This company is leave you behind. They never support you right. They always try to explain why is your system is not right. Also they stop supporting their products.

You will get emails like this:

    Hi,

We’re reaching out to inform you that starting June 2023, Western Digital will no longer be providing functional updates, security updates, and support for My Cloud Home devices on the WD Discovery desktop app. At this time, remote access to your My Cloud Home™ device will also no longer be available through the WD Discovery™ desktop app.

Could I connect this to a TV to view 1080p or higher footage and high Res photos saved to the hard drive? (edited)
    DealHunterChaos's avatar
I have had my 1TB one for about 3 or 4 years. Used it on a Phillips android smart TV and then a Samsung TV with no problem. Now using it as a PS5 storage for PS4 games.

Id actually prefer a recert, as its actually been looked at and tested by WD, and not just came off the production line and shoved out the door.
And, I have a 2tb and a 4tb, both recertified - its a no brainer at those prices
  5. yakkowarner's avatar
I have 5 of these attached to my plex server, all recertified, never had a problem with any of them, oldest is maybe 6 years old.
Of course they could fail as soon as I post this!
    littlecoupe's avatar
You're lucky. Mine fail at about 3 years.
  6. Classix440's avatar
If one of these fails do u lose everything on it or is there a way to recover it?
    MentalFloss's avatar
In general, good data recovery services will be more expensive than the drive itself. Should definitely have another copy somewhere

Are these the drives that people have sent back under warranty for a reason and WD then retest them and sell them on?
    reddragon105's avatar
I think those would be called refurbished (if any repairs needed to be made) and recertified is more likely drives that were returned for no reason - i..e. customer just changed mind, but WD still double check them before selling.

Either way, I've never had an issue with any of the ones I've bought over the years.

My 2gb works like a dream with my ps4

I've got 2 of the 4TB ones connected to a Lenovo sff PC running as a storage/plex server. I'd have another 4TB one if I needed the space, I've had no issues with them whatsoever. (edited)

Which could be the best for a MacBook Pro a HDD or SSD
    MentalFloss's avatar
If you aren't bothered with the speeds, then HDD is fine. SSD would be much faster so people use those for working on the laptop while HDDs generally for backing up stuff.

I know there are WD fans here but I must put in my £0.02 worth... I've just had SO many WD failures and the recertified stuff is even worse. When my drives all failed (13 of them) they would replace them with these fix-ups (re-certified, usually with a standard B&W version of the internal retail label) and they'd fail all within a year or so - I think I only ever had one exception and it was a very simple drive.

I honestly would be awfully careful with these, wouldn't even use them as a backup drive TBH and never ever as a store of stuff that can't be replaced. Each to his own I guess but like I said, my experience has been less than stellar (and I currently have 27 functional drives, only two still operational are WDs).

Which brands would you recommend for storing pics and video instead of Google clouds ? Tia

Could I use one of these as extra storage for my Xbox series x? Thanks
    MentalFloss's avatar
Yes but only for older games, not ones optimized for series S/X. For that you'd need the special ones Seagate makes and cost way more than this.

Have a 1TB My Passport from 2015 that is still going strong with daily usage, so £52.99 for a 4TB upgrade seems like a non brainer, even if it is recertified.
  14. Peter9588's avatar
Can you shuck these and use them internally on a pc?

Have 2tb hooked up to my ps5 and xbox series x for storage. Never missed a beat. Got a 1tb hooked up to my ps4. No issues with any of them

I've just had a 4tb fail on me and could use this. Thanks for sharing.

But I can get a 4tb Toshiba for around £20 more and it's new. (edited)

I've had multiple Toshiba drives fail, they are extremely fragile.

Thanks, 4TB ordered for a third backup drive. Had a couple of problems with an order back in December but eventually received it after opening a ticket, fingers crossed this one will make it through without issue.

I have 6 x 5TB doing Chia farming for the last ~1.5 years. No issues to report from the SMART data for each drive.

    Only 1 year warranty though

Ordered and it just so happens I’ve had a £99 external sat in my Amazon basket for over a month. I can now delete it.

A recertified WD Red Nas drive died on me. Ok, it's one personal experience, but never again from me.

Are these loud/noisy? I have an old 4tb drive but it’s too loud to use as a server. (edited)

For those that don't know WD got hacked and personal details are out hopefully nothing to compromising.
