I have MSI X470 Gaming Plus MAX MB, and Ryzen 3600. Would it work and would it give significant performance?

I look forward to your advice as your generation has lot of knowledge in these things. I just upgraded to MSI RTX Ventus x2 12gb 3060 GPU this week.
    Thank you in advance.

Yes is the simple answer. This is the best CPU on AM4 for gaming, there isn't anything better on the AM4 platform. Anything more powerful has more cores/threads, but games aren't taking advantage on average of all those cores. This is the only CPU on AM4 that has 3D Cache. Its compute power is a little bit lower than a standard 5800X but for games that 3D cache is what makes the difference.

Also your GPU RTX 3060 this is now the most popular GPU on Steam and it replaces the GTX 1650 as most popular GPU. It's also good that you have the 12GB version as many games are badly optimised now and are eating up VRAM like it's going out of fashion.

Update your BIOS there should be an AGESA 1..2.0.8 update out for all AM4 MSI board except maybe X370 and below (Yeah I just checked and X370 is still on AGESA 1.2.0.7 update)

    Here it is > msi.com/Mot…ort

Just be clear you don't need 1.2.0.8 to support this CPU it was supported quite a few updates ago however any BIOS updating to AGESA 1.2.0.8 is the latest and all of them will be Beta versions but they should be fine. If you don't want Beta then update to the previous BIOS which updated AGESA to 1.2.0.7. (edited)

Would this be supported by my mobo b550M-A pro? Yes right as its AM4? Wanna be sure before paying
    Unrecogniseduser's avatar
I had it working fine with my ASUS B450M-Aii no problems, now have it running in a gigabyte B550M DS3H. Again no problems.

However, you will need to undervolt it if you want to get the max boost speed out of the chip. Plenty of tutorials out there on PBO2.

I wasn’t able to get full boost, even with an AIO until I did some under volting on the CPU.

    Hope this helps.

Great price, I got it last week and upgraded from an 3600x on an 450 motherboard, and is a massive impovemnt in games!
    Bumnut53's avatar
I have a 3700x but can't decide if I should get one of these, I don't want to have to replace my motherboard and RAM so maybe I should pull the trigger on this. When you say a massive improvement what do you mean? Can you give a bit more detail please?
  4. Ve33iE's avatar
    Worth the upgrade from a 3800x ??
    StihlCoy's avatar
I upgraded from a 3700x to the 5800x3d when it was £320 a few months ago, no regrets at all, brilliant upgrade for gaming on an existing AM4 platform. Even better now its sub £300 !

I picked up one of the Lenovo deals a while back that came with the Radeon RX 6800 XT and, bizarely, the 5700G. It's obviously a capable CPU but an odd match to the GPU. Suspect I'd get £100-150 for it on ebay but it still feels a bit of an indulgance to spend £150-200 for this CPU upgrade.
    Czubaka's avatar
Whether your proprietary Lenovo mobo's bios supports it, is another question. B550 SHOULD out of the box but my cousin has the same hardware as you and his bios is ancient + your GPU is operating with PCI gen 3 at the moment because of 5700g. Cant remember if he managed to update it but the upgrade to 5800x3d could be worth it, depending on what you do with the hardware. (edited)

I have a b450 mb, R5 3600 & 3060ti. Can anyone advise is it worth upgrading to this now?
    Christee4's avatar
General consensus seems to be no, only if you have a 3080 or better GPU, the 5700x could be a worthwhile upgrade from the 3600, when it's around £170
  7. kelvinsimkins's avatar
Is this even worth it for a 5800x user?

Mainly game at 1440p on a RTX3080 if that helps
    kelvinsimkins's avatar
With everything on ultra it varies between 130-160fps

Why is the L3 cache important?
    b0nsta's avatar
It means more things can be kept on local cache memory on the cpu rather than being fetched from ram for workloads. Less distance to travel aka less latency results in faster performance
  9. vxl's avatar
250£ this is a good price
    fishmaster's avatar
No chance, this has only recently broken the £300 barrier.
  10. Owens93's avatar
This is the standard price now
  11. Smm0's avatar
£120 like the 5600 fingers crossed.
    Xyzac's avatar
    Sure, when AM6 comes out

Anyone looking for a new build / CPU at this price point should be looking at the i7 13700k instead. Much less chance of the usual RAM instability, and it’s faster in most use cases. Yes, performance with games that utilise the V-Cache on this CPU is impressive, but for me it’s not worth the potential stability / RAM problems that a lot of folk have with current AMD platforms.
    Unrecogniseduser's avatar
What RAM instability? Got three Ryzen systems and not seen any ram issues. Maybe it’s more the quality of RAM and timings than the platform itself?
  13. TheRaider's avatar
too much for a new build on a dead platform + 8 cores
    rev6's avatar
    You're paying for the cache.

I'm expecting this to drop in value when the 7800x3D comes to the market later this month because there's an outrageous amount of hype for that chip.

Hopefully we will see some good prices on the second hand market for these chips too.
    FireOnAWire's avatar
Think that's out in a couple of days isn't it?

    Eagerly awaiting reviews. (edited)

If anyone has smart spending through their employer? Currys will price match Amazon's price and you can get 6%-6.5% off buying vouchers/topping up reloadable card for Currys through smart spending.

Anyone that gets this make sure you update your bios and enable expo/xmp. When I installed mine I wasn’t getting amazing results, then I saw that the core clocks weren’t boosting. Updated to latest bios and frame rates shot through the roof. Also don’t need super fast ram either. Runs fine with 3000 ddr4.

Snapped one of these up recently. Great for gaming, especially for VR. I've got a 3080 and upgraded from a 5600x and the difference is way more noticable than I thought it would be. VR is now buttery smooth!

R7 7800x3d is the CPU to go for now. You need the am5 platform though.

    5600x / 4090 here, playing at 4k
doubt it would do much for me but tempted

I bet you haven't needed to touch the heating once so far this year with that 600w monster in your PC!
  21. Chick_TheLoaf's avatar
    Cooler for this?

My coolermaster liquid master lite 120 couldnt handle the temperature from it so I ended up just putting my 3600 back on..
    rev6's avatar
I'd be happy with a Thermalright Phantom Spirit SE. Or the Peerless Assassin SE. Who comes up with these names though. (edited)

Went from 3800x to this on a B550. Civ6 turn times much shorter now!

looking at the current landscape, I have been most impressed by the intel 13700k- a beast in gaming and productivity
I cant see anything from AMD that blows intel away like theyve been doing in the past
  25. alex_uk's avatar
Decent price, as some AMD processors over priced as price is above of £700+ is stupid!

Simply cannot decide whether to upgrade my AM4 R5 3600 platform to this CPU or pump in in the cash now and move over to AM5 + new 7800X3D. I don't particularly want to change motherboards (B450-f) or ram (32GB) etc as the system is still going strong, and I'm running a 1080ti, and have a 165hz 1440p monitor.

Either way I go I still will need to splash out for a new GPU, just unsure whether now is the time to do it or not :/
    Fents's avatar
Watch Linus' video on the 7800x3D as I believe they included the 3600 as a comparison.

I doubt you see that much difference in 1440p with a 1080ti given that they saw small differences with a 4090. (edited)

I torn between this and the Ryzen 9 5900x
    LGB87's avatar
    If mostly gaming, definitely this.

If mostly intense productivity, the 5900x

With a mixed load, or a lot of gaming and some lighter productivity, I'd go for this.

It is a big upgrade in most gaming situations.
