Would this be good for my 8 year old to play indie games from stream?
    mr_johnsie's avatar
More of an office/browsing  type of machine. No extra graphics capabilities and limited hard disk space. It would play older games fine, but nothing resource intensive.

Can you add a gpu to this?

EDIT: yes you can, original options seems to be a p1000 so should take a decent low profile one. (edited)
    greenalien1's avatar
Most also be a single slot card as the PCI-E slot is right next to the PSU.

Can I transfer my existing ssd out of my desktop and into this one without having to do a fresh install of windows etc? I ask as my ssd is twice the size in capacity as the one that ships with this.
    chrisjlocke's avatar
This would sort of work, but Windows will moan about change of hardware and the activation will go pop .. assuming your current version is activated and isn't the 'Watermark edition'...

I've bought one. The i5-9500 is an officially supported Windows 11 CPU, however I've read that being able to installing and run Windows 11 could also depend on if the motherboard supports some kind of security setting required for Windows 11 installation. Does anyone know if that would be the case? I want the 'future proofing' ability of being able to install and run Windows 11. (edited)

they do a driver pack for the 3431 so yeah,
    dell.com/sup…ack

The CPU range of models under 3431:
    dell.com/sup…-us

So the base unit; Case/PSU/Board will all be the same, then each one will have a varient of factors of CPU, storage, sometimes ram. (edited)

A better homelab starter than that ancient 4 core Xeon everyone jumped on the other day.

Not really - the ‘ancient 5810’ could take full size GPUs or other add-in cards and a simple £20 CPU upgrade would move it to 14C/28T.

Some old kit is just out-dated over-priced junk. 199 quid- they are really having a good laff.

I'm thinking of buying this, but could you find anything better? Don't mind paying a bit more if it's brand new condition.
  7. Proveright's avatar
Thanks OP. You can't really go wrong with Dell as they don't use cheap parts.
For me is bigger is better. Whether on your desk or on the floor, there is still plenty of room to go up to the ceiling! I don't get why manufacturers plug small form factor so much. There is no room for upgrades unless you buy limited smaller parts. .
The workstation on the previous Dell deal was designed for offices so even more reliable and is a better deal IMO.
The achilles heel is " Windows" which when updating is more likely to brick your machine than any virus will. Always backup to another drive or to another computer like OPs.

SFF lets them ship more systems in smaller volume but the components aren’t super small (or specialist like laptops) and they can use proprietary parts like PSUs without an issue which means more first-party repairs and servicing . Also businesses like them over mini towers.

These are great devices. I ordered one when the last deal was here but I returned it and purchased their i7 9700 Optiplex in their micro form factor. Fits in the size of your hand and whisper quiet.. Loving it!
  9. MrKrabs's avatar
    Not bad.

Stick in a low profile single slot 1650 and you can a PC capable of light gaming.

Or just pick up a sub £100 One X
    dmannn's avatar
was thinking the exact same thing. Have actually even seen people put in single fan GPU (full size) by modding it inside a bit. Bit faffy, but worked well.

Solid deal. It's not pennies, but I've used Dell SFF for years. Quiet, sensible internal upgrade options and it'll have driver and OS updates for years....

For general home use. It's a winner.
  11. dabear11's avatar
I ordered one, let's see when it arrives. I need it for general home office use. Currently using an aging HP G1 with i5 4590 which I got from itzoo 4 years ago, but upgraded it to 16gb RAM and Sata SSD. This Dell would be a modest upgrade, but it much more modern and will last me years.

    Overpriced imo (edited)

    Recommended anything better?
  13. sane4sure's avatar
Can you use this as a Roon core?
  14. Libertas's avatar
Technical Question: (Yes, dell will have procedures in place to handle this).

When you purchase a second hand PC from a private seller, obviously you should do a full wipe and reinstall of the SS/HD.

What about potential malware in bios & firmware spaces. How does one mitigate against that?
    SomeRandomISHere's avatar
You can download the latest from the manufacturer website and install it yourself but truthfully if someone has gone to all that effort you probably wouldn't know.
  15. xenny's avatar
Code says 10% off workstations, so Precision line, not Optiplex.
  16. inayat's avatar
    Dell OptiPlex any discount code?
  17. baalberith's avatar
    look good i think

Is this upgradeable to Windows 11? What’s the typical size of a W11 install anyway?
    razo's avatar
Yes it's upgradeable. Windows 11 uses the same space as 10 (it is the same OS underneath the fresh lipstick).
  19. crazygoog's avatar
For all the haters of this deal, would this one be any better please? ebay.co.uk/itm…OPY
    wendy07's avatar
Yes. For much the same price could get a 10 rather 95 . Sometimes can be bought a little cheaper if you're patient.

I'm after a cheap (budget of around £200) PC. I will use it for surfing the net, MS Excel, watching YouTube videos and listening to music (so I'd like the PC to have a connection for the external PC speakers I already own). I won't be playing games on it. I'd like it to have an officially supported Windows 11 compatible CPU. I'd like 16GB of (DDR4?) RAM. This Dell PC seems to fit my criteria (ideally I'd have liked it to have an optical drive) but people say you can get better on ebay (which come with a 1 year warranty over the Dell 180 day warranty). Anyone have time to point me to specific examples? I am not up to date on CPUs so it takes me time to work out when a PC has a really old CPU.
    razo's avatar
This is a fine option if you're not planning on playing games. It's not the cheapest, but you'd have to chance winning an auction on ebay, or a local deal, and cope without a worthwhile warranty to get a lot cheaper (even if eBay PCs say they come with warranty, I'd rather trust Dell selling direct). It's officially Windows 11 compatible.

This appears to be the specs of the Dell Precision 3431 SFF: -
    i.dell.com/sit…pdf

Am I correct in thinking there is no built in WiFi? If I wanted to add a higher capacity SSD is there room for more than one SSD or would I have to swap out the supplied SSD? Looks like HDMI only monitors can connect to this PC.

    Hi,
Not sure...but if you go here...
    dell.com/sup…-us
it actually states that there are 2 x DisplayPorts
That link also points to other specs.
    hope that helps...

This deal descriptions says "Includes New Keyboard & Mouse" but does it? I can't see any mention of that on the Dell website.
    johnf's avatar
A friend of mind who bought this just told me that it does include a keyboard and mouse.
    Hope that helps.

Mine has arrived. Slight issue. I didn't realise "Display Port" was a type of connection. I thought it was being used as a generic term. I thought everything was HDMI these days. My current monitor has HDMI so I'll have to source an HDMI to Display Port cable or converter.

Any advice for ChromeOS users? Is this this worth buying and running chrome OS compared to a chromebox base unit?

I've had a few cheap chromebooks and it's seems wasteful to replace the screen and keyboard everytime as I used it in a desktop setting with monitors etc (edited)
