Lamps and awkward places and turning multiple things on/off simultaneously/automatically, mostly. I doubt I'd get any use out of them if they weren't linked to Alexa.

It's a daft luxury but being able to say "lights on" and have all the lamps turn on is nice. And plugs are linked to the alarm, so when it's turned on for the house to be empty they turn themselves off automatically where appropriate. And Alexa has a feature where lights turn themselves on and off if you're out to simulate that somebody is still home, so it does that too.

They use more power than you'd think, so if anyone is thinking of using them to turn off standby items you'd probably be worse off unless it's an extension lead with a bunch of them on.

But yeah, if you have a problem they may be a solution. Don't go lookng for a problem. (edited)

Lousy technical support if needed by TP Link. I'd rather buy from a competing brand

I’ve had quite a few of these for a couple of years and they have worked well for the most part. A few have started to become a bit temperamental, their connection to Wi-Fi is always rock solid and the app seems to be pretty good. I think the relay/contactor inside must wear out over time. I’ve found a few quick presses of the button seems to get them going again.

Just make sure you pay attention to the T&C to use this app:

TP-Link will collect information about the devices connected to the plugs (Point 2.3). They may collect IP address, location, mobile device information, user name, email address, shipping address, log-in and password details [!!], communications via phone calls, e-mail, social media… (edited)

This is the cheap Chinese electronics tax. At least they tell you unlike bigger brands. I would have expected it all minus the social media and phone calls bit. You can set permissions appropriately though. (edited)

I saw that and had a think, but realised I practically never use the energy monitoring ones I currently have.

    These are brilliant.

ive got one set up on our fish tank light. Regulates it everyday.

the wireless bulbs are great as well. All set up whilst we away last week to turn on at set and random times

Hah, me too. I'm a little soft so I have 2: one controlling the daylight and one controlling a blue light to help them transition from total darkness to daylight.

I tell ya, when tropical take over the world I shall be spared! [it's a fish not a ninja]

An energy monitoring model (P110) is great to purchase if you have a little extra money. Knowing how much energy is used by the devices plugged into these outlets will be very helpful.

Seems like even cheaper than prime day
