Tuned the same as guitar, it features a mahogany rim, mahogany neck with 22 fret fingerboard and smooth action die-cast tuners for tuning stability. The distressed Remo® head looks cool and has a warmer, fuller tone. It supports an ebony tipped bridge for best transfer of tone.

Good for guitar players that want the banjo sound.
Obviously if you are only interested in Banjo you would be better with a traditional 5-string.

Seems like a good price, Washburn make some nice gear

For any guitar players who want a quick route to banjo, an alternative to this would be to get a tenor banjo/4 string banjo. You can tune it to "chicago" tuning which is DGBe. That way you can just do 3 or 4 note chords voicings and don't have to learn a completely new tuning.

I've heard the negatives with the 6 string banjo are that the 2 low strings don't really sound that "banjo-like" therefore are a bit redundant. I haven't played one myself though so can't give my own opinion on that.

Care should be taken when playing as not to snap one's banjo string

This is one of those deals where I’m having to have words with myself. “Lodz you don’t need a banjo mate”

Thanks OP, I'd went into the Newcastle branch a couple of months ago but they had none in stock to try. At this price, I'll take the chance.

Didn't know there were 6 string banjos like this. Wonder what the disadvantages are? Sounds ideal in theory.
    matt.duncan's avatar
Disadvantages include not being able to play proper banjo stuff on it. Ideal if you want to sound like Mumford and Sons though.

If this is tuned like a normal guitar...then it's great. 😁

    I like.

    Drrrink.

I agree 12 string banjo is almost a sitar. (edited)

    It's not a banjo, its a banjitar.
I was given a Tanglewood very similar to this quite some time ago - can't say it sounds good

I wouldn't want to snap one of those strings.

Six string banjo? So basically a guitar with a tambourine for a body?
  24. nebulaman's avatar
One string for each of my Norfolk fingers.

You can actually tune your 6 string acoustic guitar so it sounds like a banjo, various means and methods, can also use a capo/retuning combo. The weird guitar tuning on the Goo Goo Dolls song Iris sounds a bit banjo like to me.
