Back on sale for those that missed it in the Steam Summer sale

Half-Life: Alyx is Valve’s VR return to the Half-Life series. It’s the story of an impossible fight against a vicious alien race known as the Combine, set between the events of Half-Life and Half-Life 2.

Playing as Alyx Vance, you are humanity’s only chance for survival. The Combine’s control of the planet since the Black Mesa incident has only strengthened as they corral the remaining population in cities. Among them are some of Earth’s greatest scientists: you and your father, Dr. Eli Vance.

As founders of a fledgling resistance, you’ve continued your clandestine scientific activity—performing critical research, and building invaluable tools for the few humans brave enough to defy the Combine.

Every day, you learn more about your enemy, and every day you work toward finding a weakness.

ABOUT GAMEPLAY IN VR:

Valve’s return to the Half-Life universe that started it all was built from the ground up for virtual reality. VR was built to enable the gameplay that sits at the heart of Half-Life.

Immerse yourself in deep environmental interactions, puzzle solving, world exploration, and visceral combat.

Lean to aim around a broken wall and under a Barnacle to make an impossible shot. Rummage through shelves to find a healing syringe and some shotgun shells. Manipulate tools to hack alien interfaces. Toss a bottle through a window to distract an enemy. Rip a Headcrab off your face and throw it out the window.

COMMUNITY-BUILT ENVIRONMENTS

A set of Source 2 tools for building new levels is included with the game, enabling any player to build and contribute new environments for the community to enjoy through Half-Life: Alyx's Steam Workshop. Hammer, Valve’s level authoring tool, has been updated with all of the game's virtual reality gameplay tools and components.

All you need to run this game is:
    - Oculus Quest 2
    - A PC/Laptop with Core i7 or AMD equivalent, 16GB of DDR4 RAM (very important to have 16GB), a Geforce GTX 1660Ti or AMD equivalent.
    - a cable to connect your PC/Laptop to the Oculus Quest 2
    - an app from the Oculus Quest store. Can’t remember which one but it’s called something like Virtual Desktop and it costs around £20 and there are guides on YouTube.
I think that’s it. You connect the Oculus Quest 2 to your PC/Laptop with the cable. Put the Oculus Quest 2 on and open the Virtual Desktop app so you can see your desktop in the Oculus Quest 2. You run the game from your Virtual Desktop on Oculus Quest 2 and that’s it. The Valve logo appears, the famous Valve sound from the old Half-Life days plays and you’re in! Works great. Enjoy! Was tempted to get this in the last sale, still tempted.
Heard the game is short, but have some good mods.
    What good mods are there?

Really good bioshock mods, plus goldeneye.
There are so many though you will find plenty as there is a big community for this.
The game isn't too short, think I completed in about 10 to 12 hours but the game is so good, I have played it through twice, by far the best vr game released do far

Newbie to PC gaming. I've been gifted this which has a GTX 1060 graphics card

Would this suffice to play Half-Life: Alyx on the quest 2?

    Any advice is welcomed

Might just work but you're not meeting minimum requirements. As mentioned above I've got it working on quest 2 via airlink with a similar graphics card and 8gb ram. I did upgrade my ram after the first few chapters though but it played fine on 8gb (ddr4 3200). As crabby09 said it's worth a try. There are videos to show you how to get it to run on quest 2. Essentially you need to download steam and steam vr

Amazing, must play, almost life changing game if you've never experienced VR with a 10x10m roomscsle boundary. But also the game that's ruined the quest for me as every other VR experience is a bit crap in comparison, and I've stopped trying to finish witcher 3 after 300 hours as its not immersive enough now.

This game blows your mind from literally the first minute of playing. Must play and it feels like the future of FPS games. Valve being Valve again with this gem

Head and shoulders above anything else I've come across on VR, worth every penny.

Having said that, if the thought of face crabs jumping at you in the dark seems unsettling then don't bother, I nearly had to stop playing a few times.. (edited)

The benchmark VR title, the rest are just daft and tablet quality.

I know I'll get told to go out and buy a VR set and that it's nothing like the VR experience etc, etc but can you play it without VR?
    Holooky's avatar

No and even if you could it would be rubbish. Alyx is built for VR and the VR experience is what makes it so good.

Playing in VR is a completely different experience and takes a lot longer as you gradually work your way through it. If you played it as a standard 2D FPS you could breeze through it in a hour or so.

This is an utterly amazing VR game ..simply the best IMO.

Sadly I have not finished it yet, for the simple reason being... I am too scared to jump down a hole and confront my Demons LOL (edited)

Played this game on my GTX1080 with the Cv1, and i loved it, i then played it again with the OG vive with the index knuckles and loved it even more.....a game that raised the vr bar so high that still no one other devs has come even close.

One of about 3 VR games actually worth owning.
This shows what VR can be really like in generations to come and nothign comes close.

The best thing about this game is not only the great single player experience but the Workshop has so much free content too. There's even a Bioshock Total conversion Return to Rapture 1

They won't... But I believe modders have made it so you can play without VR. Think it loses a lot by doing so as it was designed for VR but worth looking into if you definitely won't get a vr set

Had my quest headset for yours ... finally got round to buying a Legion T5 PC off hearr ... About a grand, complete overkill, but means I'll be future proof for years to come with it's 3070 gpu.

does give quite a bit of scare jumps .. Ive found myself playing the mods to give me a break lol ... Theres an excellent John Wick type mod where youve got to get up through a building to kill a guy on a chopper.

It's too hot for VR nonsense at the moment unless you live in an air-conditioned house. It's bad enough when I'm just in my sim rig sitting down, never mind anything a bit more active.
