I went to cologne about 15 years ago, the cathedral the dom is beautiful and there was a fantastic outside bar with benches just opposite it run by monks with a sauna upstairs it was fantastic, no idea if its still there, but one of my favourite weekend breaks ever.

Wouldn’t go there now after the New Year’s Eve party the government tried to deny (edited)

Superb train transferm plus Dusseldorf and Frankfurt airports within an hours reach, all with stations. Great for an Interrail base.

Great for exploring the Rhine Gorge towards Koblenz, Boppard, Bacharach etc... or the Moselle towards Cochem & Trier.
So many possibilities, sample the vineyards, all easy by train,
Dusseldorf is worth a visit too. (edited)

It’s better in February and December. If you enjoy alcohol that is.

I have visited friends in Essen and traveled to cologne several years ago. It was OK but I was disappointed by the lack of historical and picturesque buildings in that part of Germany (later I have learnt it is RAF and US airforce's fault). Also, I expected beer to be cheaper and tastier in local pubs. I was charged £5 per a large glass of a mediocre local lager: a large glass was less than 0.5 L , when I asked how does a small glass looks like they showed something of a size of an urine sample collection pot😜.

The Urine Pots are basically Kölns 'thing'. They just mark your coaster for every shot you have and then tally it up at the end.

Apparently the beer is supposed to be drank fresh, hence why they faf about.

But yeh, the city is nice enough and I really enjoyed my time there but it's nothing special.

I’m surprised any flights direct to Germany from Manchester. Impossible to get a direct flight to Hamburg from Manchester which arrives in the morning or early afternoon. (edited)
