Just got a Kobo Clara 2E a few weeks ago. Very simple to use with Calibre, I have had no problems whatsoever. All books have shown up properly with their covers. Very nice reading it with the blue light filter built in, doesn't make your eyes strain like with some devices. Charged battery first day, use it for at least 2-3 hours per day reading, and still has about 50% battery left.
For comparison, with my Dad's paperwhite, I have to convert to AZW format for best experience... doesn't take too long on my mini-pc with it's 16 cores, maybe about 5 mins max for 100 books convert.... I only convert books that he wants on there. The paperwhite (v2 IIRC) is good, don't misunderstand, just I prefer to keep things simple and keep epubs as the main format, as that way I can use them with any device (except kindle). I host a calibre web server, so that my family can just go on there and download whatever books they want, or read in the browser even... and that's how I have been reading them for years until the Clara 2E. I decided to get the clara mainly because of the eye strain while reading at night on my phone... It's massively better now, and I enjoy reading even more than I did before.
The kindles have their place, they are good readers, but the UI IMO is dire... I am always having to help my dad when he gets stuck. Usually because he didn't realise the kindle had switched him into the store rather than the library... and the ads are annoying too, much prefer the book covers view on my Clara 2E. BTW there is very little difference between the Clara 2E and the Libra 2, I just prefer the touchscreen only simplicity of the clara.

I've just purchased one from Argos for £133 using the easy saver card and the £5 off newsletter sign up. I can pick it up from 4pm. (edited)

Kobo can also link to your local public library (overdrive)_ feels quite illicit taking a library book out without leaving the sofa - and it returns itself weeks later.

I use my Kobo for various bits - load other docs on it e.g. take a copy of travel docs (pdf) for holidays, reading work docs on the train.

It is much more open than Kindle - although it feels like their book store is not as good. However many deals on Kindle are now replicated - and you get TCB on purchases from their store - note you get 4.25% on hift vouchers, but 0.85% on ebooks - so buy a voucher to buy your books.

and they do a price match guarantee with a 10% voucher if you buy a book from amazon and they have it more expensive.

crazy prices for 15 year old tech - voted cold.

You're so right. Oled panels were invented 20 years ago so I really enjoyed buying myself an oled TV last weekend for five quid. Because the price of tech always corresponds to how long ago it was invented.

If I didn't have a relatively new (now discontinued) paperwhite SE I'd go for this one

Both (Kobo and Kindle) try to lock you into their ecosystem, and open devices are on the expensive side I feel there is no winning on these e-ink devices.

I thought kobo was open(ish) and you could load your own epub files onto it?

I'm just about to buy one so I'm hoping this is the case as I have lots of epub files on my laptop that I'd like to transfer over.

I have been considering a new e-reader for a few weeks. Have an original Kobo which has no backlight and looking at the a newer one of a Kindle paperwhite. Anyone have any experiences with either? I can only watch so many Youtube videos

Paperwhite is lovely, but it all depends on where you get your books from (kobo, amazon, or somewhere else).
You can convert easily if they're DRM free but otherwise I would stick to one company

I've had a couple of these as I lost one, and for me the perfect e-reader. Used for lit and also academic books, on occasion bought from whatever store has the cheapest price and converted with Calibre if necessary. Nice and simple with non DRMed books off the interweb.

My wife has had one of these for some time now and is most impressed with the quality of the screen. The clarity and decent lighting makes it a pleasure to use. The turn buttons, she uses them a lot, are great, but slightly clicky. Before I sent the Sage back I did note the ones of that model were totally silent.
My wife also has a Clara HD, smaller device.

My 2016 Aura One is still working fine, I have a Clara 2E as well.

Overall great device, the Libra 2 and the battery seems typical of what would be expected.

I've had one of these for a few years and love it - happy to answer any questions if anyone has any.

What do you think of the screen on yours..? My wife's Libra 2 screen and evenness of lighting is superb. I just wondered if that was her model or if they could all be that good.

The screen on the Sage that I bought, got that refunded, was pretty bad by comparison.

Still a good deal, offers more value than paperback books imo

One other thing I realised when I was considering this - Libra 2E should be out in the next couple of months, might be worth holding out for.
    jon_n's avatar
Hi there - what features might be coming with the Libra 2E, do you know? I haven't found any mention of this. I am looking for an eReader and this is currently top of my list, but I could wait for a few months, depending... Thanks
