It's impossible to get a licence from HMRC for distilling at home....there were some rumblings that a few years ago that they were going to help "craft" operations but nothing has happened.

If you really want to give it a go then the only legal route is to get a rectification licence. This will allow you to redistill duty paid alcohol. This is the route that most craft distilleries use nowadays.

As there has been a rise in the applications for this kind of licence I believe it is harder to get them. HMRC are keen to not have the average joe having large volumes of flammable materials without the correct and safe setup.

They no longer, for example, consider a kitchen worktop as a suitable are for ANY distillation, whereas five years ago you would get a rectification licence for up to 50 litre quantities by pretty much just asking for it.

Good information, and I would imagine anyone with the professional knowledge, ability and funding to get a license to start a legal operation is definitely not going to be interested free books about home distilling.

I used to love making homebrews when I was at school but we had no fancy kit. Used to just get apples that we'd nick from a local householders tree, take 1 bucket, some yeast and a load of sugar. Would leave the mixture stewing under Dave's bed and then sieve through the armpit of his unwashed t-shirt. Scrumpy it was not but drunk we certainly were as we headed back to the double maths lesson after break time was over

My grandad used to make spirit from any fruit being thrown out at the local market. He was very skilled at making it and aged the finished product it in barrels.

He died about 20 years ago and there was about 40 litres of the stuff - very very nice.

We shared it out around the family and we only ever drank it on special occasions and always in his memory.

We're down to the last couple of hundred ml and I would love to get as skilled as he was.

I think this book might be an interesting read.

    Thank you OP.

    Thanks Grandad!

License from HMRC is required for spirits, but not for beer and wine home production
