The classic novel that inspired 'the greatest crime film of all time'

Tyrant, blackmailer, racketeer, murderer - his influence reaches every level of American society. Meet Don Corleone, a friendly man, a just man, a reasonable man. The deadliest lord of the Cosa Nostra. The Godfather.

But no man can stay on top forever, not when he has enemies on both sides of the law. As the ageing Vito Corleone nears the end of a long life of crime, his sons must step up to manage the family business. Sonny Corleone is an old hand, while World War II veteran Michael Corleone is unused to the world of crime and reluctant to plunge into the business.

Both the police and ruthless rival crime lords scent blood in the water. If the Corleone family is to survive, it needs a ruthless new don. But the price of success in a violent life may be too high to bear...

A modern masterpiece, The Godfather is a searing portrayal of the 1940s criminal underworld. Still shocking long after its initial publication, this compelling tale of blackmail, murder and family values is a true classic.

It is an enjoyable thriller if read keeping in mind the glamorisation of gangsterism by the reading public ie code of silence, coercion, resolution by violence and criminal activity.

There is absolutely nothing of virtue in organised crime. (edited)

Thank goodness you pointed that out, can't believe we've all gone through life thinking these characters are ideal role models

Such a great book it really puts meat on the bones of the film. The audiobook is great also if you're not a big reader.

I loved this book, now it has come up, and is .99p, would be rude not to buy with the other .99p books I have yet to read heat added. UPDATE: just found out that I already have it (edited)

Maybe memory fails, but didn't the author promote the "Husband Stitch" as a significant plot point in this book. It certainly didn't make it to the movie, tho- yet a more socially aware director might have kept it in the film version.

Not true. The so called husband stitch (a disputed medical procedure given to women after childbirth), is totally unrelated to the plotpoint you're referencing in the book.

It's an absolutely fantastic novel - really demonstrates how hard it is for films to do justice to books (even The Godfather) it's a stupendously good read.

The entire puzo collection is an amazing read, if you are a fan of the genre.

Thanks for posting. Bought. Heat added.
