I've had plenty of these leak over the years so went back to old style one

They're fine if you only use them over soft surfaces like grass but if you've got any hard surfaces they soon rub and the outer sleeve frays/tears. Then it's only a matter of time before the inner membrane goes as well.

Keep your receipt, we bought one last year and bubbles started to form as its integrity failed. Had to sling it towards end of year

What exactly makes these "expandable"? Am I missing something?

Think bicycle inner tube wrapped in a flexible fabric outer layer. The tube can expand/contract but is contained by the fabric outer. The hose expands/contracts with water pressure.
