EE Data Gifting

Hoping someone knowledgeable could answer a few questions about data gifting on EE. Wife is currently on EE with unlimited data. I understand she can gift 100GB maximum (and this needs to be done from the first 100GB of her usage):

  • To enable data gifting, does she need to add another line on her account, or can I start a new contract myself? i.e. can anyone gift data to anyone?
  • What is the maximum amount you can gift in one go?
  • Do the person receiving the gift need to actually be out, or nearly out, of data to receive a gift?

Simply, I was under the impression that I could take out a really cheap 250mb contract, then get her to gift 100GB in one go at the start of the month - sorted.

Many thanks.

Think they all need to be on same account as it is all linked in the app..

If it’s on her account you get an additional 10% off too (edited)

I had read reports that data could only be gifted in 500mb chunks, so that seems to indicate that is no longer true. From what I've read on EE, on a linked account, 100GB can be moved from an unlimited account (but only the first 100GB of that accounts data usage) to another.

Yeah we've certainly moved way more than 500mb. That's hardly worth the effort of moving

I have 100GB of data, I always gift the wife. I can gift her as much data as I have. She's in an unlimited mins and txts for £8 a month. I gift her about 20GB a month, she's a light user. But yes both need to be in the same account through the app. It's simple.

Edit: as long as 1 of you have data you can donate as often and as much as you want. I just set a reminder every time the data resets each month. (edited)

    20gb a month is a light user!? I rarely use over 1gb.

Honestly she rarely uses much more than 1GB of data too. Between the work, home and family's home's she's connected to WiFi. If we go a long drive I have to turn my hotspot on and tether, thanks to a 16yr old daughter

    Hi @ukguy1
I've eventually tracked someone down who could help answer this.

I've had it confirmed that this is an old document and that the only fair usage policies for Data Gifting relate to unlimited plans.

You can only gift from from the first 100GB/120GB on unlimited plans.

Thanks for your patience whilst I looked into this.

Do you know if two accounts can be linked? I need to work out the difference between the 10% discount through my wife's account, or taking out an independent one with suitable offers/cashback.

We have two phones on my account, both different plans and offers and regularly move data allowances around. I've never moved more than 25gb though so not sure whether 100GB could be moved.

When our accounts were separate EE would gift data rather than move it but that was a goodwill gesture and I wouldn't want to request it regularly.

I was just about to do the same but came across this EE data gift policy from June 2018:

Funny that I've never had a problem gifting data or been contacted. It still let's me gift as much as I can. I gifted the missus 20GB at the start of the bill, she has 9GB left. I'll give give her 20GB again and see what happens in 2 days time when the monthly allowance resets.

I should have followed this up - I ended up transferring to EE under my wife's account. She's gifting me 100GB (from an unlimited plan). All good so far!

    Have they ever contacted you?
it seems the terms state that if you have 2 sims the limit is 10gb and if you gift more than that for 3months they’ll contact you.

For what it's worth, I've been doing it for 6 months now and no contact yet. Seems unfair for them to change the terms mid way through if that was the reason for taking it out. Wonder whether perhaps that is an empty threat anyway to push people onto doing the more expensive conventional route.

Never been in contact. Even with the app not working on my Xiaomi phone, I've been using the website to transfer data. I've never had a problem.

thanks guys how much do you gift, big amounts like 20GB?

Like you say, seems like an empty threat to just to stop abusers

Ive gifted away 100Gb this month and not been contacted by EE - this was a couple of weeks back. I was looking at gifting 159 of my 160Gb as i'm WFH and dont need it. Havent tried to top it up again though, will try and report back.

We've done 100GB each month, although to be fair I rarely use any of that since WFH.
