I wish I had purchased the 11 instead, they advertised the mini as "the same camera, but smaller" and it was $50 cheaper. While it is the same sensor, there are several features that have been removed to achieve a higher level of "simplicity". Some of the things that you cannot do with the mini:
-Add custom presets. You need to stick to the default ones and tweak them as needed, this is a pain since changing the settings in the mini is a little more tedious due to the lack of screen.
-Photo Mode. Completely removed. Yeah you can do "frame grabs" but still... Sometimes you want to just take photos. I am also not sure if frame grabs are ultimately of lower quality than a photo, but I would guess so.
-Exposure lock. In normal gopros you would do this by tapping at the area on the screen that you would like to have properly exposed, since there is no screen you cannot really do this, also the options to exposure lock manually are limited in stock OS. To exposure lock properly you would need to deep dive into GoPro labs.
-No removable battery. I don't really need to explain this one.
-You will need to rely on the QuickApp preview feature and your phone to frame your shots, this is OK but the QuickApp is super slow, it takes 10-15 seconds for your camera to connect and preview. And you will need to do this every time you turn the camera on/off.
In all honesty I don't think it's worth it. The main plus is that you get a smaller and lighter camera with extra mounting clips that don't really make much difference at all in the final shot.

this year I get a subscription bill for 50 odd quid… not so happy now
In almost every way, the regular GoPro is superior to this. If you need a tiny camera, best to get the DJI Action 2. Yes, it has limitations but it has screens and is much, much smaller. Think carefully before buying the GoPro Mini. (edited)
I thought the DJI Action 2 would be a good successor instead but I've had one a while and struggle to get any use out of it. It's a great size and weight with the camera module on its own but the batterylife and storage are so small it makes it almost useless as it runs out quickly and it can't be charged or the storage changed on its own. It's also a pain even just for file transfer as you have to find the additional module since it has the USB-C port on it. I wish they'd gone with a Session type design with its own connector and SD card slot, ditched the screen and gave it a bit more batterylife so it would have been actually usable.
I bought a hero 11 with accessories directly from them (paid £20 extra for express delivery). The package never arrived, and instead of accepting it was lost they insisted there was nothing they could do because they had already sent it. They refused to send me another, which meant the gift was late. And also refused to give me a refund. Had to wait over two weeks with them holding my £500 before they eventually refunded me with zero apology.
Ended up buying a insta360 one rs and very happy with it. The 360 lens is amazing, and I will never put any money into GoPro or their accessories ever again.
Thinking of getting for when I’m skiing (edited)
Am after something like this, small, sleek, clear image for long distance cycling, preferably with a half decent battery but if it has the ability to work and charge at the same time that's ok as can plug in a battery pack. Also in the event of a crash must at least be somewhat reliable and record up to the moment of impact as my last camera recorded in 3 minute clips and the entire 3 minute file leading up to and including the moment of impact wasn't saved leaving me with no footage at all, kind of defeats the purpose. The search continues, any similar recommendations welcome, I will consider
