THE CLOSEST YOU EVER WANT TO BE TO NUCLEAR WAR

Nominated for seven BAFTAs, and winning four including Best Single Drama, this BBC film depicts the effects of global nuclear war on the city of Sheffield. Written by Barry Hines (Kes) and directed by Mick Jackson (The Bodyguard) it is unflinching in its presentation of the weeks leading up to war, the attack itself and the bleak years of nuclear winter that follow.

From its first broadcast Threads became one of the most significant and influential commissions ever seen on the BBC. When the drama aired on CNN in 1985 it was rumoured to have changed President Reagan's nuclear policy, and to date it has only been seen on UK TV screens three times. So disturbing is the screenplay that special permission from the highest editorial levels at the BBC is required for any TV screening.

This 2-disc set presents the original film remastered in 2k from the original BBC CRI 16mm prints. It is available in HD on Blu-Ray for the very first time in the UK, and includes the world premiere of the director-approved widescreen edition.

First broadcast Sunday 23 September 1984 on BBC2 at 9.30pm.

Special Features Include:

Audio Commentaries with lead actress Karen Meagher and Director Mick Jackson

Director-approved widescreen edition

PDF of Radio Times articles and letters (UK Exclusive)

Documentaries: Shooting the Annihilation, Auditioning for the Apocalypse, Destruction Designer, Stephen Thrower on Threads.

Scary stuff and better than the US counterpart 'The Day After.'

For anyone with an interest in Threads and nuclear war I can highly recommend the Atomic Hobo podcast.

For anyone interested in a fairly early film about nuclear war, the 1959 Gregory Peck film, "On the Beach" is pretty good. Though in reality, the radiation would not last as long, unless salted bombs were used.

Scared the life outta me as a kid. They showed it in our school

Saw it the first time a couple years ago as a grown adult. Still scared the life outta me. Might genuinely be one of the most frightening movies ever made. Holds up surprisingly well in many respects, too. A very straight script, acted professionally, and no great reliance on what would now be very outdated CGI all helps it still feel very real.

The usual somewhat comedic and lighthearted approach the BBC always take to dramas. I wish they would, for once, appreciate the serious nature of the subject matter they are covering. Heat from me.

These days, Sheffield city centre looks as if all this actually happened.... (edited)

I liked the bit where the woman is so scared at seeing the mushroom cloud she wee's her trouser leg and shoe.

    Classic. Voted hot. ☢️ (edited)

Growing up during the Cold War, this scared me so much when it came out (combined with the fact that I only live a few miles away from Sheffield ), that I joined the C.N.D. - Another good one was an animated film called 'When the Wind Blows'.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention, excellent film. It’s on BritBox for anyone who has it.

By far the scariest film I have ever seen.

This should be mandatory viewing for all school children and MPs.

Very rarely broadcast on TV, the last time on the BBC in 2003 I think.

Never been a better time to remaster this and show it again in the current climate

I made a satirical music video to Katie Meluas "When The Lights Go Out" using clips from Threads. It gathered over a million views and I had streams of comments from fans thinking it was official, begging Katie to play in their home town etc until YouTube blocked the video.

First time I saw this - I didn't sleep properly for about 3 weeks.

I think it was the "matter of fact" way they portrayed it all - that's what hit home. They knew precisely what the zeitgeist was at the time and what people were feeling from it, rare you get something quite that in tune with the era.

I always wondered what had happened in Sheffield and the people there. I am going to watch this documentary.
