iPhone battery at 85% good/bad

Purchased a used phone from eBay and it’s the iPhone 8 in great condition for £196 with their 20% off at the moment.

The phone arrived today and the battery health is 85%.

Can anyone tell me if this is good or shall I return it?

What’s a good battery heath for a used phone that I should be looking for.

    Three years and down to 85% is definitly fine then.

    According to Apple, a normal battery is designed to retain up to 80 per cent of its original capacity at 500 complete charge cycles when operating under normal conditions. If your iPhone’s battery maximum capacity is under 80 per cent, then its health has been significantly degraded and it needs replacing

    That seems reasonable for the age/price of it.

    For reference I have had the XS Max for like a year (brand new) and that’s at 90% health now

    I have android and there isn't option for battery health. There is battery …I have android and there isn't option for battery health. There is battery percentage but that only tells how mach charged battery is left.


    there might be on some makes of android, the same as some have removable battries which make sense..

    My phone is 2 and half years old, battery health is 90%. Couldn't tell you the difference between 100 & 90, it still seems like how it's always been. Charges quickly, can hold charge for about 2 days, wouldn't have any problems trusting a battery at 85%.

    Thanks all. I actually have an iPhone 7 which I purchased from music magpie last year and the battery dies when it gets to 20% left of charge and the brightness has a mind of its own.

    Funnily the battery health says 98% which is what it was when I purchased it. I am a heavy user to this doesn’t make sense to me. Sounds dodgy!

    Will return the iPhone 8 as I don’t want to have to change the battery or have problems a few months down the line.

My phone is also pants and cuts out during calls. I guess if you got a good price for the phone and are prepared to make compromises then 85% might be ok for your needs.[Image]


    If the difference between new and totally rubbish is 22% it couldn't be very good in the first place

    I got XS which is coming up-to 2 years old now and battery health is 85% so think it’s not bad considering the age. (edited)

    Settings - battery - battery health

    Should give you a percentage.

    I have an iPhone 8 purchased new from Apple 26 months ago and my battery health is currently at 88%. I see no degraded usage of the phone and it is quick and smooth enough as it has ever been as far as I can tell. It’s never crashed or came up with that ‘not able to support peak performance error warning’ so its probably fine from my experience.

    My nearly three year old iPhone 8 is at 82%. Bought it a week after release from Apple store. I was planing on getting Apple to put a new battery in it soon. As I am not bothered about upgrading.

    My iPhone 8 is at 82%. Had it for about 2.5 years. Not too bad I think. Might look at geting another battery put in it at some point though.

    does that mean that if for instance, I sold it to cex for £100, they would check the battery health, and then maybe change the offer to £70?

    I have huawei and also LG g5. Both does not have battery health option. LG g5 has really bad battery. Only last like an hour from fully charged so thought if I could check on that. LG one is about 5 years old.

    Mines currently 88% on a 1 yr old iPhone XS, Booker a genuis appointment as the battery was dropping significantly during the day, they said they don’t even look at the battery unless it’s below 80%

    When they get to around 80% is when you're likely to get battery issues. That will probably be between 6 months to a year depending on usage etc..

    Do you know if it’s quite straight forward to change iPhone 8 battery?

    Yes, Fairly easy, Plenty of Youtube howto's and I recommend Replacebase for replacement batteries. I've tried the OEM ones on there and the cheaper versions and they all seem fine. Even months later etc..

    They normally do it if battery degraded significantly and below 80% inside 2 years. They just replaced my phone. (edited)

    iPhone SE 32GB, 29 months since bought brand new from John Lewis, 86%. Basically been recklessly using it on watching videos, streaming movies and playing more intensive iOS games for the past 6 months and regularly charging it. (edited)

    The iPhone 8 is an old model that’s several years old, it’s never going to have perfect battery life. It’s one of the compromises of the cheaper price.

    It has gone from being fine for a day with general usage (WhatsApp, calls, browsing) when new to now without any use (eg overnight) the battery will go from 100% to off in 8 hours, with general use it lasts about 2.5 hours, full use 45 mins. I'm on hold with a phonecall at the moment and I can see the % going down like a timer!
