    30 day warranty I'm guessing?

7000 BTU, only good for a small room, 9-1000 needed for a bedroom, 12,000 for a lounge.

    From a comment last year

    hotukdeals.com/com…104

"Have had this for 3 years and it's great. Used to cool our 11m2 master bedroom fine and I mainly use it now in my box room study, which is only 5m2. I bought a bigger 12000 BTU for our new bedroom, as it's 16m2 and it wasn't quite coping last summer on that size, plus got a good deal from Toolstation. That is however a lot bigger and heavier, this is very portable and fits in my wardrobe, the other has to go out to the garage when not in use"

Personally I only see myself using this to cool the bedroom down before I go to sleep

I've got this and I would say its quite loud! Find a deal for noise cancelling headphones :P

I get the impression that all air conditioning units are noisy. How do you find it otherwise?

    electriq.co.uk/p/s…ner

Noise dB - Noise Level: 38-48 db low/high mode(sound power method) EU label: max 65 dB (sound pressure method)

for contrast, the Meaco equivalent is 53 db

I tried purchasing AEG ChillFlex Pro AXP26U558HW but they’re out of stock everywhere.

Any decent alternatives to that? I had Electriq before and it was rubbish. So now I have around £500 budget.

I’d definitely recommend trying to get hold of the that AEG model you mention or AXP26U338CW, which I own. Phenomenal unit. Unfortunately I’ve looked myself and its out of stock almost everywhere at the moment. I did a ton on research before I bought mine and its not all about btu’s.
Quality is vital and there are lots of crappy high btu units out there.

I purchased a 9000 BTU portable air con unit from Amazon last November for £237.99 (link)

After seeing this post I just went onto Amazon to see that same unit is now going for £339.99

If you are after one of these portable air con units I would recommend buying sooner rather than later as no doubt the price will rise as we move into summer.

I live in a mansion but got no money, i'm skint. I can only afford a cheap unit but it won't be effective.

    Chin up.

    How do these work?

Surely they just recirculate warm air and create more warmth in the process
    Nigel_Tufnel's avatar
No, the hot air gets dumped outside, you need a hose and window kit, they do work. They're less efficient than split systems but remember you only need this for a small number of days of the year. It's cooled my office down to 21C when without it it would have been literally 36-37 degrees without it. (edited)

Please measure the room space that you want to cool (LxWxH) or you could be ordering something that just won't be powerful (BTU) enough to do the job.

The following link will take you to a BTU calculator to advise you on what you should buy considering the size of the room you want to cool.

    That's for heating not cooling.

We use this to keep our downstair toilet in the West wing nice and cool.

I have a 12000 BTU that can just about cool my small bedroom, I wouldn't bother with this.
    Robdataff's avatar
How's it vented though? That makes a big difference to how effective it is.
  12. Nigel_Tufnel's avatar
Bought one of these 3 years ago, it's great for the money and was a lifesaver during the hottest summer days, but it will only cool a smallish room or office. The good thing about it is it's small and light compared to my bigger aircon units. (edited)

Good price but low BTU. I wouldn’t recommend getting one less than 9000BTU personally

I got mine a couple of years ago, 50% off during winter, as op says, now is the time before they are in demand and prices sky rocket like dehumidifiers did last year.
  16. duncanb1973's avatar
or buy a proper split air conditioner for under £400, admittedly it will cost around the same if not more to install, but it will do the job and is guaranteed for 5 years
    appliancesdirect.co.uk/p/t…BwE
    sgru's avatar
yeah much much better but people in the UK are not used to them, perhaps because summers haven't been so hot as in the last years... else where using split air conditioner is the normality since a life

Same every year mate! And yet I keep coming back? It's like compulsive viewing, got my aircon bingo card ready - just waiting for someone to complain about the window kit and I'll have a full house! Do I need professional help?

Best time to buy one of these is the winter. Also if you're one of those people who can't sleep when it's muggy make sure whatever air con you buy has a night mode or that compressor will keep your awake and potentially damage your hearing.

If you can. I had an email alert with Meaco and it didn't go off until this week
  21. fishleg003's avatar
2kw so we talking £1 an hour running cost?
    deathtrap3000's avatar
That's the cooling capacity, actual power consumption is 792w so 30p roughly an hour if it's constantly cooling.
  22. bass2k8's avatar
I saw these too, but delivery is in October? When summer will be over?
  23. londonstinks's avatar
Had an AMCOR 8,000 btu for about 5 years now.

My room is 10m2 and this just about does the job in height of summer. I'd be dead without it lol. (edited)
  24. Dan_the_man28's avatar
These are great only problem is cost of electricity is sky high so you either suffer by over heating or suffer a massive electricity bill
    Nigel_Tufnel's avatar
It's not that bad, think this is like 20p an hour. Depends on your definition of massive.

Got one of these second hand about 3 years ago for £100. It had been barely used by the original owner.

I worked very well during a few heatwaves and hot summers. It's quite hard to clean dust from the lower section at the back as it isn't easy to dismantle.

The top filter section at the back is easy to clean.

If anyone has tips on easily cleaning the bottom section of the grill at the back I would appreciate the advice.

When you put it away for the winter, any tips to avoid mold (if that's an issue)

I bought a similar AC back in the summer of 2020 in the midst of summer lockdown for my bedroom as I WFH. I paid around £250 I think. These AC's are good for the occasional few days of heatwaves, and then they get put away. I'd say in a year, it probs gets used around 10 days, but on those sweltering days, you'll be glad you got oen.

It's a big unit, and I have it stowed in my hallway. It's heavy, so can't be put in the loft and tbh you'd really struggle getting this thing upstairs or downstairs easily. I hear you can pay people to drill a big hole in your wall and keep it permanent. Still worth the money IMO for those occasional heatwave days

When I lived in Australia I had two portable units like this (much bigger as it was a larger room). There are units which take the condensation and dibble it over the radiator internally - this evaporates the condensate it collects and sends it out the exhaust port as moist air. This reduces or eliminates the need to keep emptying it every day (8 hours use in the case of my first one) and can improve cooling efficiency by up to 1kw of cooling on a 3.5kw cooling unit. Not all have it but it's enormously useful if you can find a unit with this installed. Otherwise emptying some units is irritating as you have to stick a pan under it and hope you don't pour it all over the carpet.

If I vote this 'hot', isn't it a contradiction in terms??
  29. Sam021's avatar
I don’t think anybody will be buying any or using them. Electricity costs 4x more than what it used to be.
