sorted byThe best part is most people commenting haven't got a Tesla so it's just regurgitating nonsense that hasn't been fact-checked.
For anyone interested, I have owned a Model 3 LR from new for coming up on 3 years now, and here's my key points:
* Battery life is great, but nowhere near the 340 suggested if you put your foot down, or cover a lot of 70+mph miles. Cold weather its even worse
* I've lost 1 mile of range in 3 years in terms of total capacity
* Never once have I run out of juice and been stranded
* Yes I do occasionally get range anxiety
* Tesla Superchargers are fantastic and ubiquitous. I've never had to (or wanted to) use a public charger
* Built quality is disgraceful for the price. There's creaks and squeaks. Could probably get them sorted under warranty but I personally can't be bothered with the faff
* I've had serious issues with the electronics. You may not. The service experience is absolutely diabolical. I've owned a BMW, Mercedes, and a Fiat. All were far superior in terms of the customer service
* Paint quality sucks and scratches very easily
So, as you can see from my own individual experience (others will differ) it's a mixed bag. I don't drive many miles, and I have a charger at home, so here's my key thoughts:
* If you drive up and down the M1 all day, I don't think an EV is for you (yet) because even though finding chargers isn't hard, it does still take 15-30 minutes compared to 5 to fill up. If your company is happy with that, it's not an issue
* They lie with range just like ICE cars, but the idea that they can't travel much distance is rubbish
* If you do need to use the app to raise service issues, it's horrific. You don't feel like a customer who splashed out the best part of 50k on a car at all
* You don't feel like you're sitting in a car worth 50k at any point. The interior is sparse and low quality, and that's excluding the squeaks and creaks
* I've driven a VW ID3 and the Tesla is leagues ahead. Can't speak for things like the i4 or Taycan to compare unfortunately
After all that would I have another? Yes absolutely for these reasons only:
* Best EV you can buy at the moment in my opinion. Best range, best efficiency, best charging infrastructure
* I'm self employed and it's the best way to run a car at current. Anyone who is able I would suggest you take advantage now because the government will absolutely not leave it like this. I pay no road tax, 2% BIK, claim 19-25% on the payments, and if I were not on FRS would claim back 50% of the VAT. It's a no-brainer
Now if it were my personal money, would I buy one? Absolutely not in a million years. For 50k you can have a *lot* more car for your money with far better customer service.
That's one person's experience don't forget. Everyone has different priorities in a car, and will have different issues (or none at all hopefully).
Just wanted to give an honest appraisal rather than the crazy stories from the Internet.
I had almost decided to go the fully electric route , i did lots of research and decided i could manage with a range of around 200 miles minimum, I had a test drive of a Jaguar ipace, researched charging point ( quite confusing there are 100s of apps) and was about to buy till i got an insurance quote which was going to cost an EXTRA £1000 a year effectively wiping out any fuel savings.
I have gone along the comfortable hybrid route again with 60 MPG from a 2.5 litre automatic and no range anxiety.
My previous car was hybrid and had done 110,000 miles and the battery passed the annual health check with no problems.
Cost of charging at home - You should be on Octopus intelligent.. it costs 7.5p between 23:30 - 5:30 am. Then 31p rest of the time.
The supercharger network will only be busy at peak travel times. Personally never been in a "queue" to charge and ive had a Tesla for 5 years now.
Lithium batteries only tend to catch fire if they have been struck violently (i.e hit an object in the road) There are far more petrol fires then lithium.
Personally i wouldn't be looking at an electric if I couldn't charge at home, charging purely on public chargers is getting more and more expensive, they are a convivence for when required. Too many people use the excuse "but what about when i do 400 miles a day" Erm.. how often are you doing that? if you are doing that weekly or more often then you really should be stopping and taking a break. A model 3/Y will charge fully in like 30-40min. Time for you to go to the loo, grab some food and then fill your car full of fuel. next time you stop at services time yourself.. you could of charged in that time frame.
The argument of damage to the environment over mining is a fraction to what we do with mining for oil, then refining and then burning again. A car can be charged purely at home via solar panels with smart chargers.
Yes to start with the rush for Lithium breads competition for the cheapest minerals. however tesla them selves now have policies in place they have certification of where the lithium came from and track it the whole way to combat people taking advantage of child labour and environmental damage.
Even then, when a battery becomes unsuitable for a car, it gets recycled to either go into other devices or gets repackaged as a house battery, numerous companies are utilizing old car cells for whole house batteries or as grid stabilisation tools.
The argument about car parks collapsing is absolute nonsense. We should be banning any car larger than a fiesta as all modern cars weigh a freaking ton. Model Y's weigh less than a Range Rover, car parks arnt collapsing under their weight.
The amount of people that are using the "you lefties and their brain washing in the media".. Mate you are victim of the same thing, who is going to lose big if everyone went to electric cards.. The fossil fuel companies, the amount of money they earn yearly is obscene, of course they want to keep you in a fuel car. Its not a conspiracy its business.
i suggest you test drive other manufacturers and dont fall for the hype
Could always be worse though, it could have an MG infotainment system.
Hyundai and Kia also make Tesla look like a fantastic bargain too price wise.
We can't go back in time, but IF you can wait and you really must have a Tesla - I would personally recommend holding-off for the next quarter end, then 2-3 weeks before, check the inventory and you can bag a brand-new 'in-stock' Tesla for bit more (relatively) than this used model.
I suspect as we get closer to December that Tesla might even get more aggressive on the "showroom" discounts as they try to shift the stock that Elon is forcing through the production lines. If they don't, they're going to end up with big fields of Tesla's sitting around in inventory.
If you can't wait and you are happy with this model, then this is a good deal at the moment for this model Tesla (in my opinion) - putting aside the Tesla vs BMW vs Hybrid vs Anything else "discussions".
Thanks for posting op
My mate has ordered one and has to wait til mid September for earliest Model Y Performance to get here.
I paid £17k for a new car five years ago. That same car today goes for £31k new. My exact mode can be bought for £14k used. Inflation dominates other factors. Waiting would not have helped.
Irrespective of your "bargain", I fail to see the relevance to this deal.
I too can get a 6 year old unreliable car for half the price of this.
35k is the price with estimated savings against a petrol car
Hyundai i5 and i6 £45k and £50k+.
BMW 1 series can be £40k+.
Also interior is awful, all controlled by screen, and material quality is poor.
Trim levels are the same apart from a premium sound system in Long Range and Performance
Just came back from portugal, 2500 miles later, zero kill attempts from mine. Maybe your car hates you or maybe you think the car can do what it can't and put yourself in a dangerous situation.
The experience has been nothing short of incredible. Highly recommended.
Run a quote on a Renault Zoe and quotes are £700ish..I pay £250 on my dirty non ulez compliant diesel
Most of the people slagging off Tesla have never even sat in one and are more than likely driving around in 11 plate A4s and Golfs. Don't listen to these people that get their opinions from Facebook - if you are on the fence and can afford one, go for it! You will never look back.
I still keep a V8 on the drive though....but I'm afraid it feels slow to me now . Sad times.
You know pumps need electricity?
I don't pay monthly for mine though......I own it.
