Picked a bunch of these up last year for a planter. A year later they have held up well.

Our sleepers, put in by somebody else, have rotted fairly quickly. They are upright though so exposed end grain. We are replacing eith brick, however, some people we spoke to said they if they did sleepers they would line the side which the soil gpis against so its not permanently wet. Just thought I'd chuck that in the thread!

That's mad, I honestly thought properly treated sleepers were supposed to last 15 or more years! Is the treating process worse these days or something? Or maybe it just depends on the amount of rain you get and how soggy your soil is. I don't think mine would last long, I'm in a new build with a pond for a garden.

I noticed a few people picking these up at the weekend when I was in Wickes. Makes sense now, good price.

I've had them for over 6 years now, I did treat them with fence paint couple of years ago. Still holding out well.

1.2m is a bit short though imo.

Yeah definitely, better off ordering 2.4m 200x100mm from a local builders yars/timber merchants if you want to build something substantial. They can be cut easily with a panel saw if shorter lengths are needed.

That’s a great price as that was our local timber merchant pre-Covid price and they are now £26.60 (central Scotland). After checking a few suppliers I’d managed to get for £21.95 although now gone up to £22.95.

What area are you in and who is supplier as still need a lot more? I’m helping establish a community garden and already ordered over a hundred sleepers but need more.

After cutting over 20 of these in half with cordless circular saw and hand saw (no power on site) I can see the attraction of paying a bit more for ready cut halves although would need to be 100x200.

£12 is the standard price for these…… the 1.8m were £12 last year

It’s about the right price for a piddly 1.2m softwood sleeper. Maybe even a little bit on the expensive side. Personally I prefer a hardwood sleeper, which I’m picking up for around £30 per 2.4m sleeper (they were £25 per-covid). They look nicer and will last decades longer than these softwood ones. (edited)

Grow your own if you don't want to eat turnips, so much for the sunny uplands!

The other side isn't greener, it's brown bare fields

Surely you would be better off with reclaimed railway sleepers,?

Tend to ooze nasty black stuff at times so can’t be used for edible planters and don’t want anywhere you can brush against in case get on clothes.

There is a problem with the link on Wickes website or is it just my browser?
