Vitamin D is synthesized by the body on exposure to sunlight, however many people are now following health advice to avoid too much sun exposure, which reduces vitamin D levels in the body.

Can someone make their mind up, all this different advice. I can't work out whether to buy these or not!!
    thetreelogger's avatar
Although I’m not allowed to give you medical advice as you’re not my patient.

UKHSA guidance states that everyone should consider taking a form of supplementation in autumn/winter- the guidance states 400IU a day.

If you are vitamin D deficient (guidelines state that we shouldn’t routinely be testing because the majority of people are deficient), you should be on 800-2000units a day.

If you are particularly low, you will have symptoms (bone pain and weakness/tiredness being the two main symptoms) and will require a test via your GP to check your levels, your GP may prescribe you a once weekly 50,000unit dose for 6 weeks to bring your levels up more rapidly.

Short answer is, yes go for it.

    Hope that helps

be aware...i think the d3 has added calcium .....if you dont want that...eg for excess calcium bone problems ...you want just plain vitamin D .
    face-crab's avatar
This is not correct. D3 allows your cells take up calcium. This is why you should consider supplementing K2 if taking D3 as it helps your body deposit calcium on your bones and not in your blood vessels etc.
  3. AstalaVista's avatar
Don't forget to take Vit K2 as well which is recommended.............otherwise Vit D3 would be
    Mike747's avatar
Just because you're low on vit D doesnt mean you're low in K2 levels.
Unlike vitamin D you can get enough K2 vitamin through a normal diet

    Heres what the NHS say
'You should be able to get all the vitamin K you need by eating a varied and balanced diet.

Any vitamin K your body does not need immediately is stored in the liver for future use, so you do not need it in your diet every day."

Is this such a great deal? Amazon immediately showed me a 400 pack of 100 microgram tablets (so 4 times the strength of these) for £6.97.

Could well be I am missing something, I'm no expert on these things.

It's not its way over priced for strength and the amount of tablets
  5. Jaybeam's avatar
I can’t believe people think this is a good deal. Just got 400 easy swallow tablets 4000iu for £6.97 on Amazon. If you want to only take 1000iu cut them in four ( I usually cut in half for 2000iu ). Do the maths for goodness sake!
    face-crab's avatar
While this is fine for this type of tablet. Be aware that some tablets have a coating designed to protect the contents until it passes to the intestines for various reasons I won't go into. If cut, a time release pill may be rendered entirely useless as it's contents are destroyed in the digestive system.
Just in case someone sees this and thinks it applies universally.
    Cheers.

Edit: also, you'll want to keep the cut pills in an airtight container to reduce oxidation. (edited)

Fun fact… these cost 19p per pack to make and the most expensive part of the whole packaged product (including the tablet itself) is the foil on the blister pack (edited)

    This I can well believe.

    Not a good deal.
You need 4000iu a day just to maintain your current levels.
10,000iu is a good level during the darker days.
I've been taking 10,000iu a day, every day, for over 5 years and never been healthier.
My hip replacement healed in 4 weeks and I was back at work.
Vitamin D3 is also fat soluble so if you are overweight, you will lose some of that 1000iu before it reaches the places it needs to get to.
Take in conjuction with magnesium to help transport it around your body. I take vitamin K2 to help distribute the calcium around my body and not get stuck in my veins.
My vitamon D level 5 years ago was 7nmol/L. I was suffering from aches and pains (diagnosed with fibromyalgia) and on 36 tablets a day. I researched vitamin D3 and found out about high dosing (up to 50,000iu a day). Within 4 weeks I felt amazing. the pains had gone and I had a new lease of life. I came off the tablets and dropoped to 10,000iu a day. I had my levels checked again 3 month later and they were 235 nmol/L. The NHS say 74 nmol/L is optimal.
After discussing my levels with the specialist who did my hip replacement, he said I had the healithies levels of vitamin D he'd seen in a patient for a long time.
When I talked to my GP at the time, about it, he admitting knowing nothing about vitamin D.
    zioni's avatar
Superb Info and definitely vouch the power of vit D. I'll definitely be buying magnesium and k2. How much do you take of these? I'm taking 6000 vit d a day currently. And agree lifts mood and keeps your energy up.
  8. Pikiechu's avatar
This really is too much too be taking, it is 5 times the recommended daily dose. There isn't any evidence that taking a dose this large has any added benefits and there could be negative side effects.
    bugno's avatar
You can take 10000 a day in connection with vitamin K. Taking dose recommended by NHS is just about as good as not taking it at all
  9. MattMac's avatar
I personally wouldn't take Vitamin D (especially in higher than recommended doses) without K2. Hopefully anyone taking these either does some research themselves or sees an actual doctor. (edited)
    dannyboy7303's avatar
Don't listen to this person. You cannot, I repeat you cannot overdose on vit D. Take as much as you like. The benefits are available with a quick Google search.

80 comments and over a 1000 degrees heat and nobody has posted a deal or even standard priced alternative of a high dosage D3 and A K2 option! Although I’m guilty aswell! PS Also on an iPad, where do I find a degree symbol! Thanks in advance.

    Press and hold zero
  12. mfdoom420's avatar
Two points to note on this one:
    1. These do NOT include the vegetarian source of D3
    2. Vitamin K2 is also crucial for maximizing the benefits and minimizing the risks of vitamin D - these are not paired with K2

Personally I always buy D3 when it's paired with K2.
  13. billyboy101's avatar
1,000 iu x5 will do the trick !

Vit d is not actually a vitamin it’s a hormone soo important for your body’s defence against covid & flu scientists proved you can’t overdose starting point should be 4/5 thou iu a day ? cheap as chips on Amazon years supply at the said dose is roughly £8 ! (edited)
    MassiveBiscuits's avatar
This is nonsense. You absolutely can overdose on vitamin d. My gf was hospitalised when she was given a super strong dosage and an incorrect schedule to take them. Was taking massive amounts per day without realising.
  14. MrBook's avatar
Can anyone tell me the difference between this and the 1000iu vitamin D I got from Lidl?
The one from Lidl has double the amount of tablets (180) and costs the same price?
    Phil452's avatar
Nothing, both are pretty useless at that level, you want to be taking around 4000-5000IU in the winter months, and 2000-3000 otherwise, here in the UK we don't get enough sun, even in the summer months.

    amazon.co.uk/gp/…c=1

That is perfect for vitamin D levels, has K2 which helps absorption of D3.

It also significantly reduces mortality with COVID-19 with levels above 125 nmol/L, if you know your levels.

I have been as high as 130, GP not bothered at all, I think the NHS only recommends up to 100, which is still too low for optimal health.

Any dose < 10000IU per day won't give you toxicity, so 4-5000 definitely wont.
  15. coopus's avatar
Not a good price for such a low iu. 1000 compared to some of the ones on amazon
    amazon.co.uk/Vit…7K/

    This Is 4000 iu

Could anyone recommend a good multi vitamin (That doesn’t include B12 as I have to take that daily already)
    Lolexp's avatar
According to NHS guidance you only need about 1.5micrograms of b12 a day. Whilst there’s not enough evidence to determine the effects of too much b12, taking up to 2mg of b12 is unlikely to cause issues. That’s 1000 times more than your recommended intake.

It sounds like if you took a multivitamin, which will probably contain at least a few micrograms of b12, in addition to your usual b12 supplement that there shouldn’t be any issues. It’ll probably work out a lot cheaper and make things a lot simpler.

There is always debates on how much Vitamin D supplements you can take, read so much articles, comments, specialist etc etc … still no right or wrong dosage.
    xyhz123456's avatar
    Because everyone is different.
If your highly overweight with dark skin and a horrible diet and never go outside then you probably need these.
If your trim and ghostly pale with a good diet and regularly spend time outside during the day these may be of no benefit at all (Likely not harmful).
The only way you know for sure is a blood test.
  31. John.Host's avatar
Always supplement with a chelated magnesium when you take VitD, without it, it lies dormant in the body and causes calcification of the body.
    erroll's avatar
    Any recommendations please?

The NHS Recommended daily dose was the minimum needed to prevent Rickets...
Don't know if this has changed.
my nephew had rickets at 12m old & was given supplementary Vit D.
Went down the rabbit hole with this as my SIL said 'He'll grow out of it'
& refused to go to the GP. (pre pandemic)
I take 4,000 units a day, haven't had a cold /been sick in four years.
May well be a coincidence - lots more studies done due to Covid19.
