On my third pair - when they work, they're brilliant, but previous two pairs developed a horrendous screech in the R ear cup, but only when the ANC was set to maximum. Adjusting the ambient noise setting up one notch got rid of it, but I rely on these to work from home (I'm autistic, with 3 equally autistic and noisy kids).

Sony won't deal with you directly if you buy from Amazon, so I've had to argue the Consumer Rights Act with Amazon's offshore support staff regarding "reasonable expectations" that these should last longer than 18 months, especially considering their price.

I've tried other ANC headphones (Bose, Sennheiser, B&O), but the Sony's seem to filter the noise I have at home far better.

As others have mentioned: brilliant when you get a good set, but be prepared...
    emptypocketz's avatar
That sounds crazy, the Manufacturer (Sony) has a legal responsibility since they are the ones to warranty the product after 30 days from the retailer is up.

Did you not mention to Sony support, they are legally responsibly to repair faulty goods under the Consumer Rights act since it sounds like you went back to Amazon?

And did Amazon refund/replace the goods?

I have a slight hardware fault with my XM5s (faulty ANC button on side) but I can switch it off via the app for now, but will have to deal with Sony support soon enough.

Daughter just bought these off Amazon (arrived yesterday)
is it best to request a partial refund, or return and reorder - do Amazon even let you do either nowadays?
    krpt1867's avatar
I had to return the originals (not this product) and then buy them at the lower price, this was after trying my luck with Amazon live chat. Might be worth a go via that first or it's the long way round unfortunately! (edited)

Can anyone recommend these for using on a treadmill, read a lot of mixed reviews about whether they can handle getting wet from sweat.
    kolossalk's avatar
It's not this set of headphones specifically that is the issue with using for treadmill or exercise. The issue is that 'overear headphones' would probably result in hot and sweaty ears.

Of course every person is different - they maybe fine for you but I personally wouldn't recommend it. (edited)

Even if the Sony's can handle the high quality LDAC codec, my mobile only plays Spotify at its highest resolution using the AAC codec @ 320kbps... so how will these cans sound any better than, say, a pair of budget-ish Anker Q30s? It feels like you're just paying for Sony's proprietary DSEE dsp (which is essentially a sound enhancer, something you could do yourself using a GEQ). Please 🙏 correct me / educate me if there's more to it :/
    emptypocketz's avatar
imo don't worry off the bat, the Sonys XM4/5s sound awesome. You can play around with LDAC codec and other settings afterwards if you require to.

I did extensive testing between codecs (LDAC, AAC, SBC) via A2DP LDAC drivers and various BT adapters and tweaked sound set ups and Tidal hifi>Exclusive Sony XM5 output modes with tweaked sony app and hidden developer settings etc and no difference to my ears between SBC and LDAC. I found switching off LDAC (sticking with SBC or AAC) and Noise cancellation best for myself, no latency lag/Lip-sync or crackles and pops in any of my content (mainly TV and music) so far but am still testing since only had my XM5s for 3 weeks.

So imo enjoy first, test and play afterwards if you need to.

Its been suggested LDAC maybe better sounding on a younger pair of ears ie someone in their teens or 20s unfortunately my old man ears can't find out.

    These or beats studio 3?
    chorizotuna's avatar
Beats are never a good choice, paying a lot for the name.

best sound = sennheiser m4 but lots of other problems
mediocre sound but amazing anc = xm4/5 (edited)
  6. Imatechguy's avatar
My XM3s started snapping at the plastic sliders keeping the sides of the headset attached to the headband because I wear them extended to the max. Anyone know if this has been fixed on the newer model?
    Maaark's avatar
XM4 has a similar design of hinge but felt a lot more robust to me than the XM3 hinge. (And as already stated, that weak point has been totally removed from XM5 at the expense of ability to fold.)
  7. Jakirrr21's avatar
Do these work well with iPhone and iPads? I’ve had my Beats Pro for 11 years and think it’s time to go wireless and get with the times lol. These or AirPods Max?
    PxuL's avatar
They work perfectly fine with Apple, will pair instantly after they power on (after the first Bluetooth setup procedure) definitely these over AirPods Max
  8. cbryanp's avatar
Very good price and great headphones. Only negative is that the mic is awful on these so I would recommend that you don't buy if planning on using for calls/Teams etc.
  9. nosherfj's avatar
Had my xm4's for 13 months and it developed a battery is 10% error. Would work 30 hour but fault with the 10% battery level. Result I claimed on the currys 5 year care and repair and thry had to replace the right cup pcb.

Had thd those for a few months and yet again same error so there currently with currys again.

Moral of the story don't chance buying these without multiple claim insurance like currys do just to save £40 as your likely to be sorry later.
    essjay_22's avatar
    Ok Currys salesman

sorry amazon shows a drop from £232 to £199. a £33 discount doesn't seems a lot. Am I missing something?
    YIMan's avatar
Have you found a better price?
  11. chorizotuna's avatar
Sound is crap for the price but the noise cancelling is worth it.

    Also need some EQ tweaking.
    jimjim79's avatar
I hear you have to use the dsp to get the best out of the them, it's pure tone isn't great.
  12. aaronjden's avatar
    Got the XM4s for Christmas.
Great battery life, sound quality, noise cancellation, build quality and comfort. Plus the multiple device pairing works really well.

Only downside is the microphone... People always struggle to hear me on a call when using the mic. My 3 year old wireless Jabra earbuds wipe the floor with this.
  13. SwordOfEden's avatar
Make sure you are using LDAC for your Bluetooth codec and you may have to force the phone to do this so you get the best sounds.
    phil73's avatar
Can you even do this with a phone? I use Spotify and the highest quality is 320kbps so I can't see how this would improve the quality...? P.s. I'm not very technical so..
  14. jagsman49's avatar
XM5 available for £60 more from Techinthebasket.
    umirza85's avatar
Imo just the fact that they don't fold was a deal breaker to me....xm3/4's are the better option if travelling
  15. alex_876's avatar
Great headphones had em a couple of years now. Only annoying thing is they can develop a squeek on a ear cup - gets worse in cold weather, might just be from the couple of years use though
  16. DEE_Kurtains's avatar
Got mine for £209 last year and they’re brilliant. I also tried XM5’s and the quality difference was nearly imperceptible in sound then the fitment I prefer the XM4, grip better to my head. Hopes this helps someone
  17. abbs321's avatar
I got my XM3s back in Jan 2020 for £235 off Amazon, so to me this seems a quite a meh price after 3 and a half years and a marginally better product?
    sanjayo1's avatar
I have the XM3s originally and they are fantastic. However, XM4's are better sound quality and connectivity to 2 bluetooth devices simultaneously is really handy for me.

I also have the XM5's, however use those for home use as they aren't as transportable (foldable).
I would say XM5's and XM4's are nearly as good as each other in terms of sound quality (I don't notice much difference).

You have to look at all time low's of the XM4's, and this deal enabled me to purchase and replace my XM3's. They are a pretty good deal. Going to be selling the XM3's, although I don't think I'll get that much for them. (edited)

£195 from Sony direct. Free delivery.
    harwinder.kaur's avatar
What's the benefit of buying direct?
  19. Artonox's avatar
tbh if i had the choice again, id get this over the xm5 - not being able to fold, and therefore having to bring a much larger case is massively inconvenient. This is a headphone for travel, and therefore the xm4 is more practical of the two.

Ordered been after a pair for a while! Was just waiting for a sub 200 price thank you
    satyris's avatar
you won't be disappointed. Just make sure the battery lasts as long as it's supposed to. (edited)
  21. bryn.glennie's avatar
I upgraded to these from XM3s last year…. Amazing headphones. I have no intention of changing them till they die.
  22. ZackAttack's avatar
Ordered. Replacing my XM3s which are still amazing, but the extra features on XM4s are worth it especially multi device pairing and the better microphone quality
    keith.burtle's avatar
I'm tempted as have the xm3
  23. reeceking's avatar
    Amazing headphones. Love them
  24. bobs_your_auntie's avatar
I bought a pair of these for my 16th birthday this year. So excited for them to arrive I've been waiting for the price to drop and is going to be great for the gym and everything else I do. From what I've read will not disappoint and should be recommended.
    GemLisa's avatar
How come you didn’t go for the xm5s? I’m just thinking if price wasn’t an object?
  25. Glasshalfsmashed58's avatar
Very tempting, but a lavish purchase for someone like me.
  26. Iancrz's avatar
Thanks OP! Ordered 1 been waiting for this to go below 200. Prefer this xm4 than the bulky xm5
  27. Ozzy_B1's avatar
Great price, I got them for roughly the same price about a year ago. I mainly use them when I travel, The NC is great when on a plane.
The only problem I have is that the battery seems to drain, even when they are switched off, is this normal?
    carlos99's avatar
    Author
I’ve not had the problem. I had them switched off for a month and they still had 100% battery. Yours may possibly have an issue with the battery.
  28. NoMotion's avatar
Thanks OP. Went for the silver ones at £199 for the pay over 5 months option with Amazon.

Got these instead of the wh-1000xm3 which I think these are a newer model (hopefully!!)
    Rohan_Arjoon's avatar
These are the new model correct
  31. omones's avatar
How do these compare to q35 soundcore
    satyris's avatar
I was looking at the QC35iis, well I've been looking at them for about 5 years now, but right when I decided to pull the trigger, the QCs just looked old, with their big physical buttons and greebles. And five years is a long time in DSP and the ANC is going to have come on leaps and bounds. If you need your cans for NC then get the XM4s, heck if you really need better noise isolation, go for the XM5s, Sony saved some performance for the next update. Or look at the WF XM5s
  32. satyris's avatar
Oh come on. I just bought these for £220 sent them back wrong colour, bought them again for £230 battery didn't last a day so they're going back. May as well buy them a third time before sending the second ones back as I'll save money.

Great headphones, can't recommend enough. I know for a fact they left some headroom in the ANC department so they have something to improve for the XM5s
    Wooj's avatar
How do you know about the ANC headroom for XM5s?
  33. JimDiGriz's avatar
Heat and ordered. Been waiting for this.
  34. Eye-Will's avatar
Heat added. I love my XM3's and eventually they will die and I don't think there's will drop much more in price. My kids keep stealing my XM3's to use so I'll treat myself to the new pair and they can have the old ones.
As the reviews say the XM3's are great and the 4's will be at least the same with better microphone and connectivity and who knows the sound may be better as well.
    Fingers crossed.
    PC59's avatar
If you want to treat yourself and want better sound, the wired cousins the Sony MDR-1AM2 are a better choice especially for home use
  35. cjovenstone's avatar
How do these compare to Q45s? My Q45s are in the returns window and I'm tempted to splash on these...
    leanderle's avatar
XM4s have better noise-cancelling and better build quality. Sound quality is roughly equal. I prefer XM4, but QC45s are also very good.
  36. jinkssick's avatar
Does anyone have any recommendations on noise cancelling headphones at the £100 range? Chinese makes?
    Maaark's avatar
Final ux3000 (Japanese) are supposed to have a very balanced tonality. Around £115 I think I've seen. Not used myself though.

Anker space q45 comes with a comprehensive EQ (but again not Chinese), I see it mentioned a lot as a cheaper alternative to XM4s. (edited)
