But they do not fail because of the thrashing, but hours powered on, whether you are writing to them or not. For home users, who expect a HDD to last 'forever' with light use, they are money down the drain. And flash, which only really fails under max write conditions, will utterly destroy the HDD market.
PS hard drives can be engineered to last indefinitely under light usage, but they are not for highly cynical financial reasons (server farms happily replacing all HDDs after two years of ownership).
"Today, about 90% of the drives we own have lasted four years and 65% are living longer than six years"
And that's Backblaze, who absolutely hammer the disks (figuratively speaking).
Failure rate is linear up to 4 years, so any "server farm" (by which I think you mean storage farm) replacing every two years is just throwing money away. You may as well replace every 4 years. After that you start to have high failure rates and will end up spending more time doing failure replacements than routine replacements. (edited)

Much lower cost per gigabyte.
(Edit: finally found what I'm referring to: arstechnica.com/gad…ds/ ) (edited)
Cheap would be sub £14/terabyte and you regularly see that on Amazon for enterprise class drives.
In the Eurozone they regularly get under £13/terabyte, but import costs usually erase the savings for UK buyers (except NI).
Beware when using in a NAS, after 3 years of power on, drive will report warning. And you won't be able to distinguish whether the warning is genuine drive issue or something else.
I will be staying away from WD drives for now. Crazy anti-consumer moves, one after another.
If you do order from WD HDD jump onto TCB or quidco and get some cashback. (edited)
Excellent price though.
