As above, this is a great price for an auto wind unit.
However, it is cheaply made - I have this and a Lidl model, which is very similar to a hozelock model.
    The aldi is comparably:
    - Smaller in dimensions
    - More flexible tubing (kinks easier)
    - Connectors feel lighter (thinner plastic?)
    - Casing flexes slightly more.

The Lidl feels heavy duty and I love it, but side by side the aldi feels cheaper, and as such lighter duty.

These are subjective and anecdotal observations, both work great for me so far after 2yrs of medium-light duty use.
(Aldi from garden Room water butt, Lidl on house)

The failure point on these is always the internal spring of which I cannot comment, I haven't taken them apart .

    Just my two cents.
I would recommend this as it's a bargain but don't expect a hozelock level of duty output. And keep your receipt (edited)

I bought a hozelock last year, but haven't installed it yet (just moved into a house) turns out it's the massive one. The hose would lap my garden 10fold. Is it really a big downgrade, would you just stick with the big one?

I half expect the aldi to break after a few years of normal use, we don't use it nearly enough, but I love the Lidl, it fills me with confidence.
If your hozelock is too long, maybe give the Aldi a punt, depends on if you value the money. If you don't mind losing the £40, I would probably be inclined to keep the one you have, if you are not stressing the spring it will almost certainly last a very long time.

auto retracting wall mounted is a different league from an extendable hose. This is about half the price of anything comparable so very well priced. just a shame it seems you cant actually buy the thing! (edited)

This is still a great price compared to the Hozelock one. I bought this one last year and it was £35. But I can see with the cost of materials going up, they've had to slightly increase the price.

Chop the hozelock down to the size you want, the pipe cuts easy enough and just refit the connectors.
That said, I’ve had 2 hozelocks in 5 years, both have sprung a leak in the hose and both needed new fittings as they perished and cracked. (edited)

It's the unit itself, obviously being the biggest one the housing is massive.

The whole thing can’t hold 30m mate nothing to do with bragging. What sense does it makes to buy a retractable system when I use a connector which will not hold the connected hose? Brilliant suggestion

Do you recall whether they were about the same price when you bought them? I'm after an auto reel hose but don't need one urgently so could wait, but based on the other prices I've seen and the rising cost of goods I'm wondering whether just to spring for this.

I think I paid £40ish for the Aldi.
Lidl was £60 but also got it super cheap at £40. Both around start of 2020.

Also bought this in store over a year ago, I use it a lot as I have many potted trees to water and it's always worked well for me. For the price I got it at (can't remember sorry), it's certainly better than expected. All good.
