Thinking of going to a Christmas market with one of these deals, any recommendations of places with the best Christmas markets?

It really has to be Brussels. The Grand Place with it's stunning laser decorations projected onto the Guildhall, cafes and bars with heated al fresco dining. There's a small market off the square and another larger one nearby with a beautiful merry go round. There's also the beautiful Royal Galleries for hot chocolate, mulled wine etc. My wife and I loved it.

Eurostar is unreasonably expensive. Just checked for Amsterdam in October and even if you pick the cheapest dates, that’s only for the 6am train. Otherwise it’s at least £100+ each way per person (usually more).

Why on earth is it so much more than flying.

I've checked and the eurostar with reasonable times is £64 at 11:05 and £44 return at 16:40 - total £108.

Flying would probably be about the same, cost more once you factor in the baggage costs. Also with eurostar it's an easier process of going abroad imo (edited)

    Heat!

Depressing how this is cheaper than Sheffield to Brighton. (edited)

Can get sheffield to Brighton return for about £40 each on the train

We just came back from a trip to Brussels in the summer hollz, managed to get this price, so good really easy especially with young family. Queing, security, departure lounge was all so quick and easy! Would defo recommend over flying.

Definitely better then flying with a family so much easier

Any help on a good area to stay for both Paris and Disneyland Paris would be AMAZINGLY helpful. I don't really know where to start looking. Thank you.

We stayed at Torcy on the suburban RER A Line a few years back as we got a good deal on a hotel there, it is convenient for both, however if you are only going to Disneyland one or two days but intend to travel into Paris more often then I would suggest Vincennes as the RER A serves Vincennes for easy direct access to Disneyland in about 35 minutes but also Château de Vincennes is on the Metro 1 line so you can use the T+ single ticket that allows you travel anywhere in Paris via the Metro or bus for a set price and is significantly cheaper than the RER ticket (You load it onto a Navigo pass, similar to a London Oyster card. You can buy a 'Carnet'/bunch of 10 T+ tickets for a discounted price, currently €16.9 for 10 tickets). There are lots of reasonable hotels around Vincennes as well. Failing that Noisy is pretty much in the middle between Paris and Disneyland and has a few Ibis and B&B brand hotels which are reasonably priced.

Included Luggage allowance. Only need to arrive an hr max before departure. Short customs check. No waiting for drinks trolley. More toilets. Better legroom. Wifi. No need to pay for airport parking.

If booked far enough in advance its comparable price to flying. But less stress. Station in city centre so no need for transfer. But yes only really cost effective to get to, if you live near london. Shame they closed ebsfleet, as that was drivable and parking fee wasnt too extortionate.

amsterdam route isnt running next year either.

    Ah I see the catch

You have to travel in the evening to get that price. Ensuring you have to pay for another nights hotel

otherwise it's an eye watering £84 each one way.

    No deal

Date dependent, didn't take me too long to find one with afternoon decent times at £39:

I’ve flown through dozens of airports this year and the Eurostar to Brussels was by far the quickest and most efficient! Can definitely recommend, even if once to see how it is (edited)

Considering from Mancs to London, at times, could set one back to £250-£300 -this is a steal.

I saw the ticket price when my employer paid for it and nearly fell off my chair! That was quite a few years back and cost more than my flights from Belfast to Manchester and London to Belfast combined.

I have just travelled to Paris on Eurostar on a similar deal that I booked back in March. Great experience, and on that route is far superior to flying. £78 is a great deal if you can book far in advance. If booked close to the day of departure the price is £325!

Buy your drinks, meals and snacks before you board, might save a few more ££££
There's loads of shops & food outlets in St Pancras Station, and no restrictions on taking liquids through security.

Arriving by train into the city centre is handy if you're staying in the city. Also good if you're changing trains and travelling on somewhere else.

Never any Fri-Sun deals, better off flying, much cheaper.

It's all subjective and multiple factors involved in determining what's cheapest and/or most convenient. At the moment, I'm not particularly concerned with price as I'd rather pay for premier for the first class experience.

Trains not stopping at Ebbsfleet is a pain given our locality, but not an insurmountable obstacle.

I've always wanted to take a trip on the Eurostar since the tunnel was completed, but I live in Belfast. It would take flying to and spending a night in London beforehand, so every time I look into it when going somewhere it connects to, I decide it's just adding unnecessary expense and a much longer journey for the sake of it and fly direct! I've been to London itself a few times and no real need to see it again, so I would have to have a specific reason to go to London first, like a cup final or something. I imagine that too would also increase the price of everything!

I'm not even a trainspotter, just a geeky civil engineering interest. (edited)

Is Amsterdam and Rotterdam opened up? Heard somewhere that they were going to do some maintenance work and through trains from London would not operate.
    deleted1945554's avatar
They're both open. But service set to be suspended for up to 11 months starting June 2024.

Right PITA that they stopped using Ashford International as I'd have to travel up to St Pancras from Kent only to go past it on the way to Paris or Amsterdam! Cheaper to fly Easyjet from Gatwick to Amsterdam in terms of time and cost overall.
    harrythefish's avatar
The Mrs and I were actually thinking of moving to Kent near Ashford at one point, with dreams of short hops by train to Paris, Amsterdam and beyond. Then I researched the services and found out about them dumping Ashford. Might as well stay in Berkshire then, near enough to Heathrow and Gatwick. All part of the UK's decarbonisation plan, is it?

    Great deal for the cockneys.
  26. AverageBloke's avatar
Not really a deal as you'll need a hotel at the start due to ridiculous timings to get the cheapest price.
  27. mark6220's avatar
Pity its not so cheap to travel by rail in the UK. Flying is cheaper here than long distance train travel
