About this deal

A trial from 8th March to 31st May means pay as you go single fares are now off-peak all day every Friday on Tube, DLR, London Overground, Elizabeth line, and some National Rail services across London and the South East.

These journeys (with the exception of journeys to/from Heathrow airport via Zone 1) will be off-peak on Fridays. The daily cap will also be amended during the trial to cap at an off-peak rate on Friday.

Single paper tickets and paper Day Travelcards will still have peak-hour restrictions during the trial. Season tickets will not change as there is no off-peak option.

Biggest savers will be those with a National Railcard - add your railcard discount to your Oyster card: tfl.gov.uk/fares/free-and-discounted-travel/national-railcard-discount .

Additionally as part of the trial, the 60+ London Oyster photocard and the Older Persons’ Freedom Pass will be valid for use before 9am on Fridays.

Peak fares normally apply on most Tube journeys starting between:
  • AM - 06:30 to 09:30
  • PM - 16:00 to 19:00 (does not apply on journeys that begin in Zone 2-9 and subsequently end in Zone 1)

Exclusions, restrictions and more details

  • The trial only applies to pay as you go single fares and daily caps when using contactless or an Oyster card
  • TfL paper tickets bought during the trial period times will not be valid on National Rail services. Customers are advised to use pay as you go on contactless or Oyster card rather than buy a paper ticket
  • Journeys from Heathrow that start, end, or go through Zone 1 are excluded and will remain peak fare throughout the trial
  • Bus and tram fares are a flat fare no matter the time of travel, so there'll be no change to these fares
  • Peak hours are 06:30-09:30 and 16:00-19:00

Fridays will most benefit the nightlife sector (bars, restaurants, cinemas, etc.), which saw its income from commuters drop following the pandemic as habits shifted towards working from home

    Simply not a deal
    bozo007's avatar
It is for those who have to commute in London on Friday.

Pick times should be scraped altogether. TFL running most expensive tube services in the world already. Not sure what is the deal here. (edited)

It's significantly cheaper than National Rail and buses outside London. And a lot easier to work out what you will be charged.

Ok so am I understanding correctly that a day travelcard from outside London isn't going to see much difference because there's only a discount off the fraction that's London zones?

It's always worth looking at the cost of a ticket with/without travelcard and decide which works out best for you. Some lines have cheap/fixed off-peak fares into london which you could use a network railcard on (as long as it's over £13) and PAYG/Contactless cap for your onward journey. Remember, Buses are a good way of getting around and are cheaper than the tube.

Excluding Elizabeth line after zone 6, to make sure GWR can still keep their juicy business going without any competition (edited)

Elizabeth Line is not actually operated by TfL, nor is London Overground. Both are governed by National Rail fare contracts and were made an exception.

Need to scrap peak fares on railways too...every day.

Why don't they let you, seems a bit mean.
  11. LiveWithinyourMeans's avatar
    Less expensive compared previously.

Does this guarantee a seat... I don't think so, there should be standing fares underground 🤪
    Laurence_Saunders's avatar
Intercity trains don't guarantee a seat these days, so I don't see why you'd expect one guaranteed on mass rapid transit.

I mean, we *could* make it that way, but it would likely cost the best part of a trillion pounds (which would be difficult to justify).

    Nice

I had no idea a Network Raik card gives a discount on Tube until this most! Thank you!!!
    bbuuttlleerr's avatar
Unfortunately, that's the only Railcard that *doesn't* discount Tube journeys.

However, sometimes you can save by buying a Network Railcard-discounted Day Travelcard.

And they predicted they were driving people out of London

    Zones, Elizabeth Line, Overground, Peak..

You need a master’s degree to understand fares in London
    ziggycj's avatar
Not really. All the lines have the same fares. It's just zones. That's like saying you need a degree to understand the different National Rail lines (which also have peak and off peak but also advanced, super off peak...) National Rail is far more complex to understand. TFL fixed price, miss your train? Get the next one, easy refunds, same card can be used on any mode.

You can only add certain railcards to an oyster account, a network (south east) card cannot be added
