If your bad at sharpening knives, or simply can't be bothered, these are not half bad. I brought a set for my ex girlfriend ( ) a long while ago (before the ex bit), due to frustration as I was always taught, and firmly believe, a blunt knife is far more dangerous than a sharp one (and infinitely more frustrating).

Anyway, they are very good for the price, but the constant 'sharpening' is rather aggressive and will wear them quite quick.

The steel is ok, not the best, but not bad at all. The stainless never failed, and they were fine to use generally.

As a value option I recommend them for those that can't or won't sharpen themselves. (Of course if you can, or are willing to learn, you can get a far more pleasing and sharp edge on good steel without removing so much)

If you can / will sharpen and want budget knives with good steel from Amazon that are cheaper. I highly recommend those made by 'rockingham forge'. Save my main chefs knife, bread knife and a couple of smaller ones, i.e. all the ones I use only intermittently, I have those, and the steel takes a wicked edge!!! 😁
(My only critique of the Rockingham forge items is their low weight, but the steel (important bit) is very good for the money in my experience)

The scissors on this series here however are brilliant and I also highly recommend them (they don't sharpen every time, only as required).

    Hope this helps someone (edited)

It depends what you want to achieve. I sharpen a lot of knives and use knives for bushcraft and work so often use diamond hones for quickness, not just my kitchen knives.

However depending how you want to get into it, or how deeply you want to delve I can suggest a few options suitable for a beginner.

The more expensive option I sometimes use is a Lansky kit when I can be bothered to set it up - I can get quite the edge from it and it's easy for a beginner as you can set the angle to your requirements. It's not cheap though, more an investment (though some cheap copies are available):
Lansky Deluxe Knife Sharpening System amzn.eu/d/9YI5BAh

If you want to go more traditional and learn how to do it properly, I have been quite impressed with this Chinese stone set - not quite the quality of my late grandfather's stone but it's pretty good, and it's very nice that it comes with a leather strop (if you want it really sharp, you want a strop - but in a pinch paper can be used for stropping). You can buy angle setters to use on stones but I'd recommend watching YouTube and getting a feel for angle so you can do it more intuitively, it's much more pleasing (I often watch TV if I have any sharpening to do, not that it's that often, I keep one of these sets with my carpentry set for my chisels and such):
KEENBEST Actual Grit Premium Material Sharpening Stone Set 400 1000 3000 8000 Whetstone Japanese Knife Sharpener Stone Wetstones for Sharpening Knives Wet Stone Red amzn.eu/d/h5HtPNO

Finally, the easiest + cheapest option, for my cooking knives, for quick touchup purposes I keep one of these in my kitchen drawer instead of the traditional chefs steel - they last forever and you can use it like a mini steel - the 25 degree preset end works great on the Rockingham forge blades, so giving a lazy option at the same time - I can also sharpen serrated knives like the bread knife with it:
Victorinox Dual Knife Sharpener, Swiss Made, Portable, Black/Red amzn.eu/d/fNoitui

I'd personally say if it's something you'd like to get into or do properly, learn to use a stone, but obviously there are a lot of options available. The victorinox stick is actually brilliant for day to day use. I can use a chefs steel but I've yet to find one that lasts and it takes a fair while to learn to use one too, plus you won't get things as sharp as you can with a stone and a strop (or the victorinox with a bit of practice).

Hope this helps - I bet that I sound like a right nutter now (edited)

I love this comment, which also sends alarm bells, sounds like BS to me

    Yes, it seems to imply:

Out of the box: Very Sharp

After a few years: "If on your journey, you should encounter God, God will be cut"

    Unlikely.
