I have A BT SmartHub 2 router. Will this create a separate network that I have to manually switch to?

Yes it will create a separate network.

Using an old router downstairs with a bad signal when gaming upstairs. If I plug this in upstairs will it improve the signal and is it that simple to use?

Ideally you want to position the extended halfway between the good and bad location. It's an extended not a booster.

The Tether app which you use to support the device will give you an indication of the signal it receives. I have this device myself but more for the use of the ethernet port it has on the side.

So you could always buy two if you need it to reach your upstairs room and use the ethernet. (edited)

Or maybe I should go for the three 4g+ router instead?
