Advanced noise cancellation
Whether you’re flying long-haul or relaxing in a café, the WH-1000XM4 headphones deliver our advanced noise cancelling performance, keeping out even more high and mid frequency sounds.

The technology behind the noise cancellation
Dual noise sensor technology, featuring two microphones on each earcup, captures ambient noise and passes the data to the HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN1. Using a new algorithm, the HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN1 then applies noise cancelling processing in real time to a range of acoustic environments. Working together with a new Bluetooth Audio SoC (System on Chip), it senses and adjusts to music and noise signals, as well as acoustic characteristics between the driver unit and ears, at over 700 times per second.

Optimising noise cancelling
The WH-1000XM4 headphones incorporate two technologies to maximise noise cancelling performance. Unique Atmospheric Pressure Optimising delivers optimal sound at high altitude while Personal Noise Cancellation Optimiser analyses unique sonic characteristics caused by head size, glasses, and hair, then tailors sound to you.

Ambient Sound Control
Adjust ambient sound with the Sony | Headphones Connect app to cancel noise while still allowing through essential sounds, like transport announcements, when you’re listening on the move.

Wireless freedom, premium sound
LDAC transmits approximately three times more data (at the maximum transfer rate of 990 kbps) than conventional BLUETOOTH® audio, allowing you to enjoy High-Resolution Audio content in exceptional quality, as close as possible to that of a dedicated wired connection.

Sound you can believe in
A built-in analogue amplifier integrated in the HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN1 realises an unmatched signal-to-noise ratio for low distortion and exceptional sound quality for portable devices. Powerful 40mm drivers, with Liquid Crystal Polymer (LCP) diaphragms, make the headphones perfect for handling heavy beats and can reproduce a full range of frequencies up to 40kHz.

The WH-1000XM4 headphones are currently available at a fantastic price. This situation raises the question of whether the WH-1000XM6 is being prepared for an imminent launch. It would be quite pleasing if the WH-1000XM5 could also be discounted to match this favorable price point. 🎧

Personal preference is a remarkable facet of life. I gravitate towards the superior specifications of XM5s.

Here's a comparison of key specs between the Sony WH-1000XM4 and WH-1000XM5 wireless noise cancelling headphones:
    Headphones:
    WH-1000XM4 (released 2020)
    WH-1000XM5 (released 2022)
    Noise Cancelling Technology:
XM4: QN1 processor, dual noise sensor technology
XM5: V1 processor, dual noise sensor technology (upgraded)
    Drivers:
    XM4: 40mm dome type
XM5: 30mm dome type (newly developed)
    Bluetooth:
    XM4: Bluetooth 5.0
    XM5: Bluetooth 5.2 (improved connectivity)
    Battery Life:
XM4: 30 hrs with ANC on (38 hrs with ANC off)
XM5: 30 hrs with ANC on (40 hrs with ANC off)
    Charging:
    XM4: USB-C quick charge (5 min = 5 hrs play)
    XM5: USB-C quick charge (3 min = 3 hrs play)
    Weight:
    XM4: 254g
    XM5: 250g
So in summary, the XM5 has an upgraded processor, Bluetooth version, and faster quick charging compared to the XM4. It also has newly developed 30mm driver units. The noise cancelling, battery life and weight are quite similar between the two models. The XM5 builds incrementally on the XM4 with small improvements to audio, and connectivity. (edited)

Does the ANC work as well as it did on day 1 on these earphones? Apple nerfed the air pods pro 1 that I own and I'm looking at these as an alternative. Thanks for any help.

I have three year old XM3s and the ANC work as well as the first day.

My wife gifted me a pair of Sennheiser Momentum 4s recently and I am regretting those. My Sony XM3s still outperform them in terms of ANC and connection stability.

A word of warning for folks who plan to use these for voice calls. The mic is absolutely awful. As bad as a cheap chinese thing for 10 pounds.

I use this everyday. Definitely works I don't hear my missus talk anymore. I take it off when she sleeps and get goodnight sleep.

Tried using these for calls on Zoom, Skype and Teams and the microphone is absolutely awful. Tried with pc, Mac and iPhone.

Swapped out to the MX5 and they are soo much better

Does anyone know if any stores have demo headsets you can try on? i.e. Currys, John Lewis etc?
    sfleming23's avatar

I actually sold my XM5s as I prefer the design of these and the XM5s made my ears sweat! Initially I went from XM5 to QC45 for comfort but those have none of the functionality of the Sony XM series. I then sent the QC45 back and got my XM4s. I highly recommend them for this price!

For music on the commute these still blow the rest of the competition away, especially for the price. If paired with Android the LDAC codec gives the best bluetooth sound. I agree the mic could be better but I'm not using them for business.

And this design is better than XM5, and more fold-able too.

Students buying 200 quid headphones. How did it get to this?
    MrsPickleJuice's avatar
I had £350 headphones as a student as I paid full price for my XM3s

    Worth an upgrade from 1000XM3?
    alebaster's avatar
    Def not!

Worth the upgrade from some Soundcore q45 I paid £90 for? Mainly use my airpod pro 2nd gen out and about. Only really use the q45 long haul
