I get its an RC car, but why do the proportions have to be off?

If you bought a diecast it would be a scaled down replica.

It's because the cars all have to fit the same chassis dimensions (in this case an M-05) so the wheelbase and track is pretty much fixed and the body has to be styled as a best fit.

In this case the original car is too narrow for the dimensions of the M-05. They've already stretched it as far as they dare but that still leaves the big arches required to cover the wheels.

The MX-5 is a great fit on that chassis but it just feels wrong to have a FWD MX5!

    Weirdly I thought that the M-05 was a 1:10 scale not a 1:12.

So it doesn't include the radio gear, controller, batteries, etc?

Will have motor and speed controller. Bring your own battery + charger, servo, radio transmitter/receiver (you can get a package of those from about £60).

Shell is also unpainted so you'll need some spray paint suitable for polycarbonate too. The Tamiya paints are about £7 each.

Any good entry level petrol motor rc?

Going all electric nowerdays. Nitro is being phased out as their cost to performance ratio doesn't come close to brushless and Li-Po tech.

Nitro stuff has been going up as it's become a niché. Expensive to manufacture and the very limited market has pushed the prices way up. (edited)

    Front wheel drive for authenticity;)

One of my favourite RC cars over the years was my Volvo 850 T5 BTCC Tamiya FF-01 based FWD touring car.

To the uninitiated it seemed a bit rubbish because it understeered if you just threw it into a corner under power but once I mastered the art of lift off oversteer and then pinning the throttle to bring it back in line I had it ripping around even the tightest of circuits.

It sure did like to eat front tyres though

I'd be tempted with an M-05 for nostalgia but I just don't think it would be the same without all the weight being over the front wheels like it was on the FF-01. (edited)
