has seemingly closed the gaps on the note-taking front following some recent updates. The reviews have improved considerably since. (edited)
    Johnmcl7's avatar
This product is available as Amazon renewed so I'd assume that's why it doesn't go to the warehouse?

Isn’t not being able to write notes on the actual book or document in most cases make it a bit pointless? Does send to kindle require word or can you still send it using their stupid email method?
  22. Subs95's avatar
Is the 16gb good enough for mostly note taking?
    ripkord's avatar
Yeah been using it for months for daily note taking at work and have barely used any memory
