    Can anyone recommend these please?

That will open up a world of comments.

I went for Dalstrong personally, never regretted. I wanted a full set so paid for the 18 piece which was about £400. Equally I also bought one of the special Japanese looking knives which was £160 but then I have everything I need now.

Another brand that is popular is Wusthof, apparently great knives, but more than I was budgeting to buy a set.

So much choice and a lot of personal preference, but I realised a really good knife lasting years or a lifetime = good money. So its about finding a balance for your budget and willingness on how much to spend.

I justified mine personally after buying a 3 knife set for £100 and them going blunt within months. Having done this a number of times I actually spent more on these 'throw away' than I did on my set that is still like new yet a few years old!

I would avoid anything with any coating. Whatever chemical it is, one will eventually end up eating it.

Black knives matter. Totally agree, any coated ones I've seen other people have look awful after a bit.

Pay cheap get cheap - fact of life. No professional chef will be using these its just an advertising con.
Probably suitable for students, those on tight budget etc. but definitely not professionals.

Do NOT buy coated knives, end of. I've never had anything stick to my knife, what is the actual point?

I find with knives is that it’s best to by a cast that’s pure steel. The handle is then part of the knife. There’s less chance (or no chance) of them snapping in your hand. I bought a set of Japanese knives and I think they will last me a good while. Four years in and I give them a sharpen every few months

We had cast that the wife tried throwing away as they are blunt after 10 years use, she bought some rubber handled ones that have lasted less than a year. All the rubber has come away, I'm bringing the cast steel ones out for a sharpen. (edited)
