I can second this. The lack of the thin poles for the windows makes it actually a surprisingly good comprise between the cheapness of a folding roof tent and the ease of a pop up, clam-shell style roof tents.

Aren't roof racks limited in weight to 75kgs?
    Chris_Morgand7m's avatar
That's dynamic weight. ie, 75 kgs bouncing over a speed-up could easily double or triple.

Saw a Tent Box convention on a site we were on last year. These are cool but unfortunately very impractical for many reasons.

Dont bother giving any examples, i’ll just blindly take your word for it

Used something very similar driving through Namibia and Botswana last August. Camping often in unfenced sites so handy to be up on the roof there for obvious reasons and it was on top of a big Hilux so no weight issues. Found it to be a pain though when I had to pack it all down when we wanted to use the vehicle only to have to put it all up again when we got back. Always risked losing our spot as well. Mine was a faf with the dustcovers and straps - don't know about this one. Also no worries having to pack it while wet. Not sold on one for UK use tbh

Sounds like an incredible experience though. Travelling through the Kruger and stopping in the rest camps feels wild, this is next level!

If you had a car with a sunroof you could put stairs and make a maisonette.

What is the point of these? Unless you're on safari and don't want to be eaten by a lion, you'd be far better of spending less money on a better tent. Apparently they're a good way to crack windscreens on anything less than the average 4x4...

'aving a laff .......i must be missing something ...talk about solving a problem when there is'nt one ...

why would you spend a load of money and flaff around with this thing when you can just pitch an small easy tent next to your car !

unless you want to use it in some country which has loads of creepy crawlies queuing up to take a bite out of you (edited)

    Wet ground, uneven terrain…
And I don’t have one but I’m sure there’s plenty of other reasons. Just because it doesn’t work for you, doesn’t mean it’s not got benefits for others.

I think it's a twin of Sheepie Yuna Mini tent. Internal size is better for one person. I saw it too on Millets and other websites and tried the code. It also seems to be very light.

I gave up on idea of RTT after renting it twice. Going up and down the ladder is too much hasle. Pitching a pop up tent for quick stay is much easier and fuel economy doesn't suffer. Not to mention the fact, that pop up is much cheaper. (edited)

Just put the kids in it and take the ladder away
    EVAzSz-04's avatar
Which makes it a 7 seater!
  11. clingon's avatar
Why wouldn't you just put the seat back and sleep in the car?
    rrr99gp's avatar
Have you tried sleeping in a Smart car?
  12. Zosia's avatar
Or just buy used Ventura on Ebay. There's plenty of them.

I lived in a roof tent for a year, in Africa. Which is where these things do best, not so much in the UK.

This one is too narrow for two at 110cm, you want 140cm wide unless you're both friends of Snow White.

Having to pack everything away to go anywhere is a pain, along with climbing on the side of the car to pack it away and put the covers on unless it's a clamshell type (unlikely at this price).

The midnight call of nature down the ladder is also annoying. Get up, put clothes on, unzip tent, put shoes on, vault down ladder witout falling down it, trudge to ablutions, reverse process to go back to bed.

As for wild camping, maybe in deepest Scotland, but stopping at the side of the road and getting a roof tent out in most places is likely to get you some unwelcome attention from the local neer do wells.

Plus sides are it's relatively quick to set up and put away and mattress and bedding are normally mostly ready to go, you're off the ground out of the mud and are not going to float away in the next Glastonbury flood, and it saves space in the car.

Definitely check the roof loading for your vehicle. Tent + a couple of people could be over 200kg and not all roof bars/rails etc are rated for that.
  14. guest5234's avatar
had one but while we were sleeping in it someones stole the car.

    You got me there

Gosh I really don't understand why some people are getting so defensive about this logical reinvention of a tent.

Its safely sits on your car, it's pops up in 10 seconds, has a built in memory foam mattress, and leaves you with your car to work as storage.

They're brilliant, they are expensive. For some people the convenience is worth the expense, for others it isn't.

Some will enjoy it, some won't. This is a very good price for one.
    Zosia's avatar
Fuel efficiency is worse with tent on the roof, clamshell pops up quickly, soft shell not necessary, you have to pack it, if you want to drive anywhere. And with tall car, there might be height limits at car parks.

Seems like a decent alternative to spending 400k on a damp 1 bed in the middle of town that some boomer bought for 15 grand in the 80s
  17. BeerGoggles's avatar
This looks excellent for some wild camping.
    __BAM's avatar
...but you can only camp where the car can go. Kinda defeats the purpose IMO.
  18. chitychatty's avatar
So, I think we can sum up from these comments that people who like a lot of fluffy bedding and a huge porch to derobe in aren't into small tents with no porch. And possibly have issues hauling their asses up a ladder.

These look awesome..I wish I had the cojones to sleep In one ⛺️ 🚗

    Come on, let's gather benefits:
    - less likely to have you car stolen
    - you can stay in city centre for free
    ..
    zombie_unchained's avatar
    May be more likely

Bought this easter weekend for £640 and hopefully £40 quidco. Seems ok for the price but haven't used it yet . Bonus of this one compared to others is its (fairly)lightweight at 40kg and i can just about get it up on my own ( story of my life)

Technically wild camping is illegal in England and Wales.
    villageidiotdan's avatar
Yet, sleeping in your car/campervan isn't, providing you are not on private land. (edited)
  25. deleted2506931's avatar
I'm not sure if there are any regulations with these, does anyone know if somebody can be in the tent while the car is being driven?
    rrr99gp's avatar
Yes but it is only suitable for in-laws.
  26. UsefulRanger's avatar
I love the idea though I’m too fat and the car would be doing wheelies as soon as I got in the thing. On the plus side the car would fit in smaller gaps sideways as a result (edited)
  27. mjr600's avatar
Oh goodness these things are terrible in the UK, often bought by people with little or no experience of camping and based on their perceived ' style '. Dodgy ladder to climb up, dodgy ladder to climb down on a rainy night at 3am to pop out and use the loo, owners partners always look unhappy with that ' what has he bought now ' frown. No safe place to boil a kettle in the morning when it's coming sideways at 30mph, but at least owners won't be troubled by bears, snakes or wild cats on that nice site just outside Filey

Can I put my mother in law in this and stay in a nice Airbnb nearby?
    rrr99gp's avatar
That is recommended in the instruction booklet included.

anoyone knows how this compares to the decathlon one??
    onotron's avatar
I have the decathlon one and this looks smaller. However it is also much lighter as well. The Decathlon one is comfortable with 2 people but we also manage to squeeze our 8 year old in as well. This looks tight for two people.

Abbey wood caravan and motorhome club site. No probs. 😁
  34. onotron's avatar
37.5kg is really light - most I've seen are at least 50kg. Although this one does look smaller than most so might not be as comfortable for 2 people.

Is there any benefit to putting your tent on your car roof instead of the ground? It's alot of money for the novelty
