"Up to" 281 miles doesn't seem particularly "long range" to me
    norbie's avatar
64kWh is quite large at the moment. As with all cars, it depends how you drive it in terms of range. I have one of these and get 300 miles in summer (rural & city driving), or 225 on motorway driving.

I charge at home for free (solar) or at 7.5p/unit on Octopus Go if there’s no sun. That makes a “tank” cost £4.80.

Loads more expensive to charge at public chargers and particularly at service stations (just like petrol), so best to charge at home if you can.

"July 2023 registered brand new cars".

Contradictory! They're not technically 'new' as you'll be the second owner, which will affect resale value. Also insist you get the V5 in your name on collection, not six months later (when dealer gets their 'demonstrator' kickback) which is common and has legal implications.

You have to ask why these are being dumped on the market with such a big discount.

Good car though if EV is your thing.
    PhoenixRising's avatar
The reason they're being dumped is because MG just released 2 new versions of the MG4.

    1. XPower version with 430 bhp and AWD
    2. Extended Range with 77kWh battery - 330 mile range

Both apparently have an MSRP of £36,495 RRP.

This car looks great and feels great. The wireless phone charger is pointless because any decent acceleration sends your phone into the back of the car.

I always use Android Auto by plugging my phone in and leaving it in the tray in the centre console. If you use this (or Apple CarPlay) then don't forget to use the built-in Wireless Hotspot, which apparently has unlimited data, but does connect via Sweden!

You'll want to turn Lane Keep Assist off which is located under the MG Pilot tab under the Vehicle button on the infotainment system. You need to do this every time you've had the car in Park. This is by far the worst thing on this car.

The adaptive cruise control is an easy to use feature and works really well, I particularly use this to ensure I don't speed as it can be easy to get carried away with the accelerator in this car. This does however freak out and slow you down if there's a stopped vehicle on the road, say parked up to the kerb in a residential area. You'll need to press the accelerator. This can be frustrating when you're trying to be lazy!

The car doesn't come with floor mats. From what I gather, MG don't include them in any new vehicle. Bizarre.

I have the aircon on almost permanently and drive in sport mode (again, needs changed every single time you've been in Park) and, at least in summer, I get around 200-250 miles from a full charge, and a good chunk of my driving is on motorways.

But, I love this car and it would take a strange set of personal circumstances for me to not recommend this car to you. It is so fun to drive (when you're the one driving it, not the technology!)

Like most electric cars, gaining good speed from 0 doesn't take long so in those hesitant moments of 'ooh, can I pull out into that gap?' the answer in this is probably yes.

buy it used in 7 years for £994

Only if UK were in a great depression
  5. dwattsy21's avatar
Sorry if this is a stupid question. When purchasing a EV like this, what's the best way to sort out a home charger?
    MicroManaged's avatar
Find a friendly local electrician. Companies that "specialise" in home charger installation like to charge a premium for what is essentially running a cable into a new RCBO/MCB into you'll consumer unit.

They will then notify the council/DNO of the install.
  6. trevorcocks's avatar
Once you have driven electric, you won't go back. The whole experience is completely different. Love my Skoda Enyaq. MG4 is a good all-rounder for family hatchback size.
    Feargal's avatar
Disagree. I had a Peugeot e2008 for 3 years .. now changed back to petrol (MHEV). Enjoying driving again. Too many variables having an EV. Hopefully in another 5 years tech and infastructure will have moved on leaps and bounds to make it more attractive and practical.
  7. Kookai231's avatar
Couple of things about this deal. Standard battery 51kwh is using a new technology lpa or Lifepo4. The long range or 40kwh can only be charged to 20-80% and real evdrydayl range is much less. This can be charge everyday to 100%. Degradation on this batteries are on line not like old where is massive degradation after 5-7-10 or cykles.. This batteries compare with old one can be cycled around 5 times more. The second thing is that there batteries can't catch Fire and ta made them you don't need kobalt And other rare minerals. Most new car manufacturers will use new batteries in new models but they have no fabric and technology ( ford is finishing a new mega battery factory in US), tesla is using this batteries in China and will switch to this.
    ghow007's avatar
That’s incorrect about the 20-80%. Recommendation for some batteries is to keep them charged between 20-80% to improve longevity of the battery, but charging to 100% and allowing to fall under 20% will have negligible effect doing this probably 50-60% of the time.
I have an ‘older style’ battery in my EV and have regularly charged to 100% using AC over the past 5yrs and overall degradation has been absolutely minimal. DC charging (away from home usually) would put greater strain on battery cells so the 20-80% would be more true here if always using DC.
  8. norbie's avatar
Wow that’s a big discount. I have one of these via a work leasing scheme. Great car!
  9. Mortal.Wombat's avatar
Excellent car at a fantastic price. Don't think the SE or long range SE models are as practical. The infotainment system is a bit buggy but the drive and handling are amazing. The app is really good, can schedule charging, remote unlock, pre heat etc.

This is about 2k less than I paid in April and back then it was the best value new EV I could find. (edited)
    BentoBox's avatar
Have to agree with you. I had one on pre order, loved the way it drove. But disliked the buggy infotainment and cheap seats.
Still a grest EV for the money, I juts couldn't live with the niggles.
  10. Uridium's avatar
Perfect car for people that hate cars and driving
    ben_ellis's avatar
I'm sure the petrol equivalent wouldn't be that fun to drive and probably much slower. I don't think a family hatchback is for thrill seekers.
  11. Daniel_Giles16's avatar
Wouldn't ever touch an MG work in motor Insurance and can tell you these cars are made with no future planning crash one and you will be sat paying a bill for a car that no-one can get parts too.
    CraigFerguson's avatar
I've read of a few owners who've had issues trying to find a fitter who can replace cracked/damaged windscreens and trying to get the cameras to calibrate.
  12. VictoriaCarney's avatar
We have this and it’s a nice dive but it’s going back …. Everything is controlled by the rig he screen and you have to go through numerous menus to do anything you want and the screen is not responsive.
Plus lane assist - you have to turn this off EVERY time you turn in the car. It’s very powerful and can cause accidents. (edited)
    MicroManaged's avatar
A "very powerful" car (this isn't btw) doesn't cause accidents, a poor driver causes accidents.
  13. amigang's avatar
This is the first EVI’ve seen that finally is a sensible range, price and size. it still needs to be a bit cheaper for me to afford it, but its postive direction.
    Lisa_rat's avatar
Look at the lower range version. This is the Trophy. They sell an SE at RRP 26.5k but you could have one for 23-24 if you shop around
  14. Joshfount's avatar
Best value EV on the market currently and at a good price ♨️
    plewis00's avatar
It's what the market needed. Anyone shopping in this price range doesn't have to rule out EVs or choose a low-spec model vs a higher-spec conventional fuel car - that's massive. Though I have heard of appalling customer support/dealerships and warranty niggles, maybe they will iron themselves out over time.
  15. cannibalwombat's avatar
This is a great deal. Best price I've seen for a new Trophy version. I test drove one a few months ago and liked it a lot. This is the one I'd get if I had the money! Heard they're making them with a rear wiper now. (edited)
    majorwedgy666's avatar
Really good looking car too. Definitely tempted by one private when they do us over for company car tax on these (edited)

Gosh, didn't realise MG are still around.

When I first met my lovely wife (many years ago), she was driving an MGB GT LE. It looked lovely, but weighed about as much as a tank, and rather than a man walking in front with a red flag, it needed a man walking behind with a shovel to pick up the bits that fell off it every time it went out for a spin. It was a piece of cr*p.

No relevance to this deal, of course. Just the addled reminiscences of an old duffer.

Heat added to compensate for my senile rambling.

    plewis00's avatar
Probably not the MG you remember - but still nice to see the classics on the road when they are looked after.

Not sure what the new China-owned MG have to do with the older sports cars (it's basically just a badge now) but no denying they are shaking up the car industry in a big and probably positive way.
  18. Kilbers's avatar
The reviews speak for themselves, it's great price for an EV. Has it's pros and cons just like any car but does leave you with a smile on your face.
  19. rastbury's avatar
If paying by PCP or loan. Be wary of the interest rate 10% over 5 years adds nearly 10k onto the ticket price. FYI. In comparison Tesla have 0%apr at the moment on pcp or hire purchase. (edited)
    ct9001's avatar
MG direct have 0 percent apr
  20. FREEZIN_WOLF's avatar
I believe I heard that VW have ceased their EV production because demand has dropped off a cliff.

With things like multistoreys potentially stopping EVs parking there, plus tax and movement concessions being removed it makes owning an EV a much less attractive proposition.

Renting one seems better to understand if you can cope with range anxiety.

I doubt I'd be dropping any serious £ on an EV anytime soon.
    MicroManaged's avatar
Seems like someone has been reading too much main stream media.

Look up the weight of a BMW X5 or Audi Q7 and then look up the weight of this deal.

I have just ordered this deal. My near neighbour has one and loves it.

    Two week delivery window too.
  23. Shez879's avatar
I have this car on a salary sacrifice lease scheme and this is our first ever brand new car too. Haven't driven it much at the moment as only had it a couple of weeks, but I can say that it drives beautifully and every drive is enjoyable. This was £32k when I ordered mine so this price for anybody who can afford to buy one is very good, when compared to other EVs (and a lot of other ICE cars too) for the same amount. If i could afford to buy one, I would but since I can't, the lease is working out well for now.

It's always surprising how many anti-ev people who have never even owned one these posts attracts. Entertaining reading lol

Great deal and a good car; Chinese have out manoeuvred western countries by focusing on electric cars; once UK has brought into the very good value deals they offer its much harder to oppose what China might do elsewhere; imagine a conversation China might have with the foreign office along the lines of we expect that there will be supply problems for spares for Chinese made cars and in no way is it linked to UK voting against...
    MusicmanJP's avatar
So you are saying the Chinese would develop an market advantage and then try to throw it away with some kind of blackmail attempt? Such a move would be equivalent to the tariffs on China so many hawks are calling for, and would only lead to people buying other products again. These are consumer products, not trains planes and HGVs, it has no leverage over UK foreign policy if anyone buys a Chinese car expecting it to be working in 10 years.
  26. Sandmannn's avatar
I was thinking a couple of weeks ago to part exchange my e208. Go a bit bigger because the price is good, but after the test drive. No thx. For some reason I found the Peugeot drives much better and the quality is just very cheap in the MG.
    dberrypro's avatar
That is worrying as Peugeot aren't exactly famed for quality driving.

All the more reason to wait until ford and VW start to add better competition..
  27. Jelly.Bean's avatar
Another example of a overpriced Chinese car with an extended warranty because if it was only 3 years, the resale value collapses so badly no one would want to sell it so instead has to live with high maintenance costs. Imagine how bad it will be after 7 years, basically worth nothing but maintenance costs.
    reddeviluk's avatar
Are you discounting premium brands like Tesla and BMW in that comment?....
  28. mrtommyp23's avatar
Can I get this in just stop oil orange? Best colour imo

If you go for that option it will mean it breaks down and blocks traffic in the centre of london...

I just got the trophy delivered last week. First new car, first ev. Thing feels like a sports car! Few niggles with the onboard computer but if you can get past them, overall it's really fun to drive.
    MicroManaged's avatar
Tell me you have never driven a sports car without telling me you have never driven a sports car

Seriously though - Glad you like it.
  30. craigdm's avatar
All EVs should come with a heat pump as standard so the range quoted is valid in winter as well as summer.
    MicroManaged's avatar
Range is still different in winter even with a heat pump, same as an ICE vehicle is.
  31. ben_ellis's avatar
I love electric car posts on here! Just sit back and what the carnage take place . This is a good deal though. MG4 is a bit thirsty but only matters if you're charging on a rapid.

Looking at this car on auto trader, there are a lot of second had one year old cars more expensive than this one. Even adding the cost for the tri coat paint this is cheaper than a lot of them. Great deal...I want one but can't afford it right now!

I have this car in metallic grey on lease since the beginning of June...it's really quite good. I thought I'd be sacrificing some ride quality and interior space, coming from a Volvo S90, but it's a really refined ride and the interior feels spacious. Much smaller boot of course! I'm on a number of forums on Social Media for the MG4, and some owners have had problems, but nothing beyond what any manufacturer has with a brand new platform. I've had absolutely no issues at all. Do I have some minor complaints? Yes, I wish the seats had lumbar support, I wish the 'custom' drive kept your settings (it doesn't) and I wish the wheels were 1" larger (I have 17s, the 2023 model has 18s). I do around 800 miles pm, and it costs me less than 20 quid, compared to the S90 at circa £130 pm. All in, for a month and a half's experience, it's a very good car.
    plewis00's avatar
I heard about the settings issue, how have they not fixed that in software yet - it's one of the most common complaints everyone picks up on.
  38. Razor_777's avatar
281 mile range at 64kwh is pretty outstanding.

I have a "296" range with a 90kwh battery and let's be honest - it just about manages 245 miles in early summer (and therefore near optimum temperature).

Just goes to show how much EVs are improving year on year with increased ranges on smaller battery packs.
    UsefulRanger's avatar
Or the manufacturers are lying about the ranges like they did with petrol and diesel cars for years.

These are piling up at local MG dealer near me - literally hundreds of the things stockpiled in a field. They're also doing 0% on them which illustrates they are struggling to shift them - would negotiate hard or hang on - can see these being sub £20k by end of the year.

They've just released a newer, longer range model...... They're clearing the decks of the previous model.
