Just one good RAC story for good measure. A few months ago my car started making a strange noise at random times. Took it to my local garage and despite having the car all day they could not identify the problem. Then took it to 3 other garages, and one also could not figure out what the problem was, and the other two refused to even loot at it because they were "too busy". I eventually called the RAC and asked if they could help, and they sent a van to my home, the RAC guy took my car for a 5-minute drive, and correctly identified the problem was the alternator bearing.

Wow! I've just been reading the 1* reviews on Trustpilot! Shocking response times and most of these reviews seem to be within the last month or so.

Last time I called them out it was 2-3 hours but they fixed my car so I could limp to a garage and get it repaired. I guess you could look at this as a positive or negative experience but I'm happy they fixed the problem and did plenty of checks even if it took longer than I would have liked

As it happens I am waiting for them now. I called them out at 1.30pm and their latest text says they are coming between 8 and 10 pm!
In the mean time I have received a phone call from a stroppy bird trying to get them out of doing anything or I will have to pay implying speed hump or pothole damage is "an accident " and not covered!
In the mean time I have searched and lots of other people have also had problems with the RAC recently.
Will up date later. Be warned?

Update 7.30pm I get a message they have cancelled the call out! And someone was supposed to have rung me yo explain when they have not.
So used the app again and put them on notice of costs and charges.
Now had a text their eta to turn up is 11.05pm!

Update 8.30pm another phone call woman says previous woman put down I hit a "bollard" that's why they canceled. I said the woman was lying, I never said I hit a bollard. She said they record the calls, I said so do I. She then wants me to pay for a recovery call out for an accident!
Unbelievable. OK said I had googled RAC and all recent reviews we're one star and saying bad things. Her response was satisfied customers don't leave reviews.
I said I am not paying, I want them to come out, which is supposed to have bern within an hour and spend up to half hour fixing any problem.
Lets see if they turn up at 11.05pm?

    Here is another good story:
This very Sunday (bank holiday weekend) my engine suddenly got hot and as I was pulling to a safe spot, it blew out one of the hoses of the cooling system. Realizing I was not going anywhere, I decided to finally try my RAC cover that I was paying the past three years, but had never used.

So I installed the app and requested rescue service. I think within 10 minutes I was assigned to an expert that arrived about 45 minutes after my original request. He quickly confirmed what I already knew, and escalated to a recovery. About an hour later I was assigned to a recovery truck, that arrived approximately one and a half hours later. My car was loaded and both I and the car were taken home.

All in took approximately 4 hours. While it is a lot, it exceeded my expectations, as after reading all these reviews I was worried that I will have to wait till midnight.

Will certainly renew my subscription when it's due.

I used to sell RAC cover and had it myself. After being left on the M5 with 3 children, youngest was 3yrs at the time, for 3.5 hours I will never join them again. (edited)

A friend of ours broke down last Fri at 3pm and the RAC turned out at midnight and she was on her own !!! So terrible service, try AutoAid cheaper and better.

If you break down in a live lane (I presume you mean there was no hard shoulder) you’re meant to call either 999 or Highway England to get to you before the RAC do. The RAC aren’t going to risk their lives working or towing your car on a live lane without the lane being closed first.

A lot of people complain about all breakdown services but when you realise they don’t have an unlimited number of technicians, it depends when and where you break down. The area a single technician for RAC covers overnight is staggering.

They are undoubtedly the worst breakdown company!

I used them twice with a works vehicle and they contracted out both pick ups and both contractors said they prioritise all others before the RAC as they pay them the least, one said he was en-route to pick me up when he was diverted to another non RAC job…. Truly shocking! Their ETA’s kept being moved by an hour, multiple times.

Mine runs out in a week. Can I still use it?

So this is 50% off, then another 50% as cash back? Are we sure...?

The terms on TCB say "Not available if you’ve had RAC breakdown cover at any time in the past 4 months"

I am on renewal with them and the price has doubled, been with them for 8 years at very cheap renewals each time so no need for cashback deals etc, however in that time I called them out for the first time last year and it took them over 24 hours to get to me even though claiming for 8 hours of that they were on their way, eventually they admitted that because I had limped home the 1 mile to get my car somewhere secure, they considered me a non emergency when they were busy, even though I needed the car urgently. Will not be renewing!!! Not even sure why I am looking at deals

Since my call out 1.30 pm Latest message says they will turn up 10.58pm to 11.58pm?
    mummymelly's avatar
    Did they ever arrive?

Extra doesn't have national recovery, so AA comes cheaper?

RAC - avoid. Absolutely terrible service. Most customers waiting 5+ hours to get picked up. The company is a joke.
