    I tried this myself and it's just not possible in the UK, we do not get enough sun. Maybe if you're a single person that doesn't use a dryer or anything with an element, it's probably doable. However when you have a family, you just cannot do it, no matter how many lead acid batteries I added, it was never enough. Solar panels also just couldn't charge anything up most of the year, in the winter they were useless, but also in the summer you'd only get 30 percent charge a day.

    Sorry that’s been your experience of it. It definitely is possible to live nearly off grid for a big chunk of the year. I’ve got 9kw solar and 15kWh battery and we’re essentially off grid from March to October including running an EV for all our transport.

    Winter is going to be tough, more so if you’re in Scotland than Cornwall, you can’t fight the physics of latitude unfortunately.

    Now, panels are so cheap that it makes little sense for anyone to pay for roof tiles when re-roofing, just throw panels on there, as long it’s not completely in shade, it’ll generate enough for the house’s background load.

    You can't really power a whole house from solar power with a DIY system... even with a top tier professionally installed system you'd need grid power some of the time because if it's really cloudy (as it is for months a time in the UK) even the best panels won't generate enough.
    What you can do though is have a handy backup system to ensure you can run some lights and a television and keep the freezer going even during a power cut, and you can also run some low-priorty stuff off of it to reduce your bills a bit.
    For example, on mine I run an electric pump that pumps water out of our hot tub, circulates it through some black mats and back into the hot tub. So it's using solar PV power to provide solar thermal water heating and it gets the water nice and warm for most of the summer. Saves a lot of money vs just using mains power to heat it all the time, but of course it costs a lot to set up too, so its only worth it over several years.

    The problem is though, is it worth it? The panels cost me 20K and I never saw that money back. Which then leads me onto what impact the panels have on the environment? Cause they aren't just using normal glass, they have to use high quality stuff. Then what I found out is no one wants them to be recycled... I tried calling up so many places and no one wanted them as they cannot be recycled. So in the end I had to sell them on eBay as faulty and claim ignorance lol.

    Just not a good sollution for the UK and I've move onto trying wind now which is crap as well because at night the wind tends to be lower, just when you need it.

    Honestly the best thing that works is wood, just burn wood and it provides most of what you need. I get hot water, I dry my clothes and it heats the house. I just go up my local woods and pick up all the wood I see on the ground and it's amazing. You do have to let it dry though or it puts out too much smoke.

    Is it still possible to make a profit from solar? If you don’t DIY it? (Pay for an installer?)

    Profit, no.
    If you want ~50% of your electricity free some of the time, after you've paid off the hardware and install costs, then it's still worth it.
