I'll assume this isn't any good for gaming? My lad wants a gaming pc.

Nope, but 5500U is capable to run games as well at a lower level. Check youtube. Surprisingly good considering that it's not a dedicated GFX card.
But if the main point here is gaming then you need a GFX card in the PC, 100%.

Shame it's Windows and not Chrome.

Why? Can't you just run ChromeOS Flex on it if you really want?

Not great unless you're really lacking the space for a desktop, it's pretty expense for the specs really.
As it's basically a laptop mobo and parts, any hardware failures could be a problem too, especially once it's out of warranty.
Only 250 nits on that screen which may be a pain in well lit rooms (more so if it's well lit by having big windows with that big yellow thing in the sky beaming in).

you get USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports, so you are good to go for a nice few years.

3.2 Gen 1 is exactly the same as USB 3.0 (and 3.1 Gen1), it's still just a 5Gbps port, just the new (well, the new 'new') name. (edited)
