120w......good enough for a small TV, light or laptop but definitely not a kettle (edited)

Shouldn't be plugging anything over 120w into the lighter socket anyway.

Don't forget the driving law touching anything that can get internet whilst the engine is running.
I got told whilst working on my laptop with the engine running for my invertor that he could fine me (fair play he didn't) but this was on office ground not even the main road.

If it's public then yes, if it's private then no.
The Highway code applies to public Highways and spaces used by the general public nothing else.

At the risk of asking something stupid - could I straighten my hair with this in the car? Standard pair of GHds?

    Probably not.
Anything with a heating element will likely be rated too high.
Check the wattage on the straighteners.
If it's under 120w you may get away with it. (edited)
