Only black or white colours. No blue or red.

It's pick your poison when it comes to smaller compact phones.

The S22 is a lovely phone and great cameras, update commitment but the battery life ☹️. And it's an exynos CPU and not Gen 8 SD.

The 6a has a 60hz screen... Which isn't a deal breaker for many, but even mid tier phones offer 120hz screens and it's going to be tough going back to 60hz once you've experienced 90\120hz.

This has a has the best SD copy at the moment and good battery life. But not the best cameras and lousy commitment to updates. Depending on your rate of upgrading phones, that may not be too much of an concern.

Perfectly summarized. a perfect phone doesnt exist like a perfect wife. its a myth. :P

Can anyone explain the downsides to not getting android updates? I ask as until earlier this year I was using a Samsung S9 which was on an old Android version. I now have a new phone with Android 12. Can't say it's got anything on it that I feel I was missing from the S9 and there are a few things I found a lot easier to do on the older version (notifications for example). Is it more a security issue that's the problem? Feel like most the time after 2-3 years phones need replacing because of the battery anyway.
    titooo's avatar
It gets 4 years of security updates. Just 2 years of OS updates.
So security shouldn't be an issue for the next 4 years

EDIT: I CAN'T FIND A SOURCE CONFIRMING THAT IT WILL HAVE 4 YEARS OF SECURIT UPDATES (edited)

If I wasn't too tight to pay more than about £200 for a phone I'd be all over this. Apart from lacking an sd card slot this would be pretty well perfect for me. 🔥

I had high hopes for this model but £700 for two years of updates just isn't cutting it. There are hardly any new phones of this size now, especially on the android platform. I feel that they really missed an opportunity. With the up and coming removal of the iPhone mini as well.
You would have to be brave to spend £700 and only receive two years of support.

Good replacement for the XZ2 Compact. Camera mediocre at least compared to the very best, short shelf life on updates but I don't care much. Always going to be trade offs for what is a very small phone by 2022 standards.

The XZ2C I have is two years out of date on updates and never made the slightest bit of difference to my overall quality of life or ability to sleep. Everything gets replaced eventually.
  6. jdandi's avatar
Is it correct that this phone only gets 2 years of Android updates to 2024?

In the market for a decent small phone. (edited)
    dogphish's avatar
That what they have stated yes. Which is a shame. But you never know, if it does sell well they might change that. I've decided to get it as I have been after a small phone with excellent battery life for ages.

Not the most attractive phone, but has a great battery, average cameras, poor video and only two years of confirmed updates.

Its smaller compared to the cheaper 6a and about the same size as the S22

The 9 model is a tiny bit shorter but you get the idea

    Red and blue now available
    Black_Americano's avatar
That’s good that they have become available.

Some of the reviewers on YouTube have called out the back of the phone can get quite dirty pretty quickly
  9. Haydor_Khan's avatar
Not sure why the site lists the phones as they are "in stock" - I just received an update from Asus stating they are excpecting stock mid-september now! Frustrating!

I went for the 16GB/256GB black one for £699 - first and last time I pre-order a phone. Let's just hope this phone is as good as user reviews state it is... my Pixel 6 needs to be retired.
    FlyingSquirrel's avatar
Spoke to Asus. We are essentially pre-ordering the stock they are expecting from Asus. They refer to it as in stock as once we order that batch it be out of stock

Don't agree with their view, but that is it.
  10. dundalk's avatar
In a number of countries Asus is offering free chromebook worth around £250-£270 when pre-ordering zenfone 9. Not in the UK, despite the price of the phone being the same.. I called Asus but their sales support is not aware of any planned promotions.. And obviously, they cannot match the offer they have for customers in other countries..
    ohsomeonenew's avatar
Yeah, not worth it in UK
  11. NE1L27's avatar
That's still pretty expensive for a "midrange" phone.

Thanks. This will be my next phone. At last someone's making a decent small phone with great battery life.
  13. samhw21's avatar
I wish more Android phones were 6 inches. Too many big phones these days. May have to go for this.
  14. Mr.Nutts's avatar
Voted cold because the camera lenses are too small
  15. DopeyDunker's avatar
I also like the fact this has a quick side-mounted fingerprint sensor rather than one of the naff optical ones some manufacturers use. (edited)
  16. titooo's avatar
Heat added because it's a great phone and still easy to use with one hand.
The main negative for me is that its been 4 years since I paid more than £500 for a phone, but I want to upgrade from my Huawei P30 and I really don't want to pay more than £500 for another phone that won't have headphone jack and be much bigger than my current phone.
  17. Deal_HUNT3R's avatar
They absolutely flopped by offering a measly 2 years of guaranteed updated on a 700 quid phone.

I mean how incapable must they be to understand competition is tough and they are not a top tier phone brand. A shame really as this phone is pretty good.
  18. yogS's avatar
    £649 for max 2 years of updates.!🤮
  19. ohsomeonenew's avatar
I like the size and the blue colour. Not at this price though. Looks like only white and black are available on UK
  20. DealTron's avatar
I was posting it earlier but thought people are not much interested in this one :). coming from you will generate more interest and heat

the phone is nice overall except price and cameras. at this price camera should have been better.
and at the current camera situation, price should be in 500-600 range. (edited)

    shame camera is midrange

The only downside of this is the software support. I think Asus is going to support just for 2 years.
    superleeds27's avatar
Agreed and the fact that updates aren't guaranteed every month like Samsung/Google etc.
  25. avidmuffin's avatar
Tempted by the pre-order, but probs gonna wait and see what other retailers stock it.

I've seen the Zenfone 8 on Amazon yesterday. Hoping this reaches Amazon too so I can pay for it monthly
  26. MrPhilo's avatar
The only good part is that the £50 upgrade is actually reasonable price for double storage + ram compared to other phone. But the 2 year update is a deal breaker like most people have mentioned.
    Bendown's avatar
One of the reasons I purchased the iphone 13 mini. cheaper and 5 years at least of updates.

Switchy you should set the first picture to one without the case on. It really doesn't flatter the phone. I'd argue it makes it quite ugly looking.

  30. KingCampo's avatar
Great size but too expensive for specs and only 2 years of updates.
  31. Black_Americano's avatar
I’m actually thinking of trading my iPhone 13 mini in for this.
  32. Michael_Robinson's avatar
Love that it's a smaller size phone...struggle with anything above 6.5inch really. For me this would be a perfect phone if it had faster charging, I knows it's 30w but once you have had 67w it's hard to go back. Also does it not have a under screen finger print reader as I do like these compared to the side mounted ones as they just unlock your phone when you put them in your pocket lol. Leather back on this would look the cats flaps 👌
    Haydor_Khan's avatar
I think it's fair to compare this phone to Pixel 6 - which only turbo charges upto 18w.
  33. Serfmio's avatar
I'm getting this phone just for the headphone jack... Frack every manufacturer taking that liberty away from us.

Kudos to Asus for going against the grain 👌🏼
  34. canonyau's avatar
Thanks for posting op. The reviews have been really positive. This also has the good old headphone jack so ticks a lot of boxes
  35. locktheworldout's avatar
Although at £50 more for the black with double the storage and RAM - that seems the better option for those that need it.
