Just got an email. You can trade in your old echo devices and get money off new Amazon devices.

E.g I have an echo dot second gen. I can trade that in for £5 and get a 25% voucher off a new device so if I wanted an echo dot 4th gen that would be only £16.74

How it works
1. Tell us about your Amazon device
Answer a few questions about its condition to receive a
trade-in quote. Even non-working Amazon devices are
eligible.
2. Send it in for free
Print a label and send in your Amazon devices for
free-we'll verify its condition within 7 days.
3. Receive a gift card and buy a new Amazon device
Once your Amazon device is accepted, an Amazon.co.uk gift
card equal to the appraised value of your Amazon device
and a 25%-off discount towards a new Amazon device will
be automatically applied to your account.

See list of qualifying new devices: Echo Buds—wireless earbuds, Echo Dot (3rd generation), All-new Echo (3rd generation), Echo Show 5, Echo Show (2nd generation) or Echo Show 8. The discount can be used only towards the purchase of a new qualifying device dispatched from and sold by Amazon EU S.à r.l. and does not apply to other digital products, used products or products sold by sellers other than Amazon EU S.à r.l.

  • If you cancel the trade-in, your trade-in is not received within 35 days, the item you submitted for trade-in was rejected or the item is downgraded to a lower trade-in value and at the time of your submission you opted to receive the lower trade-in value rather than have the item returned to you, you authorise us to first deduct any charges from your trade-in Amazon gift card, with any remaining balance charged to your credit card on file.
  • If you received a promotional discount towards the purchase of a new qualifying device and you cancel the trade-in, your trade-in is not received within 35 calendar days, or your trade-in is rejected, then you authorise us to charge your payment method for the amount of the promotional discount used.

I'm not disagreeing with checking eBay, but the comment that they take 'a very small cut'... it's 12.8% of total sale value (including P&P) + 30p... So if you e.g. charge £4 P&P you still pay 51p of fee on that amount too. As per your example, I sold something for £75 + £3.99 P&P last week and fees were £10.41 on that, which is an awfully big cut in my opinion. People don't necessarily think about that. (edited)

However, do we know if you have to get the new one at their RRP, or you can use the voucher when they have a sale? If you can use it when they have a sale, you can practically get a device nearly for free. I read various comments suggesting this can be used only on full price devices and if that's the case, quite often it will cost you the same buying when they have a sale, without using this trade in/discount option, so no hassle.

I traded in my old echo and on Friday purchased a new Echo (4th Gen) with the free hue bulb at the black Friday price...so got both for £16.74 after the £25 trade in voucher and 25% off. So yes to using on promo prices and with bundle deals. (edited)

Amazon gives you 25% off as well. In order to get the same amount (money for old device + 25% off) for a new device, I think you need to sell an Echo 2 on ebay for about £40-50. I think that will be very difficult.

Its very strange that some get the discount immediately, and others have to wait - for that reason I tried starting a trade in - it didn't give me it instantly, so I cancelled the return, it seems pointless, when around now, by the time they receive and process the item, there probably wont be a deal on so will be gettting 25% off but at a higher price

And then what happens if they decide to reject your item, eg if they say its not working when you've marked that it does.....then they'd likely recharge you the 25%.

Also a PITA as seems to only want to let use UPS dropoff points, instead of the usual options, eg hermes, postoffices etc that use for returns, so the nearest for me several miles away instead of 0.5 (edited)

Am I missing something? The T&C's state " You will be eligible for an Amazon.co.uk gift card and the discount towards a new qualifying device only if your trade-in item is accepted." and "Once your qualifying device trade-in is accepted, you can place a new qualifying device in your basket and the discount will be automatically applied at checkout."

A "small cut" being circa 10% ebay fees and 3% for PayPal.

Most people compare the cost of items including the P&P. Add P&P, get a lower final bid. And eBay statistics show that people are more likely to bid on items with "free" P&P (edited)

True. I always add postage, and for a speaker £5 postage should will be fine. I did sold an Echo Dot 3 brand new on ebay for £35 when Amazon was selling them for £25, so some people don't even know the prices, will buy. But I did kept an eye on old Echo speakers on ebay as I was debating if I should sell it there, or trade in with Amazon. Most used Echo 2 were selling at £20-25 with postage included. If I sell one let's say for £25+ £5 postage, I will end up with £24 in my pocket. Amazon will give me £25 for my Echo + 25% off a new device. Which means about £40 in total, depending what I want to buy. Nobody will give me £40+£5 postage on a used Echo 2, when they can get it at almost the same price new, or they can get a newer model speaker during a sale for this price. (edited)
