benefit of this over tethering on your phone (free feature)?

phone battery life, tethering is very power hungry

I have a question or two which may be obvious to some but I'm hoping for some help.
First time abroad for us as a family coming up and will be using a few devices such as tablets and laptops.
2 adults and 2 kids in Lanzarote so effectively Spain. Is this the way to go with this device? And is it wise to get a local sim on arrival or one from home? We're staying in a private apartment so it won't have wifi provided.

    Thanks in advance.

I normally just get a 5GB data addon for a fiver or so before travelling, thankfully most carriers include EU roaming (for now). I end up using about 1GB on my phone, most of the rest is used up by my laptop using the phone as a tether. Hope that helps. (edited)

I bought one to use with a Voxi sim, barely connected at all. Tried a lyca sim and a vodafone sim, same thing happened. 1-2mbps max. So I tried to return - they sent out a replacement instead. It DID connect but only for 10 seconds before disconnecting, and wouldn't reconnect unless I power cycled it. Absolute POS. It's been over 5 weeks since I returned both units (at my cost) and still awaiting a refund from MyMemory.

Prob too late for you now, but generally these devices do not auto configure with mvno such as voxi. Was only getting WCDMA,3G connection. Logged in, set a new profile for voxi, now a reasonable 20mbps (edited)

I’d be cautious of this. May not work on all the frequencies or do carrier aggregation so the 150mbit is the Category of LTE theoretical max speed. Likely it’ll be closer to 50mbit max

    Rubbish sent mine back

What is this is it Wi-Fi everywhere if you have it?
    KodaBear's avatar
You put a SIM card in it and you are left with a portable router to take 4G mobile broadband with you wherever you go broadcast over WiFi.

Essentially the same as switching on hotspot mode on your phone, but with better performance and not annihilating your phone’s battery in the process.

Have got three of these, took to Turkey the other week and all worked fine. Batteries don't last all day and can get quite warm, even hot in the Turkish weather, when charging and using at the same time

I’m sure this must be better than the little huawei thing I got in 2013, for £30, that’s been busting out Wi-Fi for 30 years.

Edit: ten years. The old maths isn't what it used to be (edited)

It's 2043 already? Where did all that time go?

Can I use this is Asia? Cheers

    Depends on the SIM surely?

What sort of latency would you expect
    freezing77's avatar
that depends on your local network but ping times using mobile networks are generally poor

I am looking for a 5G rauter, any recommendation!
    kane_th_gaming's avatar
Uh there’s a 5g one on the web I found

Good deal. Picked up previoudly for 25 also. Device works as expected and we run 3 or 4 devices of it with a lebara sim

Does anyone know if such routers, or this one specifically, has a stronger antenna, so is more capable of holding onto a signal and so maintaining a more stable, low latency connection?

I'm planning to work abroad for a short period of time and am planning to use my spare cheap mobile phone as a hotspot during that time, but if this would help my internet connection, I wouldn't mind paying the £25. I will be sat at a desk, so the modem will stay stationary. Cheers.

TPlink do a good range of routers that accept SIM cards but none close to £25

I have a 4g one that I bought 24 months ago and that has been great for me. It cost me £48 capable of 300Mps but discontinued now I think

wish 5g mifi would be this price, currently using cheap 5g phone as a hotspot.

Can you just put a normal SIM card in this or does it need a 'data only' SIM?

i.e. could I just use a normal Tesco PAYG card?
    KodaBear's avatar
This will accept any SIM Card. However a small few networks forbid the use of regular SIM cards in anything other than a mobile phone - So check the terms and conditions. O2 is one such company I know of who are completely against it. Almost all of the others I can think of are fine with this.

Unless this has a 5ghz bandwidth it will probably be quite a slow download speed. I can’t see anything in the spec so presume only 2.4ghz
    ChAdOx1's avatar
What are we talking about? 5GHz bandwidth? You mean frequency?

I presume you are talking about wifi network that this emits rather than network frequency band because there is no 5000MHz frequency band for 4G in UK.

The description says the up to 150Mbps download so even if the mifi only has wifi-4 with 2.4GHz, it will be more than fast enough. (edited)

It is not showing the exact frequency band supported, I won't take the risk getting a rubbish maybe
