As the title suggests, this scheme has been on since the end of last year, but hasn't been posted on site since then, so I thought a timely reminder for all those looking for work, that you can possibly get 6 months free 35mbps broadband whilst searching for a job

Read about it here, but there is a summary below
JOBSEEKERS can now get free broadband for six months thanks to a new initiative from TalkTalk and the UK government.

The new vouchers will be available to people who are looking for work and who have a work coach through JobCentre.

Will I qualify for free broadband and how does it work?

The DWP is responsible for identifying and referring participants based on their need.

As part of the Flexible Support Fund, TalkTalk provides referral codes to the DWP.

These codes are then passed onto eligible customers so they can use them to pre-pay for the service from the fund.

The customers then call TalkTalk directly using a dedicated number to redeem the code.

Jobseekers are offered a no-contract voucher for six months and the product’s usage is uncapped, meaning there are no data usage limits.

At the end of the six-month period, customers can choose to roll onto a contract with TalkTalk, or cancel the service without incurring any additional costs.

Why are we offering it?
Whilst jobcentres remained open to support the most vulnerable in society throughout the pandemic, much of the training and job support was moved online, affecting many jobseekers who were struggling without a fixed internet connection during lockdown.

At TalkTalk, we believe fast and reliable connectivity should be available for the many, not just for the few. We wanted to do what we could to help and so worked with the DWP to develop a specfic product to help tackle digital exclusion and remove barriers to employment.

Following the success of this trial, which saw people secure new employment as well as undertake training opportunities, we have now rolled out the scheme on a national scale to all Jobcentre Plus work coaches across England, Scotland and Wales, and are in discussions about launching it in Northern Ireland too.

How does it work?
As part of the Flexible Support Fund, we provide referral codes to the DWP, which the DWP distributes to eligible customers so they can use them to pre-pay the service from the fund. The customers then call us directly using a dedicated number to redeem these codes. The DWP is responsible for identifying and referring participants to us based on their need.

What’s included in the free TalkTalk broadband package for jobseekers?
Eligible jobseekers will be able to get the TalkTalk Fibre 35 package, which has an average download speed of 38Mbps and an average upload speed of 9Mbps. The Fibre 25 package, which is normally priced at £23 a month on an 18-month contract, will be available for free for six months.

More importantly, it doesn’t come with any obligation to continue with TalkTalk once the six months is over. In fact, the contract will terminate, rather than renew automatically. Customers will need to opt in to continue with TalkTalk or will be able to switch to a new broadband deal if they want.

This is a standard fibre broadband deal, offering jobseekers plenty of bandwidth and broadband speed to do the basics and get online while they’re looking for work. It doesn’t come with any extra services, such as inclusive calls or pay-TV services. But will include important key features, such as unlimited data usage, an included Wi-Fi router and access to its internet security features.

Note: if you choose to leave TalkTalk, you’ll need to return your Wi-Fi router in the supplied pre-paid returns service.

I do wonder just how many jobseekers don't have a mobile phone with something at least like the 1p per month Lebara sim (with data).

Side note, we currently have the lowest unemployment levels in 50 years and a labour market that's really struggling to find people to work.

Without the Internet I wouldn't even know that this sim existed... So...
    Probably many

Why don't they make it 65mb considering they charge £1 extra a month over 35

because this is all about tokenism and supporting big business, after all how many will get hooked into a contract after the 6 months,
the fact that we are having to pay for a basic service when huge amounts of the infrastructure has been built with public funding ( hidden of course )

Sounds great, I work with young people not in employment education or training (neet) and this could be a real lifeline for some folks.

It is a really good scheme to be fair

Great, but I wonder why they didn't just offer a sim card. Most if not all people have a smart phone now, but not everyone has a laptop or ability to install a broadband service.

Provably because broadband is infinitely more reliable?

When I go down south I can't even get signal enough to make a phonecall across 4 different networks and would have been without contact to the outside world without broadband

I'm the sponsor of 2 Ukrainian refugees and spoke to the Job Centre about this. They informed me that actually we didn't have to limit them to that offer, if we found a 12 month deal they would pay for the full 12 months. We chose a social tariff from BT at £15 a month and they are now refunding them each month for that.

Why aren't they just using your broadband?

When I signed up for 500mb/s FTTP with TalkTalk last December (2021) they offered me a 18 months deal with 6 months free. This feels like exactly the same deal just worded slightly differently. You are still getting 6 months free. Then you need to pay.
    Daves_mate's avatar
But you don't "need to pay". After free 6 months is over you can continue and pay or just cancel it.

I presume this is aimed to help those out of work get back into work. I live in a low income high unemployment town so even if this helps 1% of those that take up the offer find work then I'm all for it. I'm not a big fan of hand outs but there are genuine people out there that just need a little help / push in the right direction. (edited)

Seems a good idea, keep all the job seekers at home, looking for work, don't need the libraries as they seem to be predominantly the people in them, saves a bundle of money in library wages and sell off the buildings to property developers.

seems like a good deal could help some of my friends. Correct me if i'm wrong, if the landlord already has a broadband provider is it easy for them to switch to this?
