Be aware. There's no PCI locking on this. I bought this recently, and I'm trying to get the ideal situation out of it for home broadband. You can mess about with the bands to your own accord but since you can't lock onto a specific mast, it might end up connecting to the strongest signal.

So if a 4G-only tower overpowers the 5G signal, or if one tower gives significantly better speeds, then another - you might have to keep switching for it to connect to the better one.

I've heard the Zyxel NR5101 has this feature but is generally costs a decent bit more.

Let me know if you have any questions. (edited)

I bought it like 2 weeks ago but quickly cancelled the order as for £160 there is same router on CEX website with 2 year warranty. Came like new still with foil on the top.

Buy "3" version as zyxels are NOT LOCKED.
On ebay and cex you have "3" and "unlocked" versions but both does not have simlock.

I use it with SMARTY unlimited £16 a month. 5G mast

Hi, can I put my phone contract sim in there and just get unlimited data
    Gabz's avatar
With smarty, you can. I'm not sure about other ones. You need to check the terms and conditions for each. I'm using a smarty unlimited for home broadband and it's been fine for the last 4 years. I don't have a 5g phone so can't tell if the signal is better or worse. On my previous 4g router it was slower for sure. But it really depends on positioning. Especially with 5g. In one window I get 4g only @20-30megabits/s, but the other has 5g @300megabits

Get the MC801A for around £100-120 brand new on ebay. I get 450MB/S with 5G mast 1.2 miles away from me.
    bharathomes's avatar
Where do you place ur router is it by the window and do u use external antenners
  5. Ahsaf's avatar
If you use cellmapper to see what your nearest antenna bands are and lock to them you will get faster more stable speeds. Doing that raised my 750mb to 980mb DL speeds
  6. Gabz's avatar
Best to check it when it arrives. I have ordered the unlocked one and it arrived in a three branded box with the 3 logo on the router as well. As I'm using with smarty didn't bother to return it.

I had one of these from this seller, it was faulty as it couldn't lock on to any 5G networks. Got a replacement and that was fine. If you buy one make sure you test it, as there has been issues with an early batch of these.

If you go this route, you need to be in a strong 4G and 5G area (obviously) but also that you have checked congestion at peak times. It's not just about coverage. Many networks, have congestion issues:
    tutela.com/blo…020
The above is still fairly accurate. Three is heavily congested in the Bedfordshire area. This means that you could get high speed downloads at 3am in the morning, but it dropping to virtually nothing during the day.

For those that are gamers, also check out latency by pinging as landline broadband in general is more consistent with lower latency (but this rarely a problem these days if you have decent bandwidth).
    gen271674's avatar
3 is heavily congested when most folks are awake regardless of area. Can get super fast speeds. As long as everyone else is asleep. Is ridiculous (edited)
  9. emptypocketz's avatar
Has anyone compared one of these vs an mobile phones 5g hotspot?
    saitama_fan's avatar
Mobile phone cannot route the signal as well
  10. Eye-Will's avatar
I tested mine out in a 5g area and the mbs varied wildly. The reception is very sensitive, rotating it by 5 degrees can change it from an excellent signal to good. But leaving it with the best signal the speed at 6am was 773mbs and varied throughout the day. On the whole it was 110-350mbs, but it did drop to 19.89mbs at one point. I concluded from that that you aim it to locate the antenna and the mbs depends on how many people are locking onto that antenna at the time and what priority their downloads are allocated so in high population areas (or where lots of businesses use the same provider) the mbs can vary wildly.

Don't bother with the external antennas included in this deal.
The guys over in this ISP Review thread did a lot of testing and found the external ones are garbage and actually the internal antennas are pretty good. You can buy some decent external antennas, but expect to pay about the same money again as the router itself

Decent external aerials do not cost as much as the router.
  12. S3XTÖY's avatar
got this one last time for 139 GBP and it works great! with "any network", but you have to reset the router first.
  13. carlybaby69's avatar
Careful with these. Check the 3 forums. These have an issue getting 5g and maybe customers have been returning them.
    davidg_croydon's avatar
Nah, firmware update fixed that. They are brilliant boxes.

The price is for Grade C. B and A grades are more expensive, for information. Heat for this deal 🔥 (edited)

We have one of these boxes at work in our office, much better than the dog awful broadband that we were having to use up to that point. I'm very impressed.

    Anyone used this voxi
    Sheikh_AhmedHSF's avatar
Yes, I've been using it on VOXI - and what I can suggest is that (generally speaking - so not limited to VOXI), use this in an area with strong 5G signal. And if you're on VOXI strong N78 signal and not just N1.

I'm not in a strong 5G area so my speeds vary, but I can average around 80mbps. But I've had 300mbps on a good day.

Also if you're on anything other than 3, you will have to add the APN/internet settings for it to work. If you're on 3, just pop the sim in and you're good to go. (edited)
  18. Mandroid578's avatar
Royal mail lost my return to 3. So I'm down £480 with just a SIM to use
    TightNortherner's avatar
Bit of hard luck you’re having.

If you have proof of postage you won’t be “down” anything. If you didn’t get proof of postage that’s on you.

I have one of these and xbox live says there's a "mtu problem", I've Googled and it says to log on to your router and increase your mtu but i can't find that anywhere in its settings!! Anyone know how please? Xbox online runs fine though other than that mtu issue its great, i love it
    yacoboy's avatar
Try setting the MTU to 1380 on your xbox's network settings

can anyone recommend an external antenna for this unit? thank you
    BrianBoitano's avatar
If you read the threads on isp review most people find the internal antenna to be sufficient. This thing is huge.

What ping do people typically get on a 5g connection vs fibre broadband?
    Gabz's avatar
I'm a bit far away from the mast, covered by other flats but usually get between 10-35ish
  24. RickyWong's avatar
Are these things generally network locked?

Tempting as my broadband runs out next month and wanting a cheaper route without being tied in a contract.. great deal might read some reviews before ordering
  26. emptypocketz's avatar
Sounds very hit and miss, like you almost have to buy it and experiment with it and then spend a fair amount of time tweaking it, if you don't have fibre in your area or weak bb then Its worth a shot.

Pretty much. But even those with landline broadband, mobile can be used as backup. We're on Virgin Media which is pretty fast providing 1Gb speed, much faster than BT here which is about 70Mb speed. However, Virgin Media goes down more frequently than most. So it's great when working, but highly inconvinient when not.

We can use our mobile SIMs on Tesco Mobile (O2) to some extent, but also have backup router with backup PAYG SIMs on all other networks (the cheap virtual ones). If the downtime is prolonged, just top on the one with best reception to get value.

I live in London and rarely get 5G indoors anywhere on Three on my Pixel 7, even when I do get 5G it's slow as hell, dunno what other networks are like. Currently moving back to EE. (edited)
    WhoDecidedThat's avatar
Yeah, I use 1p Mobile for EE. EE is overall fastest in most places and least congested as it's overall the most expensive. 1P Mobile brings down the price and there is no difference it being a virtual carrier (some are at a disadvantage if virtual).

Can anyone explain in a bit more detail how to use cell mapper to lock into what bands etc to use please.

According to the router info page I'm connected to B3,B7, B1, n78 NR5g-NSA and when I go cell mapper and click on my nearest cell it just says B3.
Yesterday before I was playing with setting I was seeing 450 plus mbps and now I'm seeing around 250mbps which feels a bit of a shame and I've no idea what the settings were yesterday. Thanks in advance

Also is fast.com unreliable as the speeds on that seem double those of Ookla speedtest? (edited)
    Sheikh_AhmedHSF's avatar
For the most accurate speedtests, use testmy.net

What SIM are you using. You'll have to see what the Cell ID is on the router and check (each and every) tower info on Cellmapper in your area to see which mast your actually connected to.

It might also be a case that cellmapper doesn't have all the information for the specific tower (hence why it just says B3). Also Cellmapper doesn't show 5G bands/towers properly yet. (edited)

It's external antenna signal strength is weaker than internal antenna. Overall very good

    Hi folks,

just seen this after I bought Unlocked HUAWEI B535-232 CAT7 USB 300mbps 4G/LTE with external antennas  last weekend.£80
im unsure whether my area has decent 5g coverage.
Is there any value in swapping for something like this
I would be more than happy with 100-200mb but unsure if this is even possible with any network providers .
    TIA

Sry...only saw this...u can easily check 5g coverage with network provider websites easily. Even my area didn't have 5g from 3 on their website, but in reality, they do. You can always check Internet speed with ur phone & decide how fast you want it to be.
4G moderns tend to have less advanced WiFi as well, which means slower speed & limitations of simultaneous devices, which could be a challenge with many smart devices. But I'd say, this one is definitely worth the money although it's the fastest one in paper (but not in reality) with same 5g wifi 6 specs.
