sorted by- Yes this one should feel quicker and less lag it's got faster CPU & RAM compared to the "HD Express".
4K Express: CPU: Quad Core@1.5GHz
RAM: 1GB
HD Express: CPU: Quad Core@1.2GHz
RAM: 512MB - Bit of advice.need something like this for our caravan. Roku or an amazon firestick ?I've gone from fire stick to roku and wouldn't look back. It's snappy and simple layout. I find fire stick very busy, trying to recommend shows and apps. Roku is striped backed and easy to use for kids and grand parents. It works. I found for stick slower but maybe it was an order model
- Thinking of dumping the firestick. Main reason being they are installing proprietary apps which have taken so much space on my 4K FS that I keep on getting message about short space. Lately Amazon kids.
Is Roku any better in this? Or are they too flooding with apps on their own?I don't think you get any issues with app sizes, as it's 99% streaming apps only and don't need much onboard space. as all the apps are basically content channels, I don't tend to use many apps apart from the subscription services I currently pay for, youtube, and an app to play my local network files (jellyfin). there's a local casting app that tries to mimic chromecasting but it's not that great. you can only use the roku app store. you do get adverts on the homepage, sometimes for the roku channel app, but I don't find it an issue. if you currently use an android or ios based tv device though, be wary you might not have equivalents of some apps on roku. - I have the old original Roku box from many years ago plugged into a HD TV, not 4k though.
Any benefit in upgrading to this?Better CPU/RAM, Better WiFi, better picture quality & smoother interface/ less app lag. If you believe these new extra features are a worthy upgrade and would be beneficial for you, then it's time to upgrade. - Been this price for a while, as got one earlier in the year for my mam, to make her dumb TV 'Smart', so she didn't need to by a new TV.AuthorLast deal posted was £11 more on the 30th June, has been £29 for quite some time on Amazon
hotukdeals.com/dea…451 (edited) - A good way to watch your iTunes purchases in 4K cheap, though it still doesn’t let you play the extras, such a tiny box, though. I was surprised when I got one a few years back to try out how light and small it is.
- This any good for plex x265?I've used a 4K roku stick that's about 3 years old with lots of 265 content on Jellyfin (similar to plex), and till recently only being served from a slow raspberry pi, and it all decodes fine on the roku (albeit I had to tweak some subtitle settings that triggered some transcoding on some content). I think general rule of thumb is that any device marketed for 4K content should be able to natively decode x265.
edit - just to also add I generally only watch 1080p content encoded to x265. I don't know about performance for actual 4K content (edited) - AuthorI have mentioned that in the description, limited stores though.
- Iptv on this?No .......you need a fire stick coming on prime day
- I have the 4k stick version and I'm not sure what the difference is but for the stick it really is great it's very quick and responsive I've always found amazon's interface to be a bit slow or sluggish but maybe that's just me. The only thing I would mentioned for the roku was that the remote seemed to go through battery really quickly, again maybe just me but something I definitely noticed, all in all really good thoughI have a non 4k Roku which I think has an identical remote and still on original batteries a year or more on, so either you or a faulty remote
- This or Chromecast (ignoring price difference) ?
I have an old Chromecast from about 10 years, but I would like the ability of having some apps like plex, etc.
Opinions? The chrome cast is literally just a device that uses your phone. This is dedicated and far quicker. But then you lose the functionality to stream your android phone (though it does have airplay for iOS devices) so it’s swings and roundabouts - Will this work on a regular hdmi port or does it have to be hdmi arc?Hdmi arc means your TV can send sound out to another device. This would be sending sound into your TV, so Arc not required.
- I wish they had an option with ethernet support that wasn't ridiculously expensive. I can't see why there isn't one, an ethernet port is cheap as chips. There are cheaper alternatives than the ones officially supported on their website support.roku.com/en-…813
An Amazon reviewer amazon.co.uk/gp/…XSH says this one for £10.99 is supported amazon.co.uk/gp/…PCZ - can you put kodi on it?
wish it had ethernet as well, why does everything have to be WiFiNope. Can screen mirror. Quite a locked down ecosystem. - Can you load stremio app on this? - asking for a friend 🥸
- Will this show freeview channels without relying on the roof aerial in an area has weak signal?Only the ones that have an app, which is just BBC, ITV, 4, Ch5 I think.
channelstore.roku.com/en-…-tv - as an unscrupulous person who wants to watch things via nefarious means, thanks op i needed a fresh one to hook into my plex server.Haha, just saw the previous comment
- Great price good player.
- microusb is the only issue for me (personally).Yeah I get what you mean it would've been good if everything was USB-C but for me I think for a device like this something that's always going to be stationed behind your TV it's fine with micro-USB because you'll hardly be removing the cable for it's lifetime usage.
- brilliant devices for use with Plex, just wish they had ethernet
- Is TV Mate app can be used the same way(!) As on firestick?
Thinking of dumping FS lite I haveRoku isn't much good for IPTV or it wasn't last time I tried. Don't think much has changed as it's a pretty locked down platform. - can you download apps like downloader ?
- This doesn’t support 1080p which is very odd. I need a streaming stick for an old 1080p plasma so this is a bit annoying. It definitely does support HD TVs, from 720p through to 1080p, and 4K. Where did you see it doesn't?
- this or amazon fire stick?
amazon allows kodi, this doe not... so i guess that is 1 for amazon straight away... (edited) - What are these devices actually for? Besides turning an old television into a smart television what other legitimate uses are they for?
I think they are used by unscrupulous people to watch stuff by nefarious means."What is bread actually for, besides eating?"
You've literally described its use.
You can't use this to watch anything nefarious, you're limited to official apps on the Roku store. (edited) - Is this just for people who don't have a Smart TV? Trying to work out if I am missing something as they always seem to popular.Yes. If you have other ways to access these apps on your TV then you don't need it. (edited)
- I already have a 4k uhd tv with Google built in. Is it worth getting this or would it be a redundant purchase?
- Out of stock
- I propose a vote .. any further Roku deals should contain the following lines ..
"No, you can't get IPTV on it"
and
"No, you can't put Kodi on it"and
"get a Firestick which is a million times more useful" - But 1 third party app can be installed on it 🤷That needs to be Roku format. You can't load an android (apk) into this. So finding a compatible IPTV app will be a challenge.
- Out of stock and showing as £30
- Just used the link and bought one, £18.99 delivery on the 27th. I can wait. (edited)
- Available at £18.99 Prime but also back available at £19.99 for anyone.
Look for "Non-Deal Price" on the right hand side. - oos
- still in stock with delivery by Friday 14th July (edited)
- Is it possible to hook up a USB drive to this and play MKV files?no
- Is this better than fire stickDepends what you wanna do. For a simple use interface, no bloat amd generally quite responsive yes.
If you want stuff to work with Alexa, like the Amazon ui and want to be able to sideload apps (which you can't really do on Roku) then go Amazon. - Does it have google play movies in 4kI think movies from Google play are hiding in the YouTube app from memory. I assume 4k works for that, I never bought any above HD
