I'd love one, but I've not heard good things about Tesla build quality and reliability of the batteries. Warranty is one thing, but long waits for parts isn't appealing. That's if its true, mind.
    lukebrown28's avatar
There's some right utter bobbins in the comments of every deal on an EV. It wouldn't take much for the Tories to turn electric cars into the next culture war at this rate.

The best part is most people commenting haven't got a Tesla so it's just regurgitating nonsense that hasn't been fact-checked.

For anyone interested, I have owned a Model 3 LR from new for coming up on 3 years now, and here's my key points:

    * Battery life is great, but nowhere near the 340 suggested if you put your foot down, or cover a lot of 70+mph miles. Cold weather its even worse
    * I've lost 1 mile of range in 3 years in terms of total capacity
    * Never once have I run out of juice and been stranded
    * Yes I do occasionally get range anxiety
    * Tesla Superchargers are fantastic and ubiquitous. I've never had to (or wanted to) use a public charger
    * Built quality is disgraceful for the price. There's creaks and squeaks. Could probably get them sorted under warranty but I personally can't be bothered with the faff
    * I've had serious issues with the electronics. You may not. The service experience is absolutely diabolical. I've owned a BMW, Mercedes, and a Fiat. All were far superior in terms of the customer service
    * Paint quality sucks and scratches very easily

So, as you can see from my own individual experience (others will differ) it's a mixed bag. I don't drive many miles, and I have a charger at home, so here's my key thoughts:

    * If you drive up and down the M1 all day, I don't think an EV is for you (yet) because even though finding chargers isn't hard, it does still take 15-30 minutes compared to 5 to fill up. If your company is happy with that, it's not an issue
    * They lie with range just like ICE cars, but the idea that they can't travel much distance is rubbish
    * If you do need to use the app to raise service issues, it's horrific. You don't feel like a customer who splashed out the best part of 50k on a car at all
    * You don't feel like you're sitting in a car worth 50k at any point. The interior is sparse and low quality, and that's excluding the squeaks and creaks
    * I've driven a VW ID3 and the Tesla is leagues ahead. Can't speak for things like the i4 or Taycan to compare unfortunately

After all that would I have another? Yes absolutely for these reasons only:
    * Best EV you can buy at the moment in my opinion. Best range, best efficiency, best charging infrastructure
    * I'm self employed and it's the best way to run a car at current. Anyone who is able I would suggest you take advantage now because the government will absolutely not leave it like this. I pay no road tax, 2% BIK, claim 19-25% on the payments, and if I were not on FRS would claim back 50% of the VAT. It's a no-brainer

Now if it were my personal money, would I buy one? Absolutely not in a million years. For 50k you can have a *lot* more car for your money with far better customer service.

That's one person's experience don't forget. Everyone has different priorities in a car, and will have different issues (or none at all hopefully).

Just wanted to give an honest appraisal rather than the crazy stories from the Internet.

Quick tip, get an insurance quote first. Thieving insurance companies are using electric as another excuse to bump up premiums.
I had almost decided to go the fully electric route , i did lots of research and decided i could manage with a range of around 200 miles minimum, I had a test drive of a Jaguar ipace, researched charging point ( quite confusing there are 100s of apps) and was about to buy till i got an insurance quote which was going to cost an EXTRA £1000 a year effectively wiping out any fuel savings.
I have gone along the comfortable hybrid route again with 60 MPG from a 2.5 litre automatic and no range anxiety.
My previous car was hybrid and had done 110,000 miles and the battery passed the annual health check with no problems.
    wavecrest1's avatar
+1 on the insurance tip - especially if you have a young driver (23-not so young) and live in Northern Ireland. Our quote on a Model Y was £8000 - (We pay £900 for a 2018 Alhambra)
  3. kerby's avatar
Jesus Christ.. the amount of mis-information in this thread is ridiculous..
Cost of charging at home - You should be on Octopus intelligent.. it costs 7.5p between 23:30 - 5:30 am. Then 31p rest of the time.

The supercharger network will only be busy at peak travel times. Personally never been in a "queue" to charge and ive had a Tesla for 5 years now.

Lithium batteries only tend to catch fire if they have been struck violently (i.e hit an object in the road) There are far more petrol fires then lithium.

Personally i wouldn't be looking at an electric if I couldn't charge at home, charging purely on public chargers is getting more and more expensive, they are a convivence for when required. Too many people use the excuse "but what about when i do 400 miles a day" Erm.. how often are you doing that? if you are doing that weekly or more often then you really should be stopping and taking a break. A model 3/Y will charge fully in like 30-40min. Time for you to go to the loo, grab some food and then fill your car full of fuel. next time you stop at services time yourself.. you could of charged in that time frame.

The argument of damage to the environment over mining is a fraction to what we do with mining for oil, then refining and then burning again. A car can be charged purely at home via solar panels with smart chargers.
Yes to start with the rush for Lithium breads competition for the cheapest minerals. however tesla them selves now have policies in place they have certification of where the lithium came from and track it the whole way to combat people taking advantage of child labour and environmental damage.
Even then, when a battery becomes unsuitable for a car, it gets recycled to either go into other devices or gets repackaged as a house battery, numerous companies are utilizing old car cells for whole house batteries or as grid stabilisation tools.

The argument about car parks collapsing is absolute nonsense. We should be banning any car larger than a fiesta as all modern cars weigh a freaking ton. Model Y's weigh less than a Range Rover, car parks arnt collapsing under their weight.

The amount of people that are using the "you lefties and their brain washing in the media".. Mate you are victim of the same thing, who is going to lose big if everyone went to electric cards.. The fossil fuel companies, the amount of money they earn yearly is obscene, of course they want to keep you in a fuel car. Its not a conspiracy its business.
    harrythefish's avatar
Ironic moniker there. It's the people - some 70% of the UK population I've heard - who have no chance of home charging that will be parking on the erm.. kerby.

  5. dazza1011's avatar
not voted either way but ive just had one for week as a courtesy as my KIA EV6 is in for an accident repair and can confirm this is one of the worst cars i have ever drove like driving a kitchen worktop with an ipad slapped in the middle nothing about it is intuitive also suspension is terrible felt every bump in the road
i suggest you test drive other manufacturers and dont fall for the hype
    deleted9453's avatar
Funny, Test drove an IONIQ5 (same as EV6) and it drove like a wallowy barge with scratchy plastic interior. Suspension by far the worst of any car I've driven in recent years(made me feel seasick and plenty of threads on forums for similar complaints). Along with all the cars driven over recent years, the IONIQ5 was the one with the most unintuitive infotainment/os system and I've driven the latest iterations of Merc, BMW, Audi and VW which are all child's play compared to Hyundai/kia.

Could always be worse though, it could have an MG infotainment system.

Hyundai and Kia also make Tesla look like a fantastic bargain too price wise.
  6. hammerick's avatar
At the end of the last quarter, Tesla were offering 9%-10% discounts on inventory stock with their "showroom discount" as it's called - this model was around £40,500 brand new (from stock) - admittedly, that's £1,400 more than this vehicle BUT it was brand new.

We can't go back in time, but IF you can wait and you really must have a Tesla - I would personally recommend holding-off for the next quarter end, then 2-3 weeks before, check the inventory and you can bag a brand-new 'in-stock' Tesla for bit more (relatively) than this used model.

I suspect as we get closer to December that Tesla might even get more aggressive on the "showroom" discounts as they try to shift the stock that Elon is forcing through the production lines. If they don't, they're going to end up with big fields of Tesla's sitting around in inventory.

If you can't wait and you are happy with this model, then this is a good deal at the moment for this model Tesla (in my opinion) - putting aside the Tesla vs BMW vs Hybrid vs Anything else "discussions".

    Thanks for posting op
    deleted9453's avatar
I don't think they have stock sitting around do they? They're pretty much JiT producing the cars.

My mate has ordered one and has to wait til mid September for earliest Model Y Performance to get here.
  7. a2tmfk's avatar
Still 10k too much! Prices will drop soon.
    gypsy's avatar
To some degree, yes, economies of scale and competition wilk drive the price down a little. But this countered by continuing inflation.

I paid £17k for a new car five years ago. That same car today goes for £31k new. My exact mode can be bought for £14k used. Inflation dominates other factors. Waiting would not have helped.
  8. vixmony's avatar
I would love one of these as I'm so much into tech and gadgets. But just can't justify the price, compared to my 2017 nissan x trail at under 15k!
    deleted9453's avatar
Under £15k.....lol. my mates just traded in his pos 2017 XTrail for £17k.

Irrespective of your "bargain", I fail to see the relevance to this deal.

I too can get a 6 year old unreliable car for half the price of this.
  9. Osamahsameer's avatar
The final price is coming out at 35,725? Is this right?
    djdope's avatar
    nope, its 39k
35k is the price with estimated savings against a petrol car
  10. the_fury_2000's avatar
Love how people think £40k is a lot for a car in 2023. A Kia sportage can be specced to over £40k. A sorrento is well over £50k.
    Hyundai i5 and i6 £45k and £50k+.
BMW 1 series can be £40k+.
    Little_Casper's avatar
Everything is expensive now, over the years finance has been raising the cost of vehicles across the board. There are no good value cars anymore, if you need a good deal buy used with a decent warranty imo.

  12. Rup's avatar
Good price, but BEV's really only worth it thru company car tax savings.
Also interior is awful, all controlled by screen, and material quality is poor.

If this deal price was for Premium trim then would have been a better deal as would have a lot of the extras
    deleted9453's avatar
There is no premium trim, just motor and performance options.

Trim levels are the same apart from a premium sound system in Long Range and Performance

After just driving to Italy and back in mine I would say unless you need the supercharger network, then avoid like the plague . It was genuinely dangerous to drive and its constant attempts to kill me made it the most stressful trip I've done (edited)
    guicane's avatar
best selling car in the world but yea dont buy it, it tried to constantly kill szigmon123.

Just came back from portugal, 2500 miles later, zero kill attempts from mine. Maybe your car hates you or maybe you think the car can do what it can't and put yourself in a dangerous situation.

For those who haven't experienced it, I can share that we absolutely adore this vehicle. Didn't know much about Tesla and definitely wasn't a fanboy. We purchased ours just before the national fuel shortages (where the pumps ran dry) and got Solar PV on our roof as well.

The experience has been nothing short of incredible. Highly recommended.

I see them everywhere in major cities being used as taxis. They're like the new posh Toyota Prius. Certainly not a status symbol car anymore (so prob don't bother if that's your motivation).

Check out an insurance quote before buying one as quotes are ridiculous on teslas
    sab's avatar
    Can't believe it..
Run a quote on a Renault Zoe and quotes are £700ish..I pay £250 on my dirty non ulez compliant diesel
  18. szigmon123's avatar
Anyone ordering this would also be wise to check their insurance quotes prior to order. Do not assume it will be cheap because all other cars are. Some do manage to get cheap quotes, but electric cars in general seem to be more and Teslas even more so. A number of people on the forums struggling to get sensible quotes at all. My MYLR is through salary sacrifice, but I did a quote out of interest. I could not get anything for less then 1k with a very high excess. By comparison I've insured plenty of expensive and modified cars and never paid more than £500 with £150ish compulsory excess
    stato257's avatar
+1. I've just renewed insurance for my 2021 Ioniq 5. Initial renewal price was £450 more than last year despite 20yrs clean licence with no claims. Looking on comparison sites quotes saved me £100ish. I was able to haggle my insurer (Admiral) down and settled on £800. I was told inflation and the higher repair costs for EV has impacted prices this year. Will be changing to another EV next year so hoping the markets settle.
  19. samsmith66's avatar
283 miles range. What is the genuine range in cold weather with heating on?
    deleted9453's avatar
    200-230
  20. taylral12's avatar
Picked one up last week, it's great and finding it very cheap to run with intelligent octopus (7.5p per KW) pretty much works out 90% cheaper per mile than my petrol car. So spacious inside my other car feels tiny and it's also a mid size SUV. No brainer as a company car but would be a bit nervous buying one although the warranties are long for battery/drivetrain.
  21. Sir.Charles's avatar
You can't beat an EV as a daily driver. I've had many high performance cars over the years and love my V8s....but since owning a new Leaf for 3 years and more recently a Model 3 Performance to replace it - I'm converted. Every ICE car drives like garbage once you have driven a well sorted EV. I was definitely in the early hater bracket, having been in the motor trade for 20+ years I was scared of change as it would affect my earnings!! (Used Car business)

Most of the people slagging off Tesla have never even sat in one and are more than likely driving around in 11 plate A4s and Golfs. Don't listen to these people that get their opinions from Facebook - if you are on the fence and can afford one, go for it! You will never look back.

I still keep a V8 on the drive though....but I'm afraid it feels slow to me now . Sad times.
  22. herrbz's avatar
Aren't they 'only' ~£3000 more brand new?
    DealBandit1's avatar
Yeah just around that price, I would avoid demo vehicles and go for new or wait until the end of quarter deal. They take so much abuse. I'm sure I'm not the only one who gunned it down the road at every light when I took these for a test drive.
  23. swarnford's avatar
I don’t know why you would get one new having a look at the depreciation and second hand prices
  24. 1god1life1test's avatar
I have a model 3 never looked back awesome machines never had any issues or problems…. Awesome drive and the sound system is really something else! I would like to most probably get a model Y in near future just for the extra room inside the car and I prefer being higher up in the car also good for family. Holding out for now because it won’t be long before they release the new model 3 and model Y
    deleted9453's avatar
Model Y will be a good few years away yet.

Had my Model Y LR for 16 months and done nearly 15,000 miles in it. One of the best cars I've ever had and that includes the M2 that it replaced. The performance is phenominal and it's not even the performance version. Usually charge it at home but once a month do a 285+ mile round trip and never had a problem getting on a supercharger. Drove back last night from Cornwall to SE via A303, M3 etc and stopped just once at Amesbury for a 10 minute top up charge. Far cheaper to run than a petrol car. I've heard the comment about hard ride etc but it's softer than the M2 I had and I find it fine. I wonder though if people check the tyre pressures? When I collected it from Tesla the tyres were all at 50 psi (cold) - should be 42psi.
