Garmin Forerunner 45 GPS Running Watch with Garmin Coach Training Plan Support - Black, Large (Renewed)

Seems like a good price, even for a renewed item, though it is an older model now. I haven't personally purchased an Amazon Renewed item before, but you can return it if not happy with the condition.

Edit 23/07: Temporarily out of stock but still available to order, and price has dropped slightly.

Info about the watch:

Easy-to-use running watch monitors heart rate at the wrist and features GPS to track your pace, distance, intervals and more

Works with free Garmin Coach adaptive training plans that bring expert, personalised coaching right to your wrist

Connected features include smart notifications for incoming texts and calls, automatic uploads to Garmin Connect, live tracking and controls for the music playing on your phone

Safety and tracking features include incident detection (during select activities) and assistance, which both send your real-time location to emergency contacts

Activity Tracking and Sports Apps for running, cycling, indoor track, treadmill, elliptical, cardio, yoga and more

Info from Amazon about renewed items:

Amazon Renewed is your trusted destination for refurbished, pre-owned, and open-box products. Products sold on Amazon Renewed have been inspected and tested to be fully functional by an Amazon qualified and performance managed supplier who is either the seller of record, when that is not Amazon EU S.à.r.l., or a third party vendor, when Amazon EU S.à.r.l. sells products that it sources from third party vendors. The suppliers, who may be qualified manufacturers or specialized third-party refurbishers, must meet strict criteria to be able to sell on Amazon Renewed and meet ongoing performance targets. The inspection and testing process typically includes a full diagnostic test, replacement of any defective parts, and a thorough cleaning process carried out by the qualified supplier, or by Amazon.

I suspect this is probably overkill but does anyone know if this would be suitable for 2 young teens wanting a ‘basic’ smart watch for alarms and notifications?

This is not really a smart watch. It is a sports watch with some very basic smart watch functionality.

It would provide alarms and notifications but I am sure that there are better solutions if that is all they need.

Does this represent an upgrade from a Forerunner 235?

The Forerunner 235 is from November 2015 and the Forerunner 45 is from April 2019. So, although it is from the next series up, the FR235 is significantly older. If you compare them, you will find that each of them has small benefits versus the other. Overall I don't think it would be sensible for you to pay £75 for the FR45 if you already have the FR235.

It really depends on what you want from your fitness watch and your budget, but I think you should be setting your sights higher. The FR55 would be a genuine, if small, step up as would be the FR245. New versions of both of them are regularly available for about £110 and £150 respectively. If you are prepared to consider the refurb/renewed market then you can often get them for £20 to £30 less.

My wife got the original Venu for £140 and likes it a lot. It is effectively a Vivoactive 4 but with an Amoled screen.

It's a poor price I'd say. I've bought refurb fr45 for under £60 over 2 years ago (and brand new for £90 the year before). Both going well still though!

From my own experience Amazon trend to overprice older tech (seen in warehouse and renewed) because there often isn't a 'new' price to compare with (or up the new price because there's fewer sellers).
Generally with stuff like this wait for an offer on new or get refurb from reputable seller on eBay? (edited)

I’ve had one of these since the 25th of December 2019 and it still has a solid 5 to 6 day better life and won’t die … I need an excuse to upgrade
