Using these for the first time in Winter?

My advice if buying this sort of item in the Winter is to bring them inside at first and place them near a window that gets sunlight for a day or 2. Outside, try and place them in a position that will be in sunlight when it is out. They still charge OK with Winter sun. Set them to be totally off until triggered (Mode 1 on these). Unrealistic to expect solar lights to be on all the time in the UK, even at the height of Summer. We just don't have the climate for that.

I bought a couple of these at the end of Jan, it took a couple of days to charge them but have been great since.
They don't charge enough to leave them on dim all night with detection on for full beam, I put that down to the short days of winter.
Same price by the way (edited)

As I stated in the OP, it's optimistic to think solar lights in our climate will function fine on low all night, even in the Summer. These are best used in the off until triggered mode. It's the element of surprise that is key to the security here.

An elderly neighbour paid a lot of money to have security lights hard wired on her house (she has a lot of pretty expensive looking garden ornaments). The installer persuaded her to have them on all the time with no motion sensor. Within a few days a lot of her ornaments disappeared, she was distraught but I explained that having the lights on all night basically aided the teal leafs because they could clearly see the stuff she had and simply picked the best. No element of surprise at all no split second decision required as the lights were already on!

She got the installer to retro fit PIRs on them and has had no trouble since.

I've had my similar Mpow ones for around 4 years now and are still going strong. Still very bright and work all night in PIR mode.

I find MPOW and Reayos tend to be the better quality ones on the smaller security lights.

When performance has dropped or ultimately stopped I've never had to landfill these types of motion-triggered solar-charged devices.
The electronic control is generally robust but the rechargeable battery(s) have finite life so just changed the battery(s) to reinstate functionality.
Some batteries are multiple AAA / LR03 on older models; more recent models use single or dual 18650.
The stated 2200mAh battery capacity of OP item suggests it will be 1 x 18650 per light unit.
Some batteries are in internal spring-holders so simple to swap out; others are hardwired / clamp fit so require soldering iron or other less elegant electrical-contact and retention solutions.

If they're anything like all the other versions they'll barely last beyond a year.....landfill fodder & planet nasty.

I agree. I've switched to the Ever Ready ones and they have a replaceable 18650 battery inside. Found them more bright and have not gone twang yet.

Cold. Was £8.89 yesterday as posted on here.

£8.89 was for 1. This deal is for 2 so it's actually a better deal than yesterday

Can only speak from my experience but they stopped working within a month.
    ashyt16turbo's avatar
I think these cheaper ones are using cheaper batteries and are probably low capacity.
It's likely they're 18650's so could be replaced with better higher capacity ones. (edited)

Returning mine, really really poor quality. (edited)

They certainly won't charge during the nuclear winter after the sun has been blocked out by our collective vaporised dust.
    AgentBartonBones's avatar
who will be bothered since most of us will not be here before the nuclear winter falls!

We use a similar one of these in the bathroom, a miniscule saving on bills and doing a tiny bit for the planet. Obvs works better in summer months.
    PetrolHeadRR's avatar
Not sure how buying this will help the planet really. You can sell your car and use the bus or walk if you really want to do good for the planet 😜

Bought these last time, a couple of weeks back same price, left outside for over a week. Some sunshine but admittedly a lot of cloud and rain. Just wouldn't work, either of them. Returned for full refund. I have 3 of 2 sets of 2 I bought in 2018, all 3 still work, and out in same weather. (edited)

I'm sure if you asked the supplier for advice you could have had your lights shining as bright and white as their teeth.

I have similar one and use only on sensor mode. Also had to put tape on the sensor as it would trigger as cars went passed 8 metres away. Now it only turns on as you enter the garden.

I'm after something like this but either 3 pin plug based or rechargable battery for my bike shed. Anyone got any ideas? It'll be under perspex so not man enough solar alone
    ashyt16turbo's avatar
Why don't you get one with separate panel?
  15. Paul_Johnsonhel's avatar
I got these 2 weeks ago. For the price pretty decent.

I’ve had these since aug 22. Been great if they remotely see the sun ever lol.
My garage one is dim all night and all winter has worked, one down side of house, understandably has less energy.

Has anyone checked inside to see if the 18650 is spring-loaded or soldered?
