Recordings (PVR function including time-shifted playback via TimeShift) to external data carriers are supported here. The energy-saving power supply also ensures very low power consumption. These kind of boxes are all well and good - receive hundreds of channels from different countries (from the satellites your dish is aligned to), but there's no EPG. I've found that without an EPG (program schedule) this type of box is useless to most ordinary users. You have to know which particular channels you want to watch and either be happy watching whatever is on on those, or use a Internet program guide.

What channels can it pick up without a card?

A lot, several hundred available depending on which satellite you decide to point the dish at.
Most people will be using an existing dish pointed at Astra 28.2/Eutelsat 28.5 as thats what Sky uses.
A full list of channels is available, this website claims for that satellite there are 443 here, en.kingofsat.net/pos….ph

Of course of those there will be ones of no interest to most including atleast a dozen different regional variations of each of the BBC channel, a few dozen of foreign language channels etc. (edited)

My LG TV will pick up all the FTA satellite channels and has EPG for them as well. Just in case someone’s sky box has gone kaput and they’ve got an LG TV with freesat they don’t need an extra box.

I wouldn't mind this but a few things , is the main connection via HDMI ? I see the scart connection at the back so I assume it can be also hdmi, all the reviews are in German so is it easy enough to set up in the uk to astra if connecting to existing sky dish or does it require another LNB or different set up? and would a motorised dish work with this?

Hint: Try clicking on the 'Translate all reviews to English' box, at the top of the reviews.

I'm interested in a separate separate satellite receiver connected to a dish pointing at Astra 1.

Already have an Arris Freesat box pointing at Astra 2.

Other than brand name, as Zgemma are usually the go-to name for generic satellite receivers (from my research), what difference really is there between something like this and say, a Zgemma H11S?

The lack of an EPG is not a deal breaker as this is merely just a hobby and programming times can indeed be found online

    Many thanks
